Mirfak™ is a new take on a work from Adrian Frutiger made in 1964. In the first place, it was a specific alphabet made for only one book. Only lowercases, capitals, numbers and a few mathematical signs where created. Covering only English language, used only once and unknown by most, we considered this Slab Serif as an hidden gem that needed a modernization. Mirfak™ is a result of a project whose goal was to take a beautifully designed Slab Serif and update it so that its technical standards surpass the status quo, leaving us with a truly superior slab serif family. Entirely coded from scratch with Metafont™, this family is not only an update but an expansion of the original concept, covering now most used languages on earth. Modernized and unique, Mirfak’s 3 weights, light to bold, can give a full range of expression for interfaces and corporate design; in print, on screen and in multiple languages.

This is the one and only Neil Bold, designed by Wayne Stettler in 1966 and originally published as a Typositor typeface. An award-winner and instant celebrity upon its release, Neil Bold became synonymous with magnified modernism for a whole generation. It was a jazz record packaging favorite, especially at Blue Note records, and made regular appearances on science fiction book covers during the last stretch of the genre's golden age. This digital version greatly expands on the film type one. New small caps and biform styles were added to the authentically revived main face (for a set of three fonts), and language support has been extended to include all Latin-based tongues. Neil Bold Pro, the OpenType version, comes in a single font that combines all three fonts into a single file, with programmed features for small caps, stylistic alternates (for biform shapes), a few extra alternates, class-based kerning, and additional language support for Cyrillic and Greek scripts.

Alta California became designer steve mehallo's "vector-based artist's response" to the early Apple Macintosh bitmapped font San Francisco. Alta California was developed using "sampled" wood type and letters from numerous historical sources. The name comes from the Alta California newspaper, the first daily published in California, one of a dubious Barbary Coast nature, a sheet that shaped the bias of San Franciscans and attracted its own grade of reporters, including a printing specialist who went under the nom de plume Mark Twain. Alta California's edges were meticulously redrafted by hand, with letterpress-inspired fallout and 19th century pointing hands. The final collection of rough hewn letters jump, dive, fall, zag and zig. Alta California looks great on greeting cards, food packaging, as retail signage for boutiques, vintage stores or at D.I.Y. sales, on band posters or club cards, in and around historical quarters, or for use on any ransom note that needs to evoke a wild west look and feel.

Texicali is a multiple weight type design based on our FontMesa logo. The idea was simple: create a sans serif with a few slab serifs added resulting in a style that could feel at home just about anywhere. The regular/standard set works well for general use while the Alt set is perfect for when you want to add a little country charm. The Alt set has a few additional alternate letters built in which are easily accessed using Adobe Creative Suite products such as Illustrator and In Design. The X version, with its higher x-height lowercase, is ideal for signage where you want the look of a lowercase, however your sign still needs to be readable from the street. Designed in 1950s Japan by Okanao & Kushiro, the perfect partnership until artistic temperaments drove them apart. The duo spent years crafting the font with the working title “Messenjā”, Okanao bringing technical expertise to craft letterforms, while Kushiro made it his life, obsessively working late into the night to check pages for errors. For him the project was never about making money, it was an artistic endeavor to reprint the great Western works of literature. When he found out Okanao had secretly sold the rights to the font for use as a logo for a major Japanese manufacturer, Kushiro burned all evidence of the designs in a fit of passionate fury. The two reportedly never spoke again. “Messenjā” was thought lost forever until a type specimen was discovered in a vintage typewriter box bought on eBay. Now redrawn and available as 57-nao, a faithful and beautifully crafted monospace characterized by what is considered Okanao’s defining moment, the angular loop on the lowercase ‘a’.

Typeface Laborat™, designed by Kristína Jandová, is a Grotesk typeface that combines the geometry of a circle and a square. The visual message of geometry is applied to stylistic sets and modified by special characters, including abstract forms or symbols, that turn the typeface into a visual “graphic” language. The basic character of the typeface lies in the default set based on the circle-like shapes of letters. The stylistic sets 01 to 03 are characterized by different geometrical modifications of the growing character and the idea “from circle to square” applied on the letters a, f, g, l, r, t, u, y. By using these different alterations of consistent letterforms, it offers a playful space for everyone. The first inspiration of the typeface origins in Paul Renner’s Futura sketches, that were a celebration of geometrical playfulness of modernism meeting constructivism. It is modified into a new contemporary “wave” of typography as a graphical method. Laborat comes in six weights, from Hairline to Heavy.

The term “Surf Bum” was a slang phrase used to casually describe anyone who spent as much of their time as possible at the beach catching waves in the 1960s. The Revell Company was a well-established maker of plastic model kits such as military airplanes, monsters from Universal horror films and other such items when it hooked up with custom car designer Ed “Big Daddy” Roth to develop a model kit line capitalizing on the surfing fad that was sweeping the West Coast at the time. A number of crazy-looking hot rods, dune buggies and what-have-you were turned out, and one such kit (“Surfite”, with Figure) featured a futuristic one-person dune buggy. It was on the box for the model that the words “with Figure” appear in a casual, brush design type face. Those few letters were the inspiration for creating a new retro type face entitled Surf Bum JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

FWD Egyptian Tower is a designers stack-able Display family best purchased as one package. The four versions can be manipulated in your favorite graphics or sign making application to achieve the different effects as shown in the font family ad designs. All fonts are tightly spaced and are very often intentionally overlapped creating a balance for each very unique wider bottomed character. Being stack-able, the designer can duplicate the original text layer and by changing the font on the lower of the two layers to another of the family can then add another available effect. This can be repeated to add other of the available effects. Then by converting the text of the lower text layers to curves or outlines and welding the characters of the words together, the overlaps can be eliminated. This process is fairly common practice for a graphic designer and quite easy once done a few times.

Deus is when type design is brought to extreme. It tries to answer the question whether you can design all glyphs in one axis of stress. It does not try to be all purpose, useful at all sizes, legible or readable and most of all it does not try to be neutral. It has its own style you either accept or not. But if you do so, it has many great stuff inside. Every glyph has the same width across four masters, so you can change the style in one title or even make an animation out of that. It also has some cool animated emojis, so make sure you take all four styles! Deus has two sets of styles. "Deus" that has an expanded glyph set, and "Deus Basic" that comes with a limited glyph set. You can play around with "Deus Basic" since you get it for free, then fall in love with this font family and go for the full version.

I have just returned from a trip to Malaysia, Java and Bali with my family: my wife had some family business there, so we turned it into a holiday. The last time I visited these places was 26 years ago and I knew things would have changed, but I wasn’t prepared for the ugly truth. Malaysia’s interior has been converted into one big oil palm plantation, Java is choked in plastic and Bali is one endless string of concrete hotels, restaurants and cheap tattoo parlours. Plastic Fantastic is not an ode to the many uses of plastic. It is a wake up call: we really need to stop using disposable plastic! You can start by implementing the Plastic Fantastic font family in your durable water bottle designs, the compostable bag holding your organic potato crisps or that big ole sign advertising your local food truck event. Chop chop! VLNL Cleaver is an important tool in the Vette Letters’ kitchen. It’s a butcher knife of a font. Razor sharp, ultra heavy and with pointy slanted serifs. At first glance it seems straight-lined, but a closer look revails that all straight lines are curved inward slightly, which enhances the sharp image even more. Cleaver was originally designed by DBXL for cutting meat - hell, it even hacks right through bone. It can easily splice a chicken in one slash or seperate ribs, just like that. You can also very well use it to chop up hard vegetables like pumpkin or squash on the chopping block. It gets better, the opposite blunt side can be deployed to crush ingredients like garlic, nuts or spices like black pepper. You could use a grinder, but with Cleaver it’s more fun, isn’t it? Lightbox 21 is a radical update of my previous version of a geometric sans serif. The design of the original Lightbox was fundamentally based on the idea of incorporating the proportions of the ‘Golden Ratio’ into each letterform; Lightbox 21 greatly improves on this concept by entirely abandoning it. The result is a much more readable, ‘natural’ typeface that retains elements of the original without being bound to it. Overall, Lightbox 21 has been designed to convey that classic feel of a geometric sans that makes the genre so tremendously enduring and versatile, as well as providing an effortless sense of class to whatever they are applied. Primarily intended for editorial work (i.e. short to medium length texts) or display settings, Lightbox 21 has a reasonably extensive character set, including support for Vietnamese, many currency symbols, arrows, and small caps. It also has OpenType support for nut fractions (via a stylistic set) and a barred alternate uppercase i and an alternate curled j.

I just visited my good friend Jakob Fischer from Pizzadude.dk in Denmark. As always we talked fonts, drank coffee and walked endlessly through Copenhagen, the city where he lives. We thought it would be a fun idea to each create a font from a handmade sign we saw in the city. We only had like 7 glyphs to work with, so the rest was up to our imagination. We also thought it would be nice to give the fonts a similar name. Mundbind means mask in Danish. When you Google translate it, it will give you the wrong translation (it will say 'mouth piece'), so trust me on this one! My font is called Mundbind NL - where the NL stands for Netherlands. Jakob will hopefully call his finished font Mundbind DK - where the DK stands for Denmark. Mundbind NL comes with a monster load of diacritics (including Vietnamese) and two alternate glyphs for the lower case letters that will cycle as you type.

I fell in love at the age of twelve in Wales, recalls Bernard Philpot. "My father brought me to a small graveyard in the Welsh hills to show me two headstones carved by the great Eric Gill. I instantly fell in love with the beauty of the carving and the perfection of the letterforms. I still go back to marvel at these works of art." However, the ITC Bolthole™ design, Philpot's first commercial typographic endeavor, is quite unlike the works of Eric Gill that first captured his heart. Bolthole is a craggy sans serif with a definite grumpy attitude. It's not terribly legible, and, if more than a few words are set in the design, it's not very readable. To round out its cranky personality, Bolthole does not like to be set in small sizes. Like Cheez Whiz® and bullfights, you either love or hate this typeface. But whichever emotion dominates, there is no denying that Bolthole has a personality to be reckoned with - one with ample magnetism to ensure reader attraction. If used to set brief blocks of display copy, the typeface makes a powerful statement. Bolthole was originally designed to complement a whimsical ad for the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. As Philpot recalls, "although the ad didn't win any awards, the type attracted some very positive comments for its original look and feel." Philpot studied graphic design and typography at the London School of Printing, and soon after graduation found himself working in a large advertising agency in London. According to Philpot, "After designing type for everything from packaging to ads, I thought it time to convert one of my designs into a complete font - and Bolthole was born." ITC Bolthole could very well be the Shrek™ of typeface design - which might not be such a bad thing."

Here's what I said about the original Ginza: Sometimes you get an idea stuck in your head and the only way to get rid of that demon is to put something down on paper. A year later the doodles became a skeleton, and then the skeleton had a body, then the body had a name, then the name got a personality. What was left was a clean set of fonts that encompass a very simple skeleton with a lot of visual appeal. And now with Ginza Narrow: Once Ginza was released, I immediately wanted to commit the time to create a narrower version—if for nothing else but to add additional versatility to the skeleton, but my schedule just would not allow it until a client recently asked me to. There was no need to ask twice as I had already started and then shelved the initial builds. I also had the opportunity to expand the localization of the fonts by adding Cyrillic.

The inspiration source for Pantomime Monogram is an unusual Art Deco design from a vintage embroidery publication which combines both sans-serif and flare serif styles to create a diamond monogram format. This monogram, which evokes visions of it etched into bakelite, was originally intended to adorn handkerchiefs and towels, but it has so many other possibilities. It is one of many monogram designs from the early 1900’s which fall into a two letter format that is either adorned or interwoven with framing styles. Whenever I've stayed in Munich my friend Michael Bundscherer and I go on a typographical expedition. When we talk about that, we remember the bygone world of sign painter. On one of the facades of a furniture shop in Munich, you can discover the lettering of the name in golden letters. This one convinced us because of the simple elegance Art Deco. Albertus® Nova is a faithful digital revival of Berthold Wolpe’s earlier design of Albertus and is one of the five designs in The Wolpe Collection of typefaces. This new design enlarges the typeface set from its previous two weights into a robust set of five ranging from thin to black, all with extended language support including Cyrillic and Greek. Berthold Wolpe began working on Albertus in 1932, at the encouragement of Stanley Morison. Morison saw an example of Wolpe’s engraved lettering and liked it so much that he commissioned a typeface based on the design. Since then, the original Albertus typeface has been used on book covers, in branding, on signs and in video games.

As a graphic designer, sometimes it’s impossible not to be inspired by the Swiss Style, specifically the work of Armin Hofmann, who is one of its best exponents. Grids and grotesk and neo-grotesk typefaces are a fundamental part of the tools that make this aesthetic possible. A visual language that has caused full admiration since we were students.
