The unusual name for this Deco style typeface comes from the playful and pun-laden 1960s Rocky & Bullwinkle TV show. It is the name of the newspaper in the mythical town of Frostbite Falls, MN, home of the two cartoon stars. The name, Picayune Intelligence, literally means “pretty dumb”, but we don’t think that describes Nick’s competent design at all. It is comforting to know that someone is still watching quality television.

Happy Halloween (and All Souls Day and Day of the Dead)! I’ve seen other fonts made up of bones of various kinds, but none with this variety. Henry Gray’s Anatomy of the Human Body (the book, not Grey’s Anatomy, the TV series) was heavily scoured to find more unusual bones shaped like letters. You’ll find Los Muertos both fun and appropriate for the up-coming holidays. (Uppercase is Solid, lowercase is Outline).

Comic books based on popular characters have been around pretty much since the advent of comic books themselves. An edition of the "Car 54 Where Are You?" series published by Dell (and based on the hit TV show created by Nat Hiken) displayed "Car 54" in a bold hand lettered stencil design on the cover. These few characters became the inspiration for Patrol Car Stencil JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Festiva is based on lettering found on a 1960s kitchen appliance catalog. It evokes ’60s TV and pop culture while still having a contemporary feel. The fun exuberant flavor of this face is perfect for parties and celebrations. The letters dance across the baseline and the lower case wants to be an upper case but just can’t quite make it. A throwback design reminiscent of 1950s signage and print ads, Merrymakers JNL takes a previous release (Bluesman JNL) and places the letters and numbers inside parallelograms with ‘TV screen’ openings. Merrymakers JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions. The upper case A-Z characters have the taller side of the shape to the left, while the lower case a-z has the taller side to the right. Beyond broadcast Like Truman Burbank, the star of The Truman Show, FS Truman was born for TV. You’ll know it from Sky One’s on-screen trails and announcements, but it’s just as at home in other media. Its starting point was the skeleton of a highly legible, space-saving, corporate font with some of FS Dillon’s geometric discipline built in. Its distinctive tone of voice and “ownability” are in its boxy but friendly shapes, and characters with hybrid features. FS Truman’s weights and widths were honed to work at TV screen resolutions. A face for TV it may have been, but this is a font that works on every level, on screen, in print, in headlines, in listings, in longer text, in tight corners and open spaces. The space-saver Compact, condensed but crystal clear, FS Truman comes into its own where a lot needs to be said in not a lot of space. Its letter spacing allows the type room to breathe, even at small sizes, while its fulsome x-height and diminutive descenders pave the way for tighter leading. A natural for headlines and titles over three or four lines. “Hybrid” features With every font, Fontsmith look for crafty new ways to imbue letterforms with a consistent character. The idea with FS Truman was to introduce “hybrid” features. In open letters such as “c” and “s”, for example, the top terminals have straight, vertical cuts while their lower terminals have a more angular, cursive finish. Boxy, spacious forms with unusual curves and angles create not just highly legible and efficient letters but strongly distinctive ones, too.

Mancave SRF is the perfect font for the ultimate party Neanderthal. Holding court in his den with a case of beer, wide screen TV and all of his sports buddies, he is safe and secure in his lair. Patterned after cheap neon signage, this face has class, all of it low. Uppercase only, the lowercase positions are filled with an assortment of cheesy neon graphics, intended to be used at twice the point size of the caps. Named after a 70s TV show about a hotel with a defective neon sign. Both versions of this font contain the Unicode 1252 Latin and Unicode 1250 Central European character sets, with localization for Romanian and Moldovan.

Dean Martin starred in four movies as Matt Helm, the titular character in a series of spy novels by Donald Hamilton. Martin’s version of the government counter-agent followed his TV persona – a fun-loving ladies man who (in this case) just happened to be a spy. The movie poster for 1966’s “The Silencers” has its title hand lettered in an extra bold sans serif stencil style. This is now available as Spy Stencil JNL in both regular and oblique versions.

The original superellipse typefaces coincided with the emergence of the CRT (cathode ray tube) TV screen, but there is more than this visual analogy of high-tech in play, as the pumped up angularity of the curved components of the genre also informs the quality of set text. Something about the swoopy loops in the uppercase characters of this typeface, originally called "Ronde", reminds one of the signature 'do of a certain real-estate-mogul-turned-TV-celebrity, and so this font was named. Reservation Wide is intended for headlines with its relatively snug letterspacing and extended forms. Its simplicity will accommodate smaller sizes and lower resolution displays. This painterly tendency becomes more apparent in the heavier weights keeping them from looking too imposing. Neither pastiche nor revival, Ember does seem to evoke the famous French designer's trademark elegance.

There are times when a typeface is used so consistently that it becomes somewhat synonymous with the subject it's used in. The opening and end titles for the ABC-TV series "Naked City" (1958-1963) were set in a bold version of a popular font emulating the look of calligraphic hand lettering. Arcaro JNL is a somewhat lighter and slightly modified version of this typeface and is offered in both regular and oblique versions. The name Arcaro comes from one of the regular characters in this superbly-written police drama, Detective Frank Arcaro.
