LoveDuets is a family of two novelty fonts that have letters on hearts. There are at least five other font families on myfonts that have have letters on hearts but LoveDuets differs from them because it uses the OpenType feature of Contextual Alternatives (calt) to put two letters on each heart, one on the left side and a second on the right side. The two styles in the family can be used in layers to increase color possibilities. The brace characters have empty half hearts that can be used to replace spaces or to complete hearts at ends of lines. LoveDuets can be used when hearts are appropriate such as for Valentines Day, anniversaries, and weddings.

Footloose was a work in progress when its original designer, my friend and colleague Bob Alonso, passed away. Back then just 14 lowercase letters were designed so far. Several years have since gone by, but lately I took on the task of developing Bob’s design into a full-fledged font. The distinctive style of his supplied letterforms provided much inspiration. In blocks of short text there is a dynamic that communicates much verve and vigor, owing in part to gracefully curving lines and high contrast of stroke weight. I guess you could say that this project has been a sort of “passing on of the baton”; and I trust that Bob would have been pleased with the outcome.

Cut by Monotype between 1900 and 1902, the Monotype Modern font family was based on Miller & Richards News 23 and 28; slightly condensed news text types of the 1890s. Monotype Modern is a lively typeface, with long, fine hairlines and well rounded letterforms, representing the best of nineteenth century modern face design. A classic text face, and typical of the moderns that were produced in the United Kingdom at that time, being less extreme in its rendering than some of the models of purer form being produced elsewhere. Monotype Modern is an excellent text face for magazines, newspapers and books, the heavier and more condensed versions are useful in headlines and display.

However, after many struggles creating a quality typeface digitally, I decided to first draw the complete alphabet by hand on paper, and then trace that digitally. The design of the Jeunesse font family derives from a study of primers which the designer undertook earlier in his career. Jeunesse was designed with the intention of combining excellent legibility and character recognition with the ability to create compact, distinctive words and lines while maintaining basic flourishless letterforms. The sans serif style is pre-dominant in this design, but serifs or rather parts have been added where necessary, mostly at the top left hand parts of the characters, to aid readability. Use Jeunesse as a text and display face. There are also fully sans serif and slab serif versions available which can be used on their own or mixed with each other and the parent fonts.

Jochen Schuss, the Biedenkopf, Germany, designer who was most recently responsible for ITC Vino Bianco, has created in ITC Whiskey a condensed display face that's both angular and soft at the same time. While the letterforms of Whiskey are clearly roman, there's a slight reminiscence of blackletter in the face's narrow proportions, its dark weight, and its persistent internal angle - not quite the 45 degrees common in a classic German textura, but a gentler angle of 25 or 30 degrees. And the counters are all rounded, as are the ends of all the strokes, giving Whiskey a comfortable friendliness despite its severe structure. The character set includes an alternate z" and an "ft" ligature."

Inspired by the large American wood type of the Wild West, Richard Yeend created Italienne Std in 2002. Italienne Std is both very condensed and very decorative. It sports heavy, band like serifs, reminiscent of other italienne-style fonts, like Westside. A sheet music edition of an early 1900s song entitled "You Taught Me How to Love You, Now Teach Me to Forget" was hand lettered in a free-form Art Nouveau style that combined varying line widths and character shapes. This unrestricted style of lettering was popularly embraced and revived by the hippie counterculture of the mid-1960s through the mid-1970s through their rock concert posters, record album covers and tee shirt graphics.
