Years ago, I developed an interest in the Japanese art of dwarfed potted trees, bonsai. I bought some books on the subject from Brooklyn Botanic Garden. In one -- Handbook on Bonsai: Special Techniques (seventh printing, February 1976) -- the type was bad. Old worn lead type, I suspect, spread wide in the tops of characters and disappearing on the bottoms. Two decades later, I came across my Brooklyn Botanic Garden collection and was struck again by this interesting type. Inspired, I made a typeface. Didn't take me long to decide on a name for it, either: a name with a double-meaning, based both on its look and its inspiration. Bonsai, the typeface, has two styles, a roman and a true italic.

The Swedish designer/typographer Anders Bodebeck designed the Bodebeck type family in 2002. The family, which includes five different styles, is primarily intended for use as a titling, or display face, and belongs to the neo-transitional style of typefaces. Transitional style type first appeared in England during the late 1750s, when John Baskerville released his first sets of type. Bodeck bears similarities to another, later transitional style typeface as well - Eric Gill's Perpetua (originally released by the British Monotype Corporation in 1928). Like these two previous English stonecutters turned masters of typography, Anders Bodebeck has given us a modern re-interpretation of classic letterforms. Wisdom Teeth is the fifth typeface released by DM Founts. It's a modern and personal take on the original Baby Teeth font by Milton Glaser, and inspired by the lettering used for the Pac-Man series of games (and its clones). This typeface was around 25 years in the making, and was made in response to the large number of hideously bad clones of Baby Teeth circulating around the Internet. Version 1.0 Included in Version 1.0 are a number of accent characters, and alternate characters for A and Y, along with the usual ASCII characters. For the time being this is an all caps typeface. During a visit to London in 2008 I fell in love with the square font used on the British car number plates. I was immediately inspired to start working on this font and have been developing it intermittently ever since. Several more trips to London and the project evolved before it finally took off and became Shentox. Despite the starting point being inspired by simple, everyday car plates, the font soon evolved into something fine and very rich in detail. Even though the square genre is very restrictive, Shentox is a highly legible contemporary font with a full range of weights, useable not only as a display family for headlines and posters, but as a distinct, clean font family for branding and general editorial use (Especially magazines). It has been carefully drawn paying extra attention to the details, high end finishes that makes Shentox a safe font for use in large scale work. For example, the curves of every individual corner have been adjusted character by character to avoid the common problems encountered with square fonts (Eg. darker corners between weights or a visually inconsistent radius between the Upper and Lowercases as a result of copy/paste). Shentox italic, which has a 12 degree slant, has been corrected to avoid distortion when slanted. The radius of the upper-right and lower-left corners are more pronounced, giving it a more fluid Italic feel. Shentox is available in Open Type format and includes ligatures, tabular figures, fractions, numerators, denominators, superiors and inferiors. It supports Central and Eastern European languages. Now here's a font with an unusual backstory. You may recall that a while ago we discovered that Tim Burton was using an outdated version of one of our fonts for the interior titles in his The Corpse Bride. Well, our quest to get hold of him didn't bear any immediate fruit, but in a totally unrelated event we were contacted by the graphic arts company working with the overseas distributors for The Corpse Bride and it turned out that they needed a font based on the main title of the movie so they could keep the same style when they retitled it into other languages. The original title was either hand lettered or a heavily modified font, bearing some resemblance to our Ligeia and Tuscarora fonts, so we had to create a whole font more or less from scratch and extrapolate most of the letters from the very limited sample in the original title by identifying certain consistent characteristics and building new characters around them. It was a lot of work, but the good news is that they didn't want exclusivity, so we've got the font to add to our collection. We ended up calling it Beynkales which means 'Bone Bride' in Yiddish, which makes sense given the context of the movie. So here it is, in all its tattered glory, and bound to end up in our Halloween font selection later this year as well. Beynkales Alternate is a companion font that includes a full set of alternative upper and lower case characters which can be used on their own or in combination with the characters from Beynkales to create a more varied and handwritten look.

This is the redrawn and expanded version of an alphabet Rebecca Alaccari made back in 2009 as a bespoke font for a tourism agency looking to recapture the appeal of New Orleans after the hurricane Katrina disaster robbed it of its core industries. The brief back then was to "revive the unique spirit of what always made Nola great for new adults, which is the excellent combination of history, romance, food and music." No word of a lie, the brief actually contained "new adults." Storyville contains two interchangeable sets of forms drawn in the doodly, loose and organic way now conspicuously popular with today's young designers, almost every one of whom thinks they will get to design something for a boutique coffee bar somewhere. Well, this whole thing perhaps means freedom, youth, fun, happiness, good stuff like that. But just in case, a little caution doesn't hurt: Use this font only if you know what you're doing. We don't want to go back to the 1990s. Please. We were nearly done for by that exposure the first time around. The ligatures feature in this font does some pseudo-randomization, so the forms in doubled letters don't repeat. Serious fun can be had by also applying the stylistic alternates feature, or picking a letter in the middle of a setting and disabling the ligatures feature. Or various sequences of all that. If you don't like any of that stuff, just forget about it. Uh, wutever.

Dulcinea is the title of Ramiro Espinoza’s in-depth look at Spanish Baroque calligraphy’s most extreme tendencies, and especially at some of those produced by the writing masters Pedro Díaz Morante and Juan Claudio Aznar de Polanco. These 17th and 18th centuries alphabets with their plentiful calligraphic flourishes represented a marked break with the harmonic and angular Renaissance Cancellaresca style. It was Morante who first introduced and popularized the use of the pointed quill in Spain, and although his famous text entitled “Arte Nueva de escribir” – first volume published in 1616 – contains alphabets that have much in common with traditional broad nib Cancellaresca calligraphy, most of the examples therein are outgrowths of the new models put forward by the Italian master Gianfrancesco Cresci. The writing’s swashes are complex and intricate, but at the same time they feature a profusion of defects. Many of them sometimes come close to ugliness. However, these pages contain an artistic essence that bears a relationship to the ironic and sometimes somber character of Spanish Baroque. That’s why the name of the font pays homage to “Dulcinea del Toboso”, the fictional beauty from Miguel de Cervantes’s ‘Don Quixote’, a work that reveals many of the period’s conflicts, such as the contrast between utopian ideals and reality, uncertainty and madness. But Dulcinea is far from being just a revival. Its forms are not careful tracings of the outlines of Morante and Polanco’s letters, nor are they attempts to reproduce them digitally. In fact, the author of the letters says that had the font been created that way it would have been too archaic to serve as acceptable contemporary typography. However, he believes that there are myriad interesting details that can be rescued and preserved, along with the playful spirit of the original. The work of designing Dulcinea consisted of combining original historical elements with the creativity and calligraphy of the font’s author in order to produce a modern typography that isn’t based on the same traditional sources as many recently created scripts fonts. Dulcinea offers attractive options for the setting of texts and headlines: abundant ligatures and swashes along with intricate alternate characters. It sophisticated forms make it an ideal option for women’s magazines, recipe books, lingerie products or perfume packaging.

MotionBats are a sort of movable type otherwise. It is a symbol font type family integrated by 9 styles. The idea behind designs is to give to typographic pictograms –static for definition– the dimension of motion. In pursue of this spirit, each font shows a complete motion sequence. MotionBats are inspired on the photographic work of Eadweard J. Muybridge [1830-1904] –a talented multi-faceted Englishman– who worked in USA by the second half of the 19th century. In those early times of photography, he started –almost by chance– taking a comprehensive and impressive photographic sequential series of human and animal locomotion. This way, he placed himself more than a decade ahead from the beginning of cinematography. This type design family points to pay a humble and certainly incomplete homage to such a pioneering and amazing Muybridge's work.

Eterea is a formal font inspired in the monumental inscriptions of classic Rome, but not strictly sticking to the ancient roman typographic characteristics. Its unique look is the result of mixing diverse typographic styles, but mostly having traces from the 16th century transitional style. It bears a big difference of proportion between upper and lower case, additionally to the upper case having much more ornamental traces. Eterea has four different flavors of capitals which change very slightly in the cursive versions. In the italic versions, the lower case (actually small capitals) changes substantially its characters to make its reading more flowing and is not simply an inclined version of the letters. Eterea is a very expressive font, ideal for titles and short texts of sober and elegant appearance.

Franciszek Otto of Poland designed Linotype Notec in 1999. Linotype Notec is a low-tech" (or even "no tech!") typeface. By embracing handwriting's spontaneity, it has gotten as far away from technology as it can. Classified as an "inky"-style script face, for lack of a better term, Linotype Notec's informal design seems immediately artful and full of expression. Its irregularity and unexpectedness enlivens any composition, similar to how jazz or modern dance animate a room. Quite full of "ink," Linotype Notec's "strokes" are written in a sort of short-note-handwriting-style, which a slow-writing, thoughtful humanist might theoretically scribble to himself late at night. Yet Linotype Notec's character still maintains a jolt of energy; try Linotype Notec in small applications, in any size from 12-point on up."

Probably one of the most unusual applications of a stencil took place in 1964 when Union Carbide [then-owner of the still-new line of "Glad" brand plastic wrap and storage bags] sponsored a $100,000 contest to match up a stencil of their logo in order to win a prize. The magazine ad told of how one thousand lucky participants would win $100 by simply taking a die-cut stencil of the brand name to the store and overlaying it on the logo printed on the food wrap box to see if it aligned perfectly. The hand-lettered title proclaiming "match the stencil and win" was done in a casual sans design and reflected the cheerfulness of many typestyles found in ads during the late 50s and early 60s.

Years ago, by happenstance, designers Nancy Mazzei and Brian Kelly found an old decrepit typewriter in an abandoned lot with tall grass in Brooklyn. They kept it around their apartment for two years. Then one day they decided that it was time to move and they planned to throw the old typewriter away. But it was so beautiful they wanted to keep at least a part of it. So they decided on keeping the keys. They kept the keys in a brown bag until one fine day the keys were introduced to a camera. It was a match made in heaven that resulted in some beautiful quirky images of typewriter keys. These images were the inspiration for Backspacer. They were scanned, traced and turned into a working typeface by Zuzana Licko.

Benson Script is a script that is desperately trying to be anything but a script. With 3 contrast levels, and 2 styles, the six styles of Benson Script are an experiment in the diversity of a single stem width. Modernism’s desire to fit all elements within geometric constraints and adhere to strong verticals has spread throughout type design, but has had little to do with the frills and ornaments of script. Cutting a script down to its bare bones is an offensive idea to many—almost seeming insulting to its genre. Benson Script bridges that genre gap between frill and function. As a matter of genre Benson Script errs on the side of modernism, and adds flair as a last resort. Read more about her open type features, and the development process here.

Kris is a powerful typeface based on humanistic minuscule with a touch of Uncial script. An alphabet with an unusual appearance. It is based on the paradigm of classical handwriting. Kris is handwritten with a broad nib pen and ordinary black ink. The somewhat fanciful shapes are created by lifting the pen randomly left and right. This causes unpredictable frayed edges that make the typeface exciting. It bursts with character and is very versatile. Kris is written by the Dutch calligraphy artist Corrie Smetsers. Corrie threw all basic characters in a plastic bag and René Verkaart built the typeface and created all remaining characters. “Most special about this project was collaborating with Corrie. She's an expert in handwriting and has developed writing systems for the educational sector for decades”, René says.

AlphaBravo was born on a napkin. I was just doodling, playing around with letterforms when the ballpoint glided a little bit too far and suddenly I had my first letter with the dash sticking out on the left of the e’s horizontal line. I quickly checked on how many letters I could let a line stick out! Then I wrote a couple of words that way and letters joined in the most unusual places, creating new closed forms. I gave the font a try and quickly discovered, that I had stumbled onto an interesting new typeface. I didn't know how to call it, so I simply used the first two letters of the alphabet, Alpha and Bravo. Looking forward to Charlie and Delta, your very curious, Gert Wiescher.

Devin is designed mainly for the benefit of the advertising industry, and it surely is a nice typeface for headings, isn't it? And you should see what a nice body type it makes! I had no other typeface in mind when working with it, but I can now find several typefaces it is related to. It reminds of the egyptienne group, but I did't really plan that. The name Devin is taken from my birth region. There is a castle with that name on the northern Adriatic coast (known even from Rilke's Duino elegies - Duino is another name of the same castle). A castle ruin called Devin, too, can be found on a height above the Danube in Slovakia, not far away from its capital Bratislava. Devin was released in 1994.

Font family Opticum is not just a set of fonts, it’s a maze construction kit that hides letters inside. Each inscription is a little brain-twister with variable difficulty, where the level is defined by the style. The third one is the most difficult. When you type with these fonts you fill the space entirely without spaces because characters in the fonts don’t have side bearings and the leadings are set to zero.
