A special category of typefaces, combining together principles of both serif and sans-serif, is sometimes described as Linear-Antiqua by German typographers. Years before the "Jet Age", and way before computers and satellite television turned us into jaded "armchair travelers", the ocean voyage aboard giant steamships to distant ports of call beckoned many to travel the Seven Seas. Far away lands had a magic and mysticism to them, for few Americans knew anything about those places unless they read about them in books or saw travelogs at their local theaters. Many songs were written with themes of romantic South Seas travel, and one vintage piece in particular entitled "Down Where the Trade Winds Blow" offered up the hand lettering which served as a model for Sea Cruise JNL.

Akira Kobayashi modified his Eurostile Next design into a fun unicase version. Ascenders and descenders have been traded in for alternates of letters that all share the same height. The effect is similar to using all caps, although this is quite a bit more quirky. For example, letters like the lowercase a and e are now the same height as their capital versions and the lowercase y has been raised to fit between the baseline and top height. Odd relationships such as these give Eurostile Unicase a fresh and funky feeling. Try using it for headlines and titles, then use Eurostile Next for the body text!

The Data Error AOE Family was one of my earliest typefaces, at a time when I had become obsessed with all forms of "digital/techology" typestyles. It's been awhile since the early 2000's, but I've had a hankering for awhile now to revisit this typeface, giving it a more expansive language character set and fill it out with some Opentype features. Inspired by some old printouts of BASIC programs and an Atari 1050 Disk Drive manual with pin printer examples, comes the familiar yet oddly restricted style with this Data Error family.
