This is a deco-style text OpenType Pro font loosely based on Koch's Locarno as seen in KochAltschrift a recent free German tribute to Koch's work. I was familiar with Meek's Letraset presstype version called Locarno, but I never liked the proportions used by either Meeks or Koch. So I radically revised ascender, descender, and x-height to make them more usable and brought the shapes within my sense of design. Mine is probably closer to Meeks than Koch, but hopefully it is a tribute to both. Astaire looks much more modern and it is much more usable. I added oldstyle figures, small cap figures, small caps, several ligatures, and more. There are an italic, bold, and bold italic also in this family

I searched all over the internet looking for a realistic sand writing font and came away empty handed. Undaunted by this, I grabbed my business partner, Mary and trekked down to our local river, the Arkansas (pronounced ar-KAN-sas around here). Using sticks, we scratched out the entire alphabet in the sand, including upper & lowercase, and punctuation marks! I photographed the characters, converted them to line art on my computer and used font creating software to turn it into a true type font! This font was designed for adding dates, places and messages to your beach photos that looked as if you wrote it in the sand before you took the picture! Before the Great War, there were great posters. Posters of elegance and grandeur. Linotype Bengali, a revival This project by Neelakash Kshetriymayum and Fiona Ross commissioned by Monotype is at heart a revival of the now ubiquitous original Linotype Bengali typeface designed by Tim Holloway and Fiona Ross (1978-1982) based on Ross’s research for her doctoral studies in Indian Palaeography. The new Linotype Bengali is informed by more recent research by Ross and Kshetrimayum resulting in additional glyphs that serve contemporary needs in a variety of genres – the original had been specifically designed for newspaper composition and in now outdated digital formats. The new design makes use of OpenType features with the employment of contextual vowel signs for Bengali – a feature that Ross and Holloway had first introduced in Indian scripts for the Adobe Devanagari typeface – and has sophisticated contextual mark positioning. Furthermore, whereas the original design had existed in only two typestyles, extensive work has been undertaken to produce this new design in 5 weights: Light, Regular, Medium, Bold and Black. It has been an important aspect of this project to remain true to the original design concepts, and so to achieve optimal readability for sustained reading at small type-sizes, but the additional weights enable differentiation in document design, and afford users scope to produce textural variety in their outputs. This revival design is intended to widen the hitherto very limited palette of typographic choices in the field of textual communication in Bengali, Assamese and other languages that make use of the Bengali script.

Inspired by the type elements of 17th century Dutch mapmaking, Boncaire Titling provides you with a historic yet adventurous look for your library. This addition from insigne found its muse in a map of Curacao by Dutch cartographer Gerard Van Keulen, a member of the prosperous Van Keulen family from Amsterdam, who were engaged in the manufacture of maps for seafaring. Much thanks on this project goes to The Norman B. Leventhal Map Center, housed at the Boston Public Library. Through the centers kindness, I was able to view a number of period maps in person and to meet with curators, who explained more about the Van Keulen family and the way maps of the period were created. While I studied the maps, I narrowed in on some of the original types unique idiosyncrasies. For instance, the long, exaggerated serifs, which give the forms a sense of stability, aid in the faces legibility--largely a byproduct of the engraving method that was used to create the metal plates for manufacturing these maps. In creating Boncaire Titling, I decided to capture these unique idiosyncrasies, embracing the character of the engravings rather than removing them entirely through over-refining the forms. The result is an elegant family with far more than seafaring potential. This font has a full range of six weights, from thin to black. It also includes a wide variety of OpenType alternates. All insigne fonts are fully loaded with OpenType features. Boncaire Titling is also equipped for complex professional typography, including alternates, smaller titling caps and plenty of alts, including normalized capitals and lowercase letters. There are over 30 autoreplacing ligatures, and the face includes a number of numeral sets, including fractions, old-style and lining figures with superiors and inferiors. OpenType capable applications such as Quark or the Adobe suite can take full advantage of automatically replacing ligatures and alternates. CastleType was commissioned in 1991 by San Francisco Focus magazine to digitize three members of the Standard family. This is a Continental lineale that was popular in Switzerland in the 1950s and later in the United States. A cousin to the classic sans serifs, Standard is an alternative that is considerably warmer and a bit more idiosyncratic. In 2008, CastleType released additional members of the Standard CT family to make it a complete typographic solution with three widths (normal, condensed, extended) of four weights each (Regular, Medium, Bold, and Extra Bold). Some of the original Standard fonts, particularly Standard Regular, appear to have been hastily designed (or perhaps too closely imitated Helvetica); these have been greatly improved in the CastleType versions with more harmonious proportions and other refinements. The three lighter weights of the Extended subfamily were designed from scratch based on the new Standard CT Regular and Standard CT Extended Extra Bold. More recently, four light weights (Light, Extra Light, Ultra Light, and Hairline) have been added to each of the three widths. The entire Standard CT family includes support for most European languages, OpenType features, arbitrary fractions, and a collection of geometrics, dingbats & fleurons.

Mark Stanczyk designed Linotype Typo American in 1999. The font is an excellent revival of American style typewriter type. As most of us can remember from our childhood years, or through old stories and movies, everyone used to type with typewriters before the invention of computers. Unlike computers, most individual typewriters only had one typestyle, or font, to chose from. To make matters worse, the letters in a typewriter font would wear down with use. Over time, text typed out on a typewriter would look more and more corroded, old, and uneven. Stanczyk has captured exactly these features in this “revival” font! Also like most older typewriter styles, Linotype Typo American’s letters are all mono-spaced, i.e., the letter i is the same width as the letter w. Typewriter letters also all tended to be cast in the same size, around 12 points or so. When using typewriter-style fonts, it is best to keep setting your text in similar sizes. (Of course, you can set really large and fun headlines with Linotype Typo American, too; if anything the unevenness of the design will come even more across in these applications.)
