Erdogan Karayel, a master in graphic arts and a cartoon artist, has long dreamed of transforming characters made up of his own handwriting into fonts. This dream has come true with the technical support of Karayel's school friend Sabahattin Kayış, a graduate of the Istanbul School of Applied Fine Arts (Marmara University Faculty of Fine Arts). The biggest problem of handwritten fonts in the font world is the difficulty of reading in long texts due to their curved and flexible letters that create spacing problems when used side by side. The "Karayel Calligraphy", on the contrary, is created as a solution to this problem. It's a font that is sufficiently fluid, visually satisfying and easy to read. In particular, a lot of effort is made to ensure the utmost harmony between the character's spaces. The “Karayel Calligraphy” font is now available for download.

SL Che is a homage to Ernesto Guevara de la Serna, “El Che”, who lived between 1928 and 1967. El Che turned into an universal icon through a memorable photograph which was reproduced and multiplied to the infinite. It was that way he became a synonymous of resistance, revolution and change for lots of generations. That "Che" comes back today by the hand of the genial Jorge Alderete, who designed heroic, laughing and cool variations of that popular first icon. Nomina is a family of sans serif fonts for use from large to small sizes. The weights of the family itself contain 16 styles plus italic, ranging from ExtraLight to Black. The font family takes was inspired by classic Grotesk typefaces such as Venus and Akziden Grotesk. Introducing Goga, a versatile sans serif family available in 10 weights from hairline to black. It is a typeface that combines the best of geometric sans serifs and neo-grotesques. It draws inspiration from typefaces like Avenir on the one hand and Helvetica on the other. Although Goga is a universal and neutral typeface, it is rather warmer and friendly in nature. Anabella is a typeface made for the Master’s Degree in Typography at the University of Buenos Aires. It is inspired by the posters of pizzerias located in Naples, Italy; in order to be used in the pizza franchise Giuseppe in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The font preserves and rescues gestural features of these posters, adding a vertical axis and high contrast, typical of the Italian types that arrived in the city product of the immigration. The stroke with brush provides a more organic quality to the sign and provides connotative features. The family has three variables for the different applications that may be required in a pizza place: Italic for bodies greater than 16 pt, Roman for short texts up to 14 pt, and Stencil for use in brands and titles. Anabella was selected to participate in the eighth typography biennial Tipos Latinos.

PODIUM Sharp is Extended version of DUDU typeface designed in 2012. After many years I’ve decided to rebuild and develop this typeface by adding new masters and weights. Finally PODIUM Sharp consist of 234 styles: from ultra compressed hairline to extra expanded heavy. Main purpose of this project was idea to make hybrid between different modular and geometric woodtypes that I found in old polish specimens: Rex, Blok, Bacarat etc. Thanks to big range of different styles, PODIUM will be perfect choice for visual identities, posters and display usage. For better comfort of using PODIUM I’ve prepared new idea of styles naming based on Frutigres’s Universe and Climbing evaluation. First digit means width and the second weights of style. (So for example style 1.1 is ultra compressed hairline, 6.5 is something like regular and 9.13 is ultra expanded heavy.

Identitype is very pleased to present Varent Grotesk, a sans serif family designed by Hendra Maulia and Aulia Rahman who was inspired by modern sans serif. The weights of the family itself contain 18 styles plus italic, ranging from Thin to Black. Ideally, it works to capture in a graphic way the universe related to technology, sci-fi, industry, and similar topics. It is a mixed family because of the construction of certain letters (as in “a”, “e”, “h”, “k”, “A”, “B”, and more). Another important line in the creative concept of this typeface is the function of its ink traps, which, in addition to fulfilling their primary function, serve to gain gestuality in its use. This font is capable of covering complex design needs by enabling association with specific themes, which makes it highly competitive in its graphic line.

Vette Letters are thrilled to add maverick designer Dirk Uhlenbrock to the family, with the release of VLNL Bromfiets. Bromfiets (the Dutch word for moped) is a ‘holiday child’, the basic idea coming from a stop at a road junction in the Dutch coastal province of Zeeland. The Dutch signage, the black and white rings of traffic light poles, the symbols for brom- and snorfiets have always appealed to Dirk. While on vacation in Zeeland the first scribbles and digital drafts were created, always in mind that the typeface had to be striking, clear and friendly. The end result is more than that, a strong and instantly recognisable font with a matching dingbat weight full of icons and arrows. Stencil fonts have always interested Dirk, the informal character and the possible universal use as a paint- or spray-stencil on a wide variety of surfaces makes this type of font so interesting for me. The technically necessary dissolution of closed font contours always ensures a special aesthetic: What’HAT and HOW MUCH has to be removed or left, in order to make words easy to read and to avoid a fractal impression. Dirk Uhlenbrock has been working as graphic designer and illustrator in his hometown Essen, Germany for over 30 years. Always interested in typedesign he got in contact with Fontographer in 1996 and started to create and distribute loads of free fonts through his online platforms ‘Eyesaw’ and ‘Fontomas’. A bunch of these type experiments have been extented on request to complete fonts.
