Fracture is a broken font -- broken into many pieces -- yet it still conveys a powerful and modern message. It is a funky, in-your-face font that has strong overtones of modern rap and hip-hop culture. Its fragmented look brings to mind graffiti, contemporary youth culture, kids-on-the-move. Fracture is a must for movie posters, event posters, CD & DVD covers, clothing ads & swing tags, funky magazines, in fact, any product aimed at the young, trendy market. The font is letterspaced and kerned and has a complete character set (all upper and lower case, numerals and mathematical symbols and a complete set of accented and special characters).

Ares is a crisp all-caps display typeface suitable for sci-fi logos and titles. It owes its peculiar futuristic vibe to angular, top-heavy letters that hang from the cap-height instead of sitting on the baseline. The typeface consists of six subfamilies available in 10 weights, as well as as two variable fonts of three axes: Weight [wght], ranging from 1 to 1000, Mid-height [MHGT], ranginf from 0 to 1000, Tracking [TRAK], ranging from 0 to -40. The mid-height axis affects the typeface's waistline, including crossbars, and divides the fonts into three subfamilies: Ares Lo, Ares, and Ares Hi. These three families are solid-stroked, and the other three families are their stencil-stylized counterparts: Ares Broken Hi, Ares Broken, and Ares Broken Lo. The tracking axis is only available in the variable versions, and proportionally affects the kerning, thus helping set the type more tightly without effort. Ares supports a wide range of Latin-based orthographies, including not only European, but also Vietnamese as well as major African languages like Hausa, Fula or Ewe.

A piece of sheet music for “Broken Blossoms” circa the 1920s or early 1930s has its cover title hand lettered in a wide thick-and-thin Art Deco design. This is now available as Flower Shop JNL, in both regular and oblique versions.

Science Fair JNL emulates the effect of connecting the broken lines of a stencil alphabet into a solid letter form, such as many students did for posters on their science project. In this case, the base font was Jeff Levine's Paramilitary JNL.

Although a sans serif, Colosseum owes its style to the original Trajan Roman form. Borrowing some characteristics from Friz Quadrata, in its san serif form it is more adaptable to text usage whilst still having a modern and original look which works well in headlines.

News Ticker JNL was inspired by some 1930s film footage of the famous electronic message sign that surrounded the New York Times building in Times Square. A blank panel is located on both the regular and broken vertical bars for use in spacing between words.

Maria Martina Schmitt was born in Vienna, Austria in 1950. Since 1998, she has been working as a freelance designer, focusing on cultural collateral, economic publications, illustration, type design, and logo design. Airam blends contemporary legibility with historic blackletter forms, creating a contemporary text face that speaks to the old European past. Airam certainly appears darker than most other contemporary text faces. Airam’s letterforms are slightly broken, too. They display angled joints in lieu of smooth curves. This “broken” aspect actually aids legibility at smaller point sizes. While Airam may not be suitable for setting whole books or newspapers, this font will add a splendid touch to short tracts of small text. Additionally, Airam looks superb in large headlines.

Using examples of antique street signs from New York City, Stickball JNL recreates the iconic lettering in a digital typeface and is available in both regular and oblique versions. For a nostalgic touch, a blank street sign is located on either the solid or broken bar keystrokes.

Derived from Valibuk, Britva is designed like from broken glass for eye-catching headlines. It's a heavy, condensed face with a high x-height and tight spacing. Public Utility JNL digitally duplicates the look of those small white-on-black self-adhesive stickers used by cities, power companies and telecommunication firms in order to identify utility poles and other service locations. A blank rectangle is available on both the solid and broken vertical bar positions.

A vintage booklet from the Japan Tourist Bureau entitled "How to See Matsushima and Environs" had the title hand lettered in the Art Deco style which is the basis for Travel Brochure JNL. For those who prefer a more traditional 'E', it is located on the broken bar keystroke.

Earlier this year, my eyes fell upon a discarded wedding invitation on the sidewalk. A closer look at it revealed that it had at one point been victimized by rain. Some of the fancy script letters were not quite broken, but sort of melted and run-down, while the rest were still somewhat intact. That's how Scroll was conceived, as an idea for a script where thicks and thins blend to produce a wet appearance. Unlike most available broken scripts, the Scroll script was originally drawn in its own juiced context, and not based on any existing script. This font is great for atmospheric antiquity, deep natural poetry, still life captioning, gothic music posters and collateral, or horror literature and poetry covers.

Spotted in an online auction was a set of brass stencils (possibly handmade) of which some of the characters were individually displayed. The interesting placement of where the letters were broken into stencil parts inspired the creation of Trade Stencil JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

A large assortment of stencil lettering guides made in the 1940's, 1950's and 1960's have been a treasure trove of wonderful "lost" stencil type designs. Schoolmarm JNL continues this series by font designer Jeff Levine.

Designed with a flat brush and inspired by the modern fraktur from Rudolf Koch, Berliner Fraktur is composed by broken strokes, adding a handmade feeling to this geometric kind of calligraphy. VABA is a caps typeface inspired by the work of Vladimir Bartosek, Slovak designer. VABA refers to the Slovak typography in the 30ties of the last century, but it also appears modern and original in today's design. Typeface has plain, broken structure, it is significant in text, which makes it ideal as a display type.

The boss of extended typefaces, Brian Bonislawsky, has belted out this ultra wide design, EuroMachina, that looks like an odd meld of OCR-A, Microgramma and Bank Gothic. Combustible is a hot, handwritten script font. I don’t really know why I named it Combustible - maybe because I scribbled this one down with near frozen hands. Combustible was made with a medium sized Japanese brush pen. It is a messy script, yet highly legible. Comes with double letter ligatures and a matchbox full of diacritics.

Instant Protest is a font I made with a broken satay skewer and Chinese ink. Yes, like so many of my fonts, but these particular tools are my favourites! It is a slightly cursive, yet very legible font. It comes with serious language support (Greek, Vietnamese, etc) and some cool contextual alternates that cycle as you type.
