Mantika News™, from German designer Jürgen Weltin, was designed to expand the Mantika super family with text and display typefaces for setting newspapers and periodicals. The suite of typefaces is comprised of regular and bold designs, with italic counterparts, for setting continuous text, and light and extra bold versions for setting larger sizes in headlines, sub heads, pull quotes and decks. The typefaces intended for text copy were designed with shared character widths, so that changes can be made in typeface choice without disrupting line endings or column length. The display designs have a slightly smaller x-height and shorter ascenders creating a more elegant demeanor while ensuring compact multi-line display copy. In addition, fonts of Mantika News have a large Monotype W1G (World Glyph Set 1) character set enabling the setting of Greek, Cyrillic and over 20 Eastern and Western European Latin-based languages. Proportional figures are available, in the OpenType® fonts, as an alternative to the tabular designs.

School Hand is a font designed for use with young children. There is the Dotted version, which is designed to be traced over with a larger dot to show where to start and automatic lines. Then there is the Regular version which can be used for reading or can be printed light grey for tracing. School Hand Cursive is a cursive font which is designed using contextual alternates. Contextual alternates cannot be activated in the Myfonts preview window so please see the gallery images which show how the smooth flow of letters is achieved. MVB Gryphius is a digitization of uncommon type from an era normally associated with the work of Nicolas Jenson. Produced by Otto Trace, the fonts come from types used by Sebastian Gryphius in Lyon in the early 16th century. The italic appears in a book from 1524 and the roman and small caps appear with the same italic in another book printed by Gryphius in 1541. Retaining the rough contours and uneven texture of its source, MVB Gryphius is best used at text sizes from 12- to 15-point, but its old world character can work in display settings too.

A 1934 advertisement for the Roney Plaza Hotel at 23rd Street and Collins Avenue on Miami Beach yielded the inspiration for Tropical Tourist JNL. While this wonderful example of Art Deco lettering survived, sadly the original Roney was torn down around 1969 and replaced with a modern apartment house/condos bearing the same name.

ClickClack is a family designed by Ethan Dunham that is made of hand-drawn typewriter letters. An actual sample of a typewriter alphabet was blown up and carefully traced into the two versions, regular and light. This family has a bouncy, informal feel and is a departure from other typewriter fonts.

Begiko17 is a monoline typeface family which was designed to be a font of ease lecture with features in the rhythm and proportions of school writing. In addition to the standard characters, Begiko17 includes several useful mathematical characters. Its strength relies in the clarity, simplicity and harmony of its traces.

The 1930s French publication L'Art du Tracé Rationnel de la Lettre was a treasure trove of font revival ideas from the Art Deco era. One example featured a serif typeface with a number of stylized characters. This is now available as French Bistro JNL, in both regular and oblique versions.

The name Type Warmers JNL traces its lineage to small catalog booklets issued by Indianapolis' Cobb Shinn for his line of letterpress cuts; of which a few can be found included within this typeface. Presumably type could "warm up to" these stock illustrations and work hand-in-hand to deliver the message, hence the "Type Warmers" sobriquet. Originally known for illustrating many attractive and comical postcards of the early 1900s, Shinn moved into the field of purchasing stock art and redistributing them as electrotypes or "cuts", the predecessor to today's digital clip art. A number of the cartoons he sold can be found in the Shinn Kickers JNL font.

With the rise of digital typesetting and desktop publishing, this typeface quickly became both popular and ubiquitous. This dynamic, wide, boxy design is identifiable via tiny triangular swellings at the stroke endings - what might be called semi-serifs. Serpentine is available in six different font styles: Light, Light Oblique, Medium, Medium Oblique, Bold, and Bold Oblique. Serpentine" is a greenish rock that sometimes resembles a serpent's skin, and is often used as a decorative stone in architecture. Though this font doesn't seem at all snaky or sinuous, it does have an architectural, stone-like solidity. The subtle, almost non-existent curves and semi-serifs keep it from being too stern or cold. Although the underlying strokes of each weight are similar, the six members of the Serpentine font family all present their own individual personalities. Serpentine Light lends itself well to text for onscreen displays, for instance, while the numbers from typeface's heavier weights are seen around the world on soccer jerseys! An ad in the Oct. 27, 1919 issue of the trade magazine “The Moving Picture World” promoted “Princess Virtue” from Bluebird Pictures starring Mae Murray – The Adorable [as noted by the movie studio in the ad]. The Art Nouveau hand lettering emulated the style usually drawn with a round nib pen, but was given a specialized treatment for the ad. It was re-drawn in a more traditional ‘pen nib’ look for digital revival. The end result is Silent Movies JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

An online reproduction of a trade ad circa the 1950s for comedian-actor Paul Gilbert featured his name in the hand-drawn lettering that serves as the basis for Stand Up JNL. While the style of the typeface is derivative of the Latin Spur faces used popularly since the 1800s, the playful – almost awkward angles create a casual design that evokes good times. It should be noted that the extremes of such angles might appear ill-spaced unless kerning is turned on within the application where the typeface will be used.

Samuel Welo’s “Studio Handbook for Artists and Advertisers” contained dozens of hand-lettered alphabets used as inspiration for both the sign trade and for graphic designers. Intertitle Nouveau JNL – available in both regular and oblique versions – was originally an alphabet produced by a round lettering nib, and was first shown in the 1927 edition (later reprinted in the 1960 edition). It is reminiscent of the lettering used on intertitle cards of the silent film era. This font marks an amazing milestone - the 2000th release by Jeff Levine Fonts since its inception in January of 2006.

Tucked inside the November 5, 1927 issue of a German signpainters' trade paper was a single sheet headed Der Schilder und Schriftenmaler, which featured an alphabet called "Neue Fraktur". An exuberant (if somewhat unconventional) combination of Art Deco sensibilities and blackletter forms, the font retains its freshness, even today. Included in this version are Deco bishops fingers at the bar and broken bar positions, and a styling, horn-blowing herald at ASCII circumflex and tilde positions. Both versions of the font include 1252 Latin and 1250 CE (with localization for Romanian and Moldovan) character sets.

“Tropical Type” was Alf Becker’s 148th submission to “Signs of the Times” magazine (a publication for the sign trade) where for years Becker would provide a monthly lettering design to inspire other sign writers. This particular design has more of a Far East flair to it, and was redrawn digitally as Travel East JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions. If there was an American Typeface Hall of Fame, Bank Gothic, designed by the great Morris Fuller Benton would hold a place of special distinction considering this design has survived so many trends in typographic fashion since being introduced in 1930. It's just as desirable today as it was over eighty years ago; arguably more. Today, Bank Gothic is a very popular choice as a titling face for science fiction books, posters and countless television and movie titles. It is also a popular typeface for use in computer games and digital graphics. GroupType’s 2010 revival of this American classic is true to the design, the period, and Benton’s aesthetic. GroupType worked with some of the most talented and experienced type designers that were historically grounded and sensitive to this design project. Fortunately, Mr. Benton has left us a large selection of other great typefaces for insight and guidance. GroupType’s new revival includes the original three weights in regular and condensed style but also a new small cap and lowercase in each font necessary for 21st century typography.
