A retro-style can be regarded as lack of original contemporary ideas. But also as passion for nostalgic time-traveling. Everyone wants to return to their youth at least for a moment. Inicia was one of my first designs (hence the name) from the mid-eighties. The original drawing was never finished because there were too many similar typefaces around. After three decades the shapes of the old designs suddenly became tempting to finish. Now restored and completed at Storm Type Foundry.

Do you remember that kid from Lord of the Flies? Why do I even remember that kid, I’m too young for that. However, his name was Piggy, and I wanted to make a typeface that resembled him. So this is my tribute to Piggy who got killed by that falling plastic rock in the movie. May he live forever through this typeface, on birthday cards, or maybe some sweet candy packaging or why not through an graphic identity for a toy company?

An image spotted online showed a rendering of a ladies’ fashions storefront that had appeared in the Libbey-Owens-Ford Glass Company’s 1939 brochure. The signage consisted of the hand lettered word ‘Apparel’, and was done in a variant of the Art Deco stencil style of lettering that’s most recognizable in Futura Black. From these few sign letters came the inspiration for a digital font of the same name, Apparel JNL – which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

The wealth of vintage hand-lettering styles found in a 1941 edition of the Speedball® Lettering Pen instruction book has allowed Jeff Levine to re-draw a number of them in digital format for today's designers. As with other fonts in the Eckhardt Series of sign painter-inspired styles, this font is named in honor of Jeff's good friend Albert Eckhardt, Jr. Al was quite the talented sign writer, and ran Allied Signs in Miami, Florida from 1959 until his passing.

Franz Fiebiger (1880 - 1932) was an Austrian painter and designer who was associated with the Vienna Secession. In 1908 he created a beautiful poster for the Kaiserjubiläums Möbel Ausstellung - a furniture exhibition during the Kaiser's Jubilee. Fiebiger Zwei (meaning Fiebiger Two) is the second font based on one of the hand made typefaces gracing this poster. As I had to work with only a few glyphs, I designed the missing ones myself. Windsor is an unusual design cut by Stephenson Blake in 1905. Windsor is a bold face with heavy rounded serifs and strong diagonal stress. Capitals M and W are widely splayed, P and R have very large upper bowls. The Lowercase a h m and n of the Windsor font have angled right hand stems, e has an angled cross-stroke. The overall effect is one of friendliness and warmth. Use the Windsor font in advertising, on posters and for general display work.

Open, outline or inline faces became very popular in the 1940's. By removing the usual weight, a clear-cut letterform is achieved. In Caslon Open Face, the right-hand strokes are accentuated, providing a slightly three-dimensional effect. The ascenders of Caslon Open Face are large and the overall design of this version does not relate to Caslon 3 Roman. This Caslon Open Face font is good for personal stationery, or sentences where a decorative but distinguished result is sought.

The Wall Street Journal commissioned the original version of Escrow. Cyrus Highsmith designed forty-four styles in this new Scotch series, which sets the tone of the front page of the Journal, envy of the newspaper industry. This version of the family is part of the Reading Edge series of fonts specifically designed for small text onscreen, having been adjusted to provide more generous proportions and roomier spacing, and having been hinted in TrueType for optimal rendering in low resolution environments.

Farmhand is a textured, hand drawn family featuring serif, sans, inline, italic, and extras styles suited for display titling. An all-caps typeface with individually drawn small caps for lowercase. Experiment by mixing and matching the casing for titling effects. Great for packaging and branding. The sans adds a different look but still has the vintage appeal. Try the inline styles to add a little more distinction to your type or the matching catchwords and ornaments to add typographic interest.

An informal decorative sans serif was designed by Gennady Fridman and released by ParaType in 2004. Based on informal lettering. In Russian 'Zubilo' means 'Cold cutter' or 'Chisel'. Colorful letterforms seems to be cut by an amateurish but strong hand used to operate with rough metal tools, not with pen or pencil. The face is good for use in advertisements, posters and headlines, especally for comic editions and youth press. Decorative styles were added in 2011 by the same author.

According to Wikipedia, Tin Pan Alley is the name given to the collection of New York City music publishers and songwriters who dominated the popular music of the United States in the late 19th century and early 20th century. The name originally referred to a specific place: West 28th Street, between Fifth and Sixth Avenues in Manhattan. With this in mind, Tin Pan Alley JNL, a typeface based on the bold hand lettering from a vintage piece of sheet music is aptly named.

Faithfully reproduced from my father’s design drawings made at The Municipal School of Arts and Crafts, Wolverhampton in 1939. Strong nostalgic influences of Art Nouveau and Art Deco. What caught my eye was the consistency with which each particular character was formed: every ‘R’ like every other, every ‘S’ the same. Tight letter spacing and loose word spacing characterised his titling but he didn’t trust himself to print without first ruling guidelines, a hint of which remain in this font.

Gábor Kóthay in Hungary has developed an archaic identity largely based upon lettering from a rare Type Specimen of the Jesuit Academy Press of Tyrnavia (1773). They have developed many baroque style typefaces of Hungarian derivation. Gábor wanted an authentic handwriting revival from that age as well. La Danse is a 'facsimile' font, based on the manuscript of an inventory found in the original Tyrnavia specimen. The manuscript was written in an archaic Latin alphabet therefore some modern interpretations have been inserted.

Eckhardt Sans JNL continues Jeff Levine’s “mini series” of fonts modeled after hand-lettering used by sign painters; and named after his good friend, the late Al Eckhardt of Allied Signs in Miami, Florida. Impresssionable JNL is a font created from samples printed from a vintage rubber stamp toy set. This is a limited character design without spacing or kerning in order to preserve the hand-made look of inkpad printing on paper. A few extra punctuation glyphs, a percent sign and Euro were added to the original characters. At smaller sizes (72 point or less), the letters resemble the imprints of the stamps, but at higher sizes, they take on a different look of deconstructed lettering.

Occasionally a type design is started - then set aside for whatever reason - before eventually being completed. More often than not, the original source material is forgotten, so proper attribution cannot be made. Such is the case for a hand lettered Art Nouveau alphabet likely found within the pages of an early Speedball lettering book from around the 1920s.
