The original idea for Alda came from exploring an alternative approach to generating different typeface weights by adapting the characteristics of physical objects. I was interested to find out how far this could be pushed before the letters became a parody of what they referenced. Initially I took this treatment very literally, with the boldest weight expressing the tension of bent steel, and the lightest being as spineless as a rubber band. This allowed me to infuse each weight with unique characteristics, where the bold is robust and angular, and the light is delicate and soft.

Initially, I participated in the contest to design the logo for Bill Lloyd. In the end, the design was rejected, but letters remained. I then decided to continue with the idea and complete the entire typeface. After a couple of months, I realized that the typeface was imperfect, and now that I’m working on an updated Lloyd type, this one is free. The main characteristic of the typeface is its bold and curvy shapes. It is also tall and original in design. It was a great experience because it taught me how failure inspires people to move on, and create something better.

A few bold caps drawn by Albert Du Bois for the 1906 Henderson Sign Painter book started me in the direction of looking at how sign painters approached slabs after the industrial revolution. The usual happened from there. My exercise in the early lettering roots of what eventually became the definition of geometric typography ended up having a life of its own. The majuscules led to minuscules, one idiosyncratic bold weight led to six more, and uprights led to italics. What was kind-of-interesting in the early twentieth century persuaded me to make it interesting enough a century later. This of course meant alternates, swashes, the standard baggage that keeps calling my name. Henderson Slab is a family of seven weights plus italics, all full of open features and extended Latin language support. Part of this family’s appeal is its coverage of nearly the entire of the slab serif through the last 100 years — the basis is the manual, humanist origins, the swashed forms come right out of the phototypesetting era, and the alternates and mostly modern constructs of contemporary ideas. The result is a set with the ability to function in modern spaces, from corporate to editorial, in text or display, while both winking and nodding at the roots of what is now considered a geometric endeavor. The idea was to find common intersections between the humanistic and the neo-grotesque model of sans. Nyfors was a sudden idea. I noticed an ad in a magazine, with some handtexted words. I don't recall what the ad was about, neither the words. When I later on tried to remember how the single characters looked like and began to draw them, the result wasn't bad at all. I am not longer sure that they resemble the characters in the ad, but it doesn't matter. Nyfors is a nice handtexted typeface, whatever its origin. There is a small stream in Tyresö where I live and work, called Nyfors. During some centuries there was a center of small scale industries along it, and they used its water to run their machinery. The typeface has its name from that stream. Nyfors was released in 1995.
