The Cardea family of typefaces is the outcome of David Cabianca’s 2003–04 MA Typeface Design experience at the University of Reading. Book Jacket is arguably the most famous of all typefaces done in the Typositor era. Designed by Ursula Suess over an entire year, and published in 1972, Book Jacket became an instant success story that lasted well into the 1980s (even though it was copied by Phil Martin who published it under the name Bagatelle shortly after its release). Almost 40 years later, Ursula Suess and Canada Type consolidate their talents to bring you a revised, improved and expanded digital version of this film type classic, including small caps, additional swashes and new alternative forms. Book Jacket is available as a 4-font package in Mac PostScript and universal TTF format, or a single Pro OTF which includes features for small caps, swashes, caps to small caps, stylistic alternates, and class-based kerning.

Gerard Unger’s new typeface Alverata is a twenty-first-century type-face inspired by the shapes of Romanesque capitals in inscriptions of the eleventh and twelfth centuries, without being a close imitation of them. It is additionally based on the early twentieth-century model, but tweaked so as to prevent blandness and monotony. Alverata performs beautifully in both screen and on paper, delivering excellent legibility. Its letters are open and friendly in small sizes and lively and attractive in large sizes. They are robust, and show refinement in their detail. Unger’s Alverata is an extensive type family, with versions for both formal and informal applications, and with Greek and Cyrillic relatives. Alverata consists of three different fonts: Alverata, Alverata Irregular and Alverata Informal, that vary in form and width, but maintain the same spirit. The Irregular version is particularly inspired by the Insular letterforms, the uncials, and their constantly changing positioning. Alverata strikes a balance among Europe’s diversity of languages, combining contemporary typographical practices with features of medieval letterforms, from the time when Europe came into being. Visually, some written languages, such as Czech and Maltese, differ quite strongly from languages like English and German, notably because of their many accented characters. While other typefaces will show this difference, Alverata removes it. As a result, Alverata enables harmonious convergence of languages.  For the development of the Greek letterforms, Unger collaborated with Gerry Leonidas (University of Reading) and Irene Vlachou (Athens), and with Tom Grace on the Cyrillic letterforms.

Pochoir is a sweet stencil antiqua typeface with round and thick serifs. Once, on a university trip to Paris, Yanone saw some spray-stencil street art. This inspired him to redraw Underware’s Dolly (with permission) in a spray-stencil style, making many adjustments to weight and character shapes to bring about Pochoir. The art form of stencils have first appeared in Paris in the 1980s.

Ross George in his numerous Speedball chapbooks called the pattern for this typeface Stunt Roman. A studious observer may discern that many of the wackier letterforms were tamed to produce the popular font University Roman; however, this version remains unapoligetically true to the original. All versions of this font include the Unicode 1250 Central European character set in addition to the standard Unicode 1252 Latin set.

There's an appealing quirkiness about Amrys, which offers a confidently unusual alternative to more conventional designs. Its charm lies in its tapering tips, flexing stems, and unexpected notches, which combine to suggest something of the chiseller's tool at work. As a modulated serif, its letter shapes live between serif and sans serif, lending the design a sense of pleasing irregularity – something that's really highlighted at larger sizes. However this is also a typeface that works for text, injecting rhythm and texture into reading. “It's distinctive, idiosyncratic, and weird,” says its designer, Ben Jones. He started designing Amrys while studying an MA at Reading University, creating it in response to a brief for a magazine typeface. Amrys features an extensive and impressive character set. In addition to Latin, Amrys covers several scripts including Cyrillic, Greek, Arabic and Armenian. The family consists of 8 weights, from Light to Black, with matching italics.

TwentyFourNinetyOne [2491] is a reinterpretation of the alphabet of 1919 by Theo van Doesburg; the original a true rendering of the thinking of the Dutch-based art movement “de Stijl.” Jump forward to 1980 and prop lettering used on the Buck Rogers in the 25th Century television series; a vernacular typeface that was a utilitarian mix of geometry and pixel-based forms, used to symbolize the futuristic universe of 2491. At times it would appear on spaceships, laser guns, signage at space ports or in one episode, a Spandex tapestry. It only seemed logical to combine and rethink the letterforms, add ligatures + other extras, and see what the results would be. Futuristic, fun and bold to read! 2491: In the future, all type will look like this.

Bo Berndal: "Rene Decartes, the great French philosopher, was invited to Sweden in the 17th century, when the country was at the height of its power. In the university city of Uppsala he used the Latin name form Cartesius. The typeface that carries his name is inspired by letterforms from the 1600s, but upper case letters are of pure Roman type". Cartesius holds up well even under less than perfect circumstances, and is suitable for magazine and book design. It comes with a full range of styles, including small caps. Newspeak is a display typeface based upon Soviet architectural forms from the Stalinist period (spanning the 1930s—'50s). Stalinist architecture is now considered unsightly and without aesthetic merit, yet it has a strange beauty, hinting at an unrealised utopia (while its function was to buttress a brutal dictatorship). Inspiration was also drawn from the Cyrillic alphabet which, to kids growing up in Western Europe in the '70s and '80s, was a cipher for an alternative way of living – Cyrillic letterforms represented the exotic, familiarity-twice-removed universe of Eastern Bloc states. When you visited a communist country you were confronted with unfamiliar typography that reinforced your sense of alienation and unease that there existed a real, if imperfect, working alternative to consumerism.
