A few scant examples of die cut gummed letters (R, C, Y and &) provided the design inspiration for Adhesive Serif Letters JNL. Influenced by the Caslon style, this typeface offers clean, legible titling. The sample letters were once manufactured by the Tablet and Ticket Company of Chicago and sold under their brand name of Willson's [named for the founder of the company]. Gummed letter sets were available in a variety of styles and sizes for various sign, merchandising and marking needs.

Gorodets is a symbol font based on traditional wood-painting style from the town Gorodets on Volga river, Russia. The main motifs of it are decorative flowers, birds, horses and even people, drawn in special way and painted in black, red, blue and green. The Gorodets typeface consists of 60 manually traced images divided into two parts: filled and empty ones. The typeface can be suitable in greeting cards and other printed materials to make them look decorative in a traditional Russian way.

Decadent, baroque and refined. Sinuous curves, ornate swashes and alternates that can be customized to suit your burlesque ball, bodice-ripping romance novel or high-fashion label. The “Swash” version includes swash capitals that can be toggled on or off using the ‘swash’ option in Adobe apps. The “Title” version includes drop-caps that connect with an underline that runs under the regular characters. These again can be toggled on and off using the ‘swash’ option. Designed specifically for AT&T by Matthew Carter at Mergenthaler to replace Bell Gothic with a typeface that made effective use of digital typesetting technology, Bell Centennial gets several more lines per page than Bell Gothic, reduces calls to information because of its significantly higher legibility under adverse printing conditions, saving AT&T many millions of dollars per year. Although intended for use at small sizes, Mazda UK used Bell Centennial at huge sizes to striking effect in a mid-1990s ad campaign.

A retro-style can be regarded as lack of original contemporary ideas. But also as passion for nostalgic time-traveling. Everyone wants to return to their youth at least for a moment. Inicia was one of my first designs (hence the name) from the mid-eighties. The original drawing was never finished because there were too many similar typefaces around. After three decades the shapes of the old designs suddenly became tempting to finish. Now restored and completed at Storm Type Foundry.

Under the commission of the American Century Magazine"", Linn Boyd Benton designed a new text typeface in 1894 with a design typical of the Neorenaissance movement in typography. Morris Fuller Benton produced various interpretations of this font for American Typefounders and the companies Linotype, Intertype and Monotype quickly took up the typeface. New Century Schoolbook font is a very legible font, fairly narrow and with relatively little stroke contrast. This font is from Morris F. Benton and appeared in 1915.

A very glitzy Blitz! I always wanted to design a typeface that was top heavy, but I never knew how not to make it look like Antique Olive, until recently -- I had an idea. My new family is very readable despite it beeing top heavy, thin on the low end and thick on the upper end. The font gets a special shine because of this effect. Playing with old rub-on letters led to this alphabet. On the Letraset sheets (the older ones still remember...) there were always letters left over that were never or rarely used. I sometimes let interns play with it. To explain, I first rubbed an example myself. Two y's from a Helvetica made a pretty shape. Looking closely, you see a contoured, italic N. I developed the HGB Ypsilon font from this N. A purely decorative typeface – it could be interesting for some logo.

Hibagon is the Japanese equivalent of the Yeti from the Himalayas, or Bigfoot from North America. It is usually sighted on Mt. Hiba (Hiroshima prefecture), hence the name. I have never seen Hibagon myself, even though I have visited Hiroshima several times. Hibagon font is a nice, handpainted, all caps font with a mythical feel to it. It probably won’t scare you, but it will look good on anything that needs a bit of brushwork, or a bit of roughness.

Stefan Hauser designed the fun font F2F BoneR in 1996 for the trendy German techno magazine Frontpage. Other technofonts designed for this magazine are available under the label Face2Face (F2F) from Linotype. The basic forms of BoneR are similar to those of a classic italic, however they display an unusual degree of slant to the right. Some letters were consciously made awkwardly thick, making the overall look spontaneous and spotted. The fun font BoneR is suitable for short and middle length texts.

Influenza, whose name means 'the flu' in a number of languages, is a fat, single weight typeface. It's a bastard typeface, each character stands alone as an independent angular structure. Some characters have stylised blackletter features, some are quasi-bitmapped, some are blends between upper and lower case. This also inspired the name since the flu virus changes every time it comes around, it's a new disease every time you have to stay home under the covers drinking hot tea.

Never let it be said that a good pun and a good font name can't work well together. The vintage sheet music for a 1920s-era song called "King Tut" (not to be confused with the novelty tune by comedian Steve Martin) presented an oddly-interesting block font which is now available in digital form as Type Uncommon JNL. The pun derives from the font's name of "Type Uncommon", which is similar in sound to King Tut's full name (which is Tutankhaten).

Saffran is a project of Erasmo Ciufo and Alessio D’Ellena. Saffran is a clear sans-serif with big x-height, short ascenders and descenders, that works well both for headlines and main bodies of text. The objective of the design is to improve readability of small size texts, by clearing the junctions and enlightening the structure of each letter as a consequence. The broken junctions, inspired from the hebrew alphabet, turn into spiky endings that connect to the flat sides only under 7pt.

Random Thoughts is a selection of of quite simple handmade capital letters. They are legible, almost mono-lined, handmade and they are a bit jumpy - but never the less, they suit a headline that needs a catchy look very fine! I've included 4 different versions of each letter. One lowercase, one uppercase and two contextual alternates. These 4 different versions automatically cycle as you type, leaving your text quite random - but still very clear and legible! And, of course, there is multilingual support!

Because of delays in production, the face was never used by the magazine. However, Gimbel Brothers, the famous New York department store, opened in 1910, around the time of the release of the typeface, which was used almost exclusively for its advertising and was often known as Goudy Gimbel, but the typeface was better known by the Monotype series number Goudy 38.

Rivertale inspired by the flow of a river. Rivertale have a little bit of a wavy curve on some gliph that give a little psychedelic touch. Rivertale have a flexibility to used as a formal font or a more casual font and it give a little bit feminim style. Rivertale came with Reguler and Oblique fonts. It has a ligature and support multilingual language. It can easily be matched to an incredibly large set of projects, and good for communicating your brands.

Pattycake family is artsy and friendly. Pattycake is a 3D sketched block letter font with lots of hand-drawn energy and bounce. Pattycake Solid is a smooth and cheerful stand alone font that complements Pattycake, and works nicely as a loose fill under Pattycake so you can easily have fun with color! Both fonts have double-letter ligatures in upper and lower for plenty of movement, and are ready to brighten any fun project, especially those designed for young people.

The design for Granjon was produced at the English branch of Linotype under the direction of George William Jones and appeared in 1928. This reproduction of a Garamond typeface was based on the typeface sample of the Frankfurt font foundry Egenolff from the year 1592 . The roman characters of the sample were made by Claude Garamond and the italic forms were designed by Robert Granjon. Jones made sure that the Granjon font remained true to the original characters of Garamond and Granjon.

Our Purple Purse Pro draws its inspiration from a vintage Ivory Soap ad from the 1950’s. Somewhat of a cross between Bodoni and Pixie, this font finds that it never truly takes itself seriously. The fun little bounce within the typeface gives it a perky personality. The Yenisei Inscriptions consist of a total of 158 Turkish inscriptions, kurgans (graves) and rock stones that have been found along the Yenisei River, which passes through the Khakasya, Tuva and Altai Autonomous Republics in Russia. The inscriptions were written with Turkish Stamps, which we know as the Orkhon Alphabet. In addition, there are dozens of versions of the Turkish Runic script, apart from the Yenisei inscriptions and the Orkhon inscriptions. I will present the other versions here as soon as possible.

Alinea is a typeface in 3 styles (Sans, Incise, and Serif) conceived for being mixed in the same document. Alinea incise is a flare serif (incise in French). It finds its origin in the roman letters carved in stone. The great advantage of such a style is that it can be associated to any other style of typeface. The most famous flare serifs are: Optima of Hermann Zapf, Pascal of José Mendoza, Amerigo of Gerard Unger and Alinea Incise of course!

ITC Vintage is a collaborative effort by California designer Holly Goldsmith and Ilene Strizver. It was inspired by several character shapes found in an all caps headline from a 1915 magazine advertisement. Working under Strizver's art direction, Goldsmith sketched the remaining caps in pencil on vellum, revised them, and after scanning them, added the final adjustments in Fontographer. It includes a caps and small caps alphabet. ITC Vintage is a classic and dignified headline design that suggests elegance and simplicity.

Aderyn is a hand drawn, elegant font with a light touch to it. Aderyn is soft and sleek, but also comes in bolder styles to give a little extra oomph to your designs. Elbow Grease was made with, yes, you’ve guessed it: Elbow Grease! It started off as a grungy font, but it didn’t look right, so I reworked all the glyphs. Then I forgot to save the font, so I had to start all over again. Naming a font was never this easy! Elbow Grease is a didone-ish font with some seriously warped glyphs, a lot of panache and a ‘get-it-done’ attitude. Also comes with a toolkit full of diacritics.

The BD Roylac typeface has its roots in some lowercase glyphs drawn by Jacques Loison in 1972. Some of these characters are included in the use of stylistic alternates. As good as Nylon is, there’s nothing better than a nice woolly blanket. The smell and coarse, uneven texture are relaxing and feel reassuring. More comfortable. In a world where technology can reach millimetric precision, sometimes it’s good to connect with the imperfect and controlled impurity that is nature. Font design in particular has matured through software that can generate the most perfect letters in the world. But most of them don’t have soul. Landa is a glimpse from the cutting edge into the past. Inspired by Venetian lettering from the 15th century, whilst giving them new meaning, its letters become expressionist and have a modern touch. The curves are vintage and the serifs are big. They're so big that for years I never had the courage to tackle this intimidating font. But when fellow signmaker Frank Smith laid the groundwork for this intriguing typeface by Frank H. Atkinson, I couldn't pass on the opportunity to take it from paper to keyboard. After all, at over 100 years old, I felt this alphabet had never been given a proper, digital treatment. So how did this face survive the last century? Well, for those who don't know the history, it survived in Atkinson's ubiquitous book, Sign Painting, published first in 1908, the generational standard for anyone interested in sign-related type design. The layouts and lettering treatments in this book have influenced countless designers for more than a hundred years, but most haunting to me was this strange face with the big serifs. Well, I'm haunted no more. The work is done, the kerning is complete, and nothing but a mouse-click separates a very old idea from the modern world. It's wide, it's big, and with those crazy serifs, it is definitely eccentric-!!!
