LoveDuets is a family of two novelty fonts that have letters on hearts. There are at least five other font families on myfonts that have have letters on hearts but LoveDuets differs from them because it uses the OpenType feature of Contextual Alternatives (calt) to put two letters on each heart, one on the left side and a second on the right side. The two styles in the family can be used in layers to increase color possibilities. This warning, inscribed on a rock at the entrance of a cave in an inaccessible mountain in the far north of Scotland, provided the inspiration for the font DragonFyre. While I have not seen the actual rock myself, I have based the font on an accurate drawing of the original inscription. DragonFyre speaks of lands beyond our ken, of wistful faerie kingdoms, of dark happenings and white magic. Macaroni Sans evolved from our search for an extended font family consisting of a range of weights in both uprights and obliques, with a contemporary appeal. The desired character was to be sympathetic with a range of high-tech consumer products so a friendly, soft approach was called for. The resulting mix of geometric shape, rounded terminals, subtle italic angle of just six degrees and a few quirky stroke endings met with an enthusiastic response. As its subject product line exhibits brilliant color and imagery, a style was called for that conveyed contemporary appeal and readability but would not compete with the savvy products. We arrived at a clean, modern, sociable look that would suit a broad subject field in either text, semi display or signage. Its simple lines and monoline strokes fit well with logo usage or screaming posters, enhancing letterheads or websites, for foodstuffs to autos, insurance to swimming pools, lawfirms to babyfood. Macaroni Sans is the perfect typeface for branding, logotypes, may even flatter challenging viewing conditions. Rounded types have been around (pardon the pun) for centuries; numerous examples can be seen on old wood type posters, which in a small way prompted the name: in fashion Macaroni was a term used in mid-eighteenth century Europe to describe a dandy, a chap who displayed flamboyance in dress and hairstyle and spoke outlandishly or in an effeminate manner. Hence the term macaronic verse.

I am not sure exactly how to classify these geometrical ornaments. They resemble the arabesque ornamentation of medieval Islamic art, but also have similarities to Celtic knots and to some Chinese and Korean ornamentation. The bolder of the two only works well at very large point sizes, while the thinner is designed for use at smaller point sizes. There are usually similar ornaments on the same characters of the two, but not always.

From today's point of view Katarine has a rather unusual origin. Initially an all-caps display face, what was to become the Medium weight of the family was augmented with a lower case, then the character set was completed by adding all the missing glyphs. The next step was the creation of the Light and the Bold weights with matching Italics. This working method compromised the relationships between the characters across the different weights After some consideration the decision was made to start over and draw the complete family from scratch. This time the "conventional" process was followed — first the Light and Bold weights were designed. Those extremes were used to interpolate the Regular, Medium and Semibold weights. When compared to the original, the glyphs of the new fonts are slightly wider. The construction of the letters is sturdy, with an x-height that varies from the heaviest to the lightest weights. The relationship of the stem weight between the horizontal and vertical strokes is carefully balanced. Characters are open and firm; the italics have room to breathe. The original fonts included two sets of small caps — Small Caps and Petite Caps. However neither set were suited for emphasis, with the Small Caps being too tall and the Petite Caps too short. We decided to replace them both with one set of traditional small caps, slightly taller than the x-height, perfectly suited for emphasis in text usage. The original version of Katarine was partly incorporated into the new OpenType versions. Thus most of the original arrows, frames and boxes can be found in the new Katarine. Each individual weight now contains 830 glyphs, nine sets of numerals, small caps, numerous ligatures and fractions. An additional font named Numbers contains numerals in circles and squares, and is now augmented with accented caps and a number of terminal alternatives, which can easily be accessed through stylistic sets. We also added two extra variants, Experts Regular and Experts Black (in inverted form). Katarine Std preserves the solid construction and excellent legibility of the original family, but has now become a fully featured OpenType typeface. Katarine is suited for a broad range of applications, from simple layouts to intricate corporate systems. It is the typeface of choice where the cold, austere character of modern sans serifs are inappropriate, yet simple shapes and good legibility are required.

Most of my fonts tend to skew more to the darker side in terms of themes and uses. So, as a challenge, I took it upon myself to design a font through the eyes of my wife. The name of the font comes from the Cantonese translation for "peach" (tow); and saying it twice (toto) is just a cuter way of putting it. Sort of like "Peachy". This monospaced version of Galix was commissioned in 2037 by the space exploration company Earth2, as part of a major overhaul of their branding, which had used, since 2021, a generic sans serif (much like every other company). Many specialists in both design and space exploration suggested that this very rebrand started a chain of events that concluded with the invention of time travel in 2041. Contrary to the perceived notion put forward in popular Science Fiction, time travel is only (as of now) possible in the digital realm. It was considered fitting that included among the first files sent back in time should be the Galix Mono typeface, which was remade in OTF format to ensure that it would work with the technology available in 2019. Earth2, for all their insight, did not foresee that the release of the typeface in September of 2019, would lessen the impact of their rebrand. What kind idiots would rebrand a forward looking company with a font that was, by then, almost 18 years old? The subsequent lacklustre response to the redesign didn’t inspire the tidal wave of R&D funding Earth2 had anticipated, and the company went into administration in the summer of 2039, having never invented the time travel which made the release of Galix Mono in 2019 possible. Experts believe that the files sent back in time, although their very sending made it impossible for them to be sent, remained as “time relics” of the future that might have been.

Besley Clarendon ML is our version of the Clarendon registered by Robert Besley and the Fann Street Foundry in 1845. Besley Clarendon ML represents a significant change from the slab-serif Antiques & Egyptians that had become so popular in the prior three decades. Like Caslon’s Ionic of 1844, it brackets the serifs and strongly differentiates between the thick and thin strokes. Besley Clarendon is also what today is considered a condensed face, as a comparison to the various contemporary Clarendons will show. Robert Besley’s Clarendon was so popular that many foundries quickly copied it, a fact that caused him to complain vigorously. The reason it was so widely copied is simple ó it was extremely useful. It provided the attention-getting boldness to highlight a word or phrase, yet at the same time was compact and easier to read than the fat faces and antiques of the period. It wasn't until sixty years later that the concept of a typeface family of different weights was developed with DeVinne and Cheltenham. Mackay is a powerful transitional serif in 6 weights plus matching italics, designed for screen and print. The eccentric serifs on uppercase letters like E, F, L and T are inspired by Alexander Kay’s “Ronaldson” from 1884, working as the starting point for the family.
