Gorodets is a symbol font based on traditional wood-painting style from the town Gorodets on Volga river, Russia. The main motifs of it are decorative flowers, birds, horses and even people, drawn in special way and painted in black, red, blue and green. Designer Lynne Yun has incised the darker weights with a super thin inline that emphasises the heaviness of the letters, and creates a reassuring chunkiness. “If I kept the inlines the same, it created a lot of visual noise,” explains Yun. “I wanted each weight to be different enough, so in the end the weight and width of the letters was increasing and decreasing in size, and the inlines were too. The black is almost like an extra black, because the inline is smaller. «Abelina» is a typeface that can be used in display sizes for titles where part of the central premise is to emulate certain features of gestural handwriting.  Concepts like spontaneity, speed and fluidity, associated with the use of certain calligraphic tools – in this case the pointed brush – led to a typographic result based on the pattern-like structure coming from the chancery and italic calligraphic models. «Abelina» - initially designed by Yanina Arabena (Calligrapher, Graphic Designer and Typographer) - is reborn to make way for “Abelina Pro” through the solid work of Guillermo Vizzari working together with Ale Paul from Sudtipos. Throughout its use, “Abelina Pro” maintains the structure of a firm style, integrating a dynamic rhythm in the composition of short texts and offering personality to each of the words it builds. The cover of a 1950s-era catalog for the Freedman Novelty Company (of San Francisco California) had the word "Novelty" hand-lettered in an unusually angular type style against various geometric shapes somewhat resembling balloons. While the lettering was quirky enough to warrant re-drawing as a digital font, the shapes would have presented a visual nightmare in design and spacing, so simple black rectangles were substituted and the letters appear in white. Since novelty lettering of this type would never become "standard" in use, its function became the font's name, Limited Appeal JNL. There is just a simple A-Z and 1-0 character set along with basic punctuation.
