One of the best desserts I have eaten in my life was a treacle tart. I do know that it was in England and I do know that it was delicious. I really don’t know why I was thinking of that, but that pleasant memory did give me a name for this font. I am still learning my new font software, which is a bit of a slow process. The software I used for this font allows me to add several languages, which, hitherto, I couldn’t access. So, in short, this is my most multilingual font ever: it even includes Vietnamese and a bit of Hiragana and Katakana for you to get creative with!

In the late 1920s Walter Tiemann cut this font for Klingspor Brothers in Offenbach am Main. It comes close to Luthersche Fraktur and, though quite slender, possesses a good gray value and readability. This blackletter font fits excellently into narrow columns. Doretypo was born accidentally, during the design of a poster for a jazz festival in Rome. I was going to realize a typesetting, but I could not find the right character and decided to draw the letters I needed, starting from the first letter of the headline, capital M. I was looking for a lettering able to evoke musical notes, where each letter could be linked to the following one, to the previous one, to the largest at the top and the smallest at the bottom. From this idea doretypo came to life gradually. In the beginning there were a few medium capital letters with very few glyphs, but given the good results I decided to decline in light and bold, integrating minuscule letters, for a whole of 374 glyphs. Today doretypo OpenType is a family of fonts with three weights, 374 glyphs, supporting about 57 languages, ligatures standard, plus a new “NY”. Moreover, each glyph can be used individually to create textures and graphic symbols.
