Tannhaeuser is the work of British designer Alan Meeks, a sans serif typeface with conventional capitals letter complemented by an unusual lowercase alphabet. Solid Deco JNL was modeled after a small sign with the word "restaurant" in an unusual Art Deco solid lettering style. It was spotted within the same image of the Lenox Lounge in New York which gave forth the neon letters that became Sign Sans JNL.

Neuropa is a five-weight extended sans that projects a muscular corporate authority. The bowls of the rounded characters use an ‘obround’ form, and the apexes of the A and V and the uprights on the D and E are curved to suggest a sleek modernity.

Inside the pages of the August, 1930 issue of “The New Movie Magazine” is an ad for Warner Brothers-First National Pictures – hand lettered in a bold Art Deco sans. This was the basis for Movie Production JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Historically, geometric sans families have been based on primal shapes — triangle, circle, square — and the more closely they held to those rigid rules, the more internal inconsistencies they showed. Angles won’t match up correctly, letters will lean, overshoots complicate clean typesetting, and idealized circles become grotesque and unwieldy in some weights. Because of issues like these, geometric sans fonts have a reputation of being cold, austere, even a bit “off”. String Theory has been a 10+ year project in the making which originated from a type workshop in Graduate School at Otis College of Art & Design. The workshop was hosted by Dutch designer Hansje Van Halem, and we were tasked to play with string to create letterforms. Thus String Theory was born, and slowly migrated from yarn, to an illustrator file, to what it is today as a type family. Each glyph has it’s own custom string set up, along with each weight.
