Popty Ping is Welsh slang for microwave oven. It literally means ‘oven that goes ping’. Popty Ping was sort of based on an older font of mine called Jambo. It is a very happy cartoon font, ideal for children’s book covers, ice cream packaging and microwave popcorn (preferably the non GM kind). Comes in two great styles and more diacritics than you can pop in an oven!

This font, is dedicated to all the Russian and non-Russian Babushkas around the world. This font was created using a flat brush and Chinese ink. Wedding Regular was originally designed by Morris Fuller Benton for ATF and released as Wedding Text in 1901. It is a lighter version of his ENGRAVER'S OLD ENGLISH of the same period. Wedding Regular is based on the Textura style of blackletter that continued in popularity in England into the 16th century, long after the Dutch, French and Italians had moved to a Roman model that expressed the Renaissance humanism of the period. Wedding Headline is a still lighter version of the regular text face, suitable for setting larger sizes while still preserving the delicacy of the decorative hairlines. Textura continues in use in England and the United States for newspaper mastheads, gift shop signs, wedding invitations and programs and other applications where a feeling of tradition is desired. I recently saw an 1980ish photo of a “Tubby Isaac” sign in London using textura. I believe Benton’s design captures that feeling without being heavy-handed and still remaining quite readable for eyes accustomed to Roman lettering. The Handel Gothic? typeface has been a mainstay of graphic communication for over 40 years - all the while looking as current as tomorrow. Designed by Don Handel in the mid-1960s, and used in the 1973 United Airlines logo developed by Saul Bass, Handel Gothic was an instant success when released to the graphic design community. Its generous lowercase x-height, full-bodied counters and square proportions make the design highly readable at a wide range of sizes. Handel Gothic's slightly idiosyncratic character shapes gave the face a futuristic look 40 years ago that retains its power today. In addition, its Uncial-like lowercase is instantly identifiable - and unique among sans serif typestyles. Award-winning type designer Rod McDonald was attracted to the simple, decisive forms of the original, but he felt the design needed to be refined and updated. ?One of my goals was to bring a modern typographic discipline to what was really an old phototypesetting font.? To achieve his goal, McDonald re-proportioned every character and balanced the delicate relationship between the curves and the straight strokes. He also added a number of alternate characters to extend the range of the design. ?I wanted to give designers a large enough character set so they wouldn't feel constrained in what they could do. I want them to be able to play with the fonts, not just set words.? McDonald enlarged the family from the single-weight original to five weights, each with a full suite of alternate characters.In 2015 Nadine Chahine designed matching arabic weights to this family.

Sardines is a project by Jacques Le Bailly aka Baron von Fonthausen. This original version is the one that saw the light as a monospaced font student project and which would eventually grow into Vette Letters’ largest font family (see VLNL Neue Sardines). Sardines is an eclectic mash of classic curves and mathematical measurements, leaving a very distinct typographic flavor. While most of our type is market-fresh, this one comes out of the can, but it’s delicious nonetheless. And it’s great for adventurous BBQ-ing!

Relato has a low contrast and “a muscular” structure that makes it useful for setting longer text. In display sizes it has a variety of details that lends it a unique and personal expression. The formal principle of the serif, the variety of terminal strokes and the combination of curves and semi-straight lines gives the Relato a more “human” flavor. The inspiration for the design comes from different traditional calligraphic styles. The upper case letter, for example, is based on roman capitals from the Rennaissance, whereas the lower case relates to humanist handwriting. Even so, Relato is a decidedly contemporary typeface, proposing individual ideas on the design of type. The italic has a distinct typographic color thanks to the construction principle of broken lines. The bold weights have an increased contrast in the union of the strokes which helps improve legibility in small sizes and reinforce their personality in display sizes.
