The original brief for Vox was a extensive monoline typeface that can be both precise and friendly, yet contain enough choice of seamlessly interchangeable variants for the user to be able to completely transform the personality of the typeface depending on the application. CastleType was commissioned in 1991 by San Francisco Focus magazine to digitize three members of the Standard family. This is a Continental lineale that was popular in Switzerland in the 1950s and later in the United States. A cousin to the classic sans serifs, Standard is an alternative that is considerably warmer and a bit more idiosyncratic. In 2008, CastleType released additional members of the Standard CT family to make it a complete typographic solution with three widths (normal, condensed, extended) of four weights each (Regular, Medium, Bold, and Extra Bold). Some of the original Standard fonts, particularly Standard Regular, appear to have been hastily designed (or perhaps too closely imitated Helvetica); these have been greatly improved in the CastleType versions with more harmonious proportions and other refinements. The three lighter weights of the Extended subfamily were designed from scratch based on the new Standard CT Regular and Standard CT Extended Extra Bold. In the tradition of Goudy Old Style and Goudy Modern, Chong Wah drew Chong Old Style™ and Chong Modern™ as visually different – but complementary – designs. According to Chong Wah, “The extended family of typefaces started as a concept rather than a preconceived design. The concept is different sans serif type styles with a common underlying structure and a clear lineage to traditional serif designs. Jean Evans' interest in type design dates back to her third-grade fascination with fancy script writing. Years later, work at a sign-painting school she found in the Yellow Pages® cemented her relationship with letterforms. Evans went on to study with master calligraphers and type designers, including the likes of Donald Jackson, Hermann Zapf and Matthew Carter. Evans' designs have been exhibited and collected around the globe, and her distinctive calligraphic style has been lauded by leading trade organizations, annuals and publications. Hatmaker, one of Evans' more popular typefaces, was originally developed for the Boston-based broadcast design firm of the same name. Inspiration for the design came from Ben Shahn's famous hand-constructed alphabet. Shahn's alphabet, however, was limited to capital letters. Daunted by the idea of designing a lowercase that would measure up to Shahn's capitals, I developed a second set of caps-simple, quirky, yet almost classic-to work as 'lowercase' with the Shahn-like caps," explains Evans. In the basic version of the typeface, all glyphs have simple chopped shapes, created according to the usual geometric principles. Latimer is one of a series exploring a fusion of Roman and Gothic forms. Characteristics of each genre can be seen: the fluid tapering serifs and rounded shapes of the Roman form, contrasted with the angular diamond and hexagonal shapes of Gothic.

Rosengarten is a condensed, bold typeface inspired by the work of Lucien Bernhard and the Plakatstil mouvement. With bold, rounded serifs, this typeface was created for use in headlines and larger point sizes. A complimentary sans serif style was integrated as a secondary weight with accompanying italics to allow a combination of styles to be set in layouts. This typeface includes an extended Latin and Cyrillic language support.

The design of the Newspoint typeface is based on the tradition of the American sans serif faces of the last century. This form expression was greatly influenced by the News Gothic type which was created by Morris Fuller Benton in 1908, and has, once again, become very popular. When the development of sans serif types such as Futura and Kabel by Renner and Koch began in 1925, the design of American sans serif types receded somewhat into the background. In the 1950’s, however, they experienced a renaissance which continues to this day. Thanks to its clean design and the relatively large x-height, the Newspoint is well suited for informative texts in newspapers, magazines, and brochures. In packaging design, as well, the Newspoint can display its strength in small print. Newspoint was developed as a customer-specific variation of the News Gothic. In contrast to the News Gothic, however, the face appears to be softer and more appealing thanks to the changed interpunctions. If so desired, the alternative characters give the typeface expanded individuality and a richness of design options.

Here's a faithful rendering of an old face from the James Conner's Sons specimen catalog of 1888, alternately known as Aetna or Painter's Gothic. Its compact descenders allow for tightly-spaced headlines. Both versions of the font contain the complete Unicode Latin 1252 and Central European 1250 character sets.

Surf Serif is the font that retains some features and proportions of the old-style antiqua, but is adapted for modern conditions, mainly screen ones. Its uncompromising hard lines and corners create an expressive contemporary image being used in larger point sizes accidents. In the text sizes the font proportions, its triangular serifs and the displaced stresses cause some associations with the early Renaissance and even a gothic style. It makes the text useful where brutal modernity must be combined with historical allusions. For example the font seems to be suitable for decoration and advertising of modern Gothic fashion.

My goal was to design a font able to fit any layout with boldness and playfulness, mixing a sign painter taste in the uppercase and some of my crappy calligraphic reverse contrast explorations with the flat brush for the lowercase. I designed several of widths to fit the page, and though about a different way of expanding the family shifting the horizontal stress axis to move the letter weight in different heights, making a 15 fonts family, suitable for making bold layouts. The first three weights of the family were designed at ParaType (ParaGraph) in 1997 by Dmitry Kirsanov . They were based on the artworks of Moscow graphic designer Andrey Kryukov (1923-1997). The original version was developed by Kryukov at the end of the sixties for Russian railways. The proportions and elements of construction were inspired by Eurostile (1962) by Aldo Novarese. It is intended for use in advertising and display typography. In 2009, Dmitry added the new styles, corrected the old ones, and enhanced them with extended character sets.

Dr. Gerard Unger expands the concept of Sanserata to a sans type family with Sanserata, adding specific characteristics which improve reading. Sanserata’s originality does not overtly present itself at text sizes. Rather, at those sizes, it draws upon its enormous x-height, short extenders, and articulated terminals to improve readability, especially on screens. Having articulated terminals means characters flare as they near their end, but readers likely won’t notice. What they would notice is that their ability to take in more content in a line of text is improved because the lettershapes are more defined. Articulation also makes clearer text from digital sources, where rectangular endings tend to get rounded by the emission of light from the screen. Lately there seems a whispered discontent with the lack of progress in the sans serif category. Designs can either stretch too far beyond what is accepted or be too bland to be considered new. Sanserata’s strength is in being vivid and unique without being off-putting. It began as a series of photographs of the rusty metal brand names on old tractors in a museum. When I scanned the photos and began to trace the letters, I found the rust and deterioration created a level of detail which gave my letters a psychotic anger which, as an art director in an advertising agency, I closely identified with.
