  2. Actium by Type Mafia, $45.00
Actium is a contemporary multilingual sans serif typeface developed to help perfect typography automatically. Type Mafia has focussed on words with odd combinations of capital letters and numbers, such as product names and postal codes such as WD40 and H1N5, jump out of the text. They sit awkwardly together as the numerals have been designed to work with the lowercase, not the uppercase letters – affecting readability. To fix this Type Mafia invented Smart Capo™. Smart Capo™ Smart Capo is a feature that automatically activates once you type an uppercase letter together with a number. When a capital letter is sat next to a numeral, Smart Capo converts the letter to a mid-cap — a contemporary alternative to small caps — and the default old-style numeral to a lining numeral. Actium’s mid-caps and lining numerals have been designed with the same height (between cap and x-height) so they sit comfortably next to each other and fit more harmoniously into text. Smart Capo applies equal attention to capitalised words without any numbers, such as NAVO and USA, and are also automatically set into mid-capitals. Working on its own, Smart Capo saves time and money for the typographer — taking the pain out of text formatting — and makes it a more pleasurable experience for the reader. This feature is made possible by the use of ‘contextual alternates’, an OpenType feature used in modern font software, working with a set of characters specially designed at mid-cap height. By default these changes automatically take place so it doesn't need to be switched on, it will just work. Actium Actium’s design has an unusual diagonal contrast — much more common in a serifed face than in a sans serif — giving it more bite. The typeface looks elegant when set in large sizes and remains very legible when shown in small sizes. The family consists of six weights in two styles, making a dozen fonts. Weights range from light to black in roman and true italic. All fonts are fully loaded with functional elements. Actium boasts an extended Latin character set and with Greek. This means a wide range of Western languages are supported: perfect for use in bilingual publications and packaging. For numerals, each font includes old-style and lining figures in both proportional and tabular widths, with superiors and inferiors. These allow you to select the right set of numbers for the right task.
  3. Avenir Next by Linotype, $97.99
Avenir Next Pro is a new take on a classic face—it’s the result of a project whose goal was to take a beautifully designed sans and update it so that its technical standards surpass the status quo, leaving us with a truly superior sans family. This family is not only an update though, in fact it is the expansion of the original concept that takes the Avenir Next design to the next level. In addition to the standard styles ranging from UltraLight to Heavy, this 32-font collection offers condensed faces that rival any other sans on the market in on and off—screen readability at any size alongside heavy weights that would make excellent display faces in their own right and have the ability to pair well with so many contemporary serif body types. Overall, the family’s design is clean, straightforward and works brilliantly for blocks of copy and headlines alike. Akira Kobayashi worked alongside Avenir’s esteemed creator Adrian Frutiger to bring Avenir Next Pro to life. It was Akira’s ability to bring his own finesse and ideas for expansion into the project while remaining true to Frutiger’s original intent, that makes this not just a modern typeface, but one ahead of its time. Complete your designs with these perfect pairings: Dante™, Joanna® Nova, Kairos™, Menhart™, Soho® and ITC New Veljovic®. 5. Angulosa M.8 by Ingo, $38.00
At first glance, »Angulosa M.8« is one of those fonts that a technician or engineer would probably draw. And yet it differs fundamentally from typefaces constructed in this way. The right angle forms the basic element of the »Angulosa M.8«, but that's about it with the pure mathematics. Serif-like upstrokes and downstrokes on some letters improve readability, and carefully used slants makes the appearance a little friendlier. The proportions are not based on any mathematical principle, but are derived from freehand writing of the letterforms with a broad quill. In terms of style, »Angulosa M.8« belongs most closely to the modernist, constructivist typeface attempts, such as those undertaken at the Bauhaus in the 1930s. The styles of »Angulosa M.8« range from "Condensed" to "Expanded", from "Light" to "Black", plus the respective oblique form, which in this font is slanted to the left. All variants can be adjusted continuously in the variable font: the font width ranges from 50 to 150, font weight from 300 to 900, upright [0] and italic [1]. The »Angulosa M.8« supports all European languages including Eastern and Central European, Turkish, Greek and Cyrillic.
  6. Sutro Shaded by Parkinson, $25.00
My affection for Slab Serifs began in the early 1960s in Kansas City when Rob Roy Kelly was at the Kansas City Art Institute, teaching and writing his book on American Wood Type. I got to know him just well enough to gain access to his fabulous collection of wood type and wood type catalogs. Later, in the1970s, I tried to re-create a Nebiolo Egiziano for Roger Black at New West magazine. And again for Roger, in the 1980s, I designed a Slab Serif logo for Newsweek Magazine. Finally, in 2003, designed the Sutro Family. There were things I didn't like about it, so, over time, I’ve been adding some things and dressing it up a little. Sutro Shaded has existed for a few years as a one color, outlined, drop-shadowed display font. It seemed like it was just dying for a little color. I added five more fonts: Fill, Gradient, Hatching, Rules and HiLite. These fonts can be used in different combinations to achieve various effects. There is a downloadable SUTRO SHADED USER MANUAL PDF in the Gallery section for this family.
  7. Larken by EllenLuff, $42.00
Larken is a confident serif. Designed to reflect nature, it creates a sense of natural softness and expressiveness. We pushed the concept into a usability focused direction, to work as a bold tool and beautiful communicator. Larken variable allows fluid design across 7 weights, italics and major latin based languages. True italics advance the aesthetics, bringing energy and making it suitable for modern design. The type family melds organic curves and gentle repetition into powerful and harmonious type. At large point sizes you can appreciate the letter shapes, whilst the same restraint and focus creates an even texture for small point sizes and long reading. The font broadens its use by supplying weights all the way from thin to black. The natural curves, swells and sloping trunks, grow in character as the font gains weight. Whilst the thinner weights have lowered contrast and optical corrections to create a warm and gentle appearance. The Larken character set incorporates additional symbols, stylistic alternates, unique ligatures and case sensitive punctuation - producing a stable workhorse family ready to tackle projects of any size.Check out Jeko which is a great pair for Larken.

  12. Sabon Next by Linotype, $57.99
The design of Sabon® Next by Jean François Porchez, a revival of a revival, was a double challenge: to try to discern Jan Tschichold´s own schema for the original Sabon, and to interpret the complexity of a design originally made in two versions for different typecasting systems. The first was designed for use on Linotype and Monotype machines, and the second for Stempel hand composition. Because the Stempel version does not have the constraints necessary for types intended for machine composition, it seems closer to a pure interpretation of its Garamond ancestor. Naturally Porchez based Sabon Next on this second version and also referred to original Garamond models, carefully improving the proportions of the existing digital Sabon while matching its alignments. The new family is large and versatile - with Roman and italic in 6 weights from regular to black. Most weights also have small caps, Old style Figures, alternates (swashes, ligatures, etc); and there is one ornament font with many lovely fleurons. The standard versions include revised lining figures that are intentionally designed to be a little smaller than capitals. 13. MFC Spindler Borders by Monogram Fonts Co., $19.95
The inspiration source for MFC Spindler Borders is a collection of border treatments revived from the “Catalog 25 TYPE FACES” by Barnhart Brothers & Spindler. The border designs were recreated from two different border sets, “Classic Art Borders” and “Classic Black & White Borders”. This collection of borders represents a structured repetition of elements in various ways to create elegant patterns and backgrounds. You can start with a new document or work on a new layer within an existing document. Select MFC Spindler Borders from the font menu. (Some users may have font previewing enabled in the font menu which will cause the font name to appear as border elements, disable this option in order to choose the name) Make certain that the point size of the font is the same as the leading being applied to the font so the borders will meet up properly. While we’ve adjusted this within the font, your program may override these settings. For instance a 12 point font should have 12 points of leading. Download and view the MFC Spindler Borders Guidebook if you would like to learn a little more.

Some Fill fonts look as if they may be used as stand alone fonts but others simply do not look good used as a plain font. The Fill font for Old Thunder was designed to work as both a fill and a regular font, although when used as a regular font the letter spacing will appear a little wide. If needed the spacing can be adjusted in some applications font settings, check the help file in your application for further information on spacing. 16. Iskra by TypeTogether, $49.00
A practical sans serif need not appear dry, constructed, or derivative. It can excel in its sensible role and yet possess a distinct flair. Iskra (spark or flash) is a new sans serif designed by Tom Grace. It was conceived to challenge the limits between utilitarian and decorative. Sporting a low-contrast profile, it is a study of bridled energy in the Cyrillic and Latin scripts. Its eye-catching forms are an oblique tribute to the less-predictable style of brush lettering, and contain daring, elegant curves, economical proportions, and a slight top-heavy asymmetry. Its warmth comes from the subtle emphasis on the structures and details of individual letterforms, whereas its solidity is demonstrated through its balanced rhythm over long spans of text. Each font supports over 75 languages and is hand-tuned for a pleasing legibility and aesthetic both in print and on screen. This type family makes an excellent choice for presentations, articles, branding, and advertising. Available in 14 styles, Iskra represents a fresh, stimulating, forward-looking perspective on how we see both the vitality of the particular letter and the overall harmony of text. Iskra is available in three different character repertoires: Iskra, complete set — Iskra CYR, Cyrillic-based subset with a Latin supplement — Iskra Cyr, Latin-based subset. Both the LAT and CYR series conform to most standard codepages used by typical software covering their respective scripts. All three series have similar OpenType functionality."

  30. FS Emeric by Fontsmith, $60.00
Right now! FS Emeric reconciles a pair of seemingly opposing approaches: the systematic but chilly functionalism of early modernist typography, trapped in time, and a warmer, more emotional, more optimistic spirit. What Fontsmith created was something that marries precision with expression, geometry with movement, functionality with humanity. FS Emeric has a sharp, kinetic edge that cuts across design disciplines – graphic, fashion, product, automotive. It’s about what’s happening right now. Contemporary, optimistic, distinctive – a classic working sans serif. Appetite Discussions with some of Fontsmith’s design studio clients had revealed an appetite for a new kind of typeface that could express mid-century modernist principles in a fresh, contemporary voice. As he crafted the letterforms that would form FS Emeric, Phil Garnham was guided by two central ideas. First, there was Jan Tschichold’s contention that a good letter is “one that expresses itself, speaking with the utmost distinctiveness and clarity”. Second was a belief that a font can be personally expressive without compromising its functionality. These provided the fuel that drove the project to its conclusion. Posters To mark the launch of FS Emeric, Fontsmith asked 11 eminent design studios from around the world – the likes of Pentagram, Studio Dumbar, Bibliotheque, Non-Format and Build – to create a limited edition A1 poster. Each poster celebrated a different weight of FS Emeric, and just 50 of each were screen-printed by Dan Mather onto 175gsm Colorplan stock. “We gave away a randomly selected poster every time two or more weights of the FS Emeric were purchased,” says Phil Garnham. “They’ve now become somewhat of a collector’s item in their own right.” Superfamily In the spirit of Univers, the original font superfamily, FS Emeric now comprises 22 Roman and italic typefaces overall, making it one of the most versatile and functional modern fonts across all kinds of media, as well as one of the most distinctive.

  36. Performance by ParaType, $25.00
Performance is a set of perforated plates that appear to be characters. The construction of characters is described by sequences of holes whose shape and placement define the appearance and mood of font styles. An interesting feature of the design is an absence of side bearings and leading. Due to this feature a text article set by Performance forms a perforated coherent surface similar to postage stamp block.
  37. Mikey Likes It Corpulent NF by Nick's Fonts, $10.00
Fat and sassy, this ultrabold brush font is based on the works of lettering legend Mike Stevens as seen in his book, Mastering Layout. A natural choice for can't-miss headlines, this typeface also works surprising well for short blocks of body copy. Both the OpenType and Truetype versions of this font contain the complete Latin language character set (Unicode 1252) plus support for Central European (Unicode 1250) languages as well.
  38. Kidsnote by Luxfont, $20.00
Meet Kidsnote, where each letter is like a letter in the margins of the page, written with a ballpoint pen. This dissimilar family of different fonts is framed by the atmosphere of handwritten notes. From block and cursive letters to underlining and mini-doodles, every typeface captures the feeling of writing with a real pen. Like the pages of a notebook, written in small handwriting. Features: - Extras - Kerning
  39. Valise Montreal by Device, $29.00
A condensed loose brush style. This font has a breezy elegance and casual sophistication, yet in a different context or color, it could be seen as nervous and urban. A weird dichotomy. Set in smallish text blocks, it has a surprisingly even color. This is due to a balace that has been struck between keeping the roughness and idiosyncracies of a hand-drawn face but ensuring an overall regularity.
  40. Real Fat by vanAllerlei, $30.00
RealFat is a typeface that has been started with the intention to create a very squared bold font with a futuristic look and feel. The squared shapes also refer to the architecture of big city buildings with small windows. This font fits perfect on modern posters, flyers and other artwork or pixel based work. Most characters have the same width and height and are perfect 'building-blocks' for typographic compositions.
