The script version of the typeface Viabella introduces us to the calligraphic side of the Berlin type designer and typographer Karl-Heinz Lange. The sketches for this script typeface, which resulted from the close cooperation with Veronika Elsner and Günther Flake, found their roots in sketch drawings which Karl-Heinz Lange had already drawn in the 1980’s. For the Viabella design, Karl-Heinz Lange drew the basic letterforms of the Black and Regular cuts with a brush. He then re-worked the drawings and transferred them on to tracing paper. The design studio Elsner+Flake in Hamburg cut these typeface extensions and later digitized them manually with the help of the IKARUS Sustem. With the Regular cut as a basis, Elsner+Flake extended the family with the Light version and interpolated and re-worked the Medium weight. The completion of the family was taken over by the type designer Björn Gogalla who had done the same kind of work on Rotola, a design which Karl-Heinz Lange had also created for Elsner+Flake. While Viabella was originally conceived as a headline typeface, its lighter weights can certainly be used for shorter text applications. The Black version creates powerful headlines with highly effective accents. With the help of swashes, which are available for all weights, the user can lighten up longer texts and add special character to titles. In contrast to pure headline fonts, Viabella has been enriched by an extensive complement of special characters. In addition to the Europa-Plus character set which allows setting type in over 70 latin-based languages, the user will find multiple versions of numerals as well as oldstyle figures, tabular and proportional lining figures, diagonal fractions, and a complete set of superior and inferior figures and fractions (60%). Bo Berndal, the master Swedish typographer, is the eponymous designer of Berndal, a contemporary text family with five different styles. This family represents a new achievement for Bo Berndal, who has spent many years working to optimize text legibility in the printed media. Several small tricks make the Berndal family an interesting milestone in legibility. Berndal's letterforms contain large x-heights. Large x-heights open up the counterforms of letters, making text appear lighter on a page, but their correspondingly shorter ascenders and descenders can hinder legibility. This does not occur in Berndal at all! Coupled with this experiment, Berndal's various font weights display a certain softness and roundness. The letterforms themselves are relatively wide, with an overall consistency in width. The calligraphic nature of the strokes has been minimized, yet a contrast stroke-thickness is still to be noticed within the alphabet. Hey! See Reina Neue in action here! INTRODUCTION When I designed the first Reina¹ circa 2010, I was at the dawn of my career as a type designer. The S{o}TA, short for the Society of Typographic Aficionados, described it as complex display typeface incorporating hairline flourishes to a nicely heavy romantic letterform². And it was like that; that’s what I was pursuing at that time since I was very passionate about ornaments and accolades of Calligraphy. Why? I felt that Typography, in general, needed more of them. These subtle flourishes could breathe life into letters. Maybe, I thought it was the only way I could propose something new into the field of type. However, after some years, I came across a very interesting quote: –Beautiful things don’t ask for attention– Wow! What did this mean? How could something be attractive if it’s not actually showing it. Could this be applied to my work? Sure. I think every type-designer goes through this process (aka crisis) regarding his or her career. At the beginning we love everything. We are kind of blind, we only see the big picture of a project. And that’s not because we are lazy. We actually can’t see the small mistakes nor the subtleties that make something simpler beautiful. We are not able. But, the small subtleties… They are actually everything: With experience, one puts more attention into the details and learns that every single decision in type has to be first meticulously planned. Here I am now, introducing a new Reina, because I felt there was a lot of it that could be improved, also the novelty of Variable Fonts caught my attention and I had to take that to my type library. THE FONT A thing of beauty is a joy forever Now, a decade later, I’m presenting Reina Neue. This font is not just an update of its predecessor: –A thing of beauty is a joy forever– is the first line of the poem ‘Endymion’ by John Keats, and despite the meaning of “beauty” may vary from person to person, and even from time to time (as read in the last paragraph), with Reina I always wanted to bring joy to the eye. In 2010, and now, in 2020. I believe the font is today much better in every aspect. It was entirely re-designed: Its shapes and morphology in general are much more clean and pure. The range of uses for it is now wider: While the old Reina consisted in just one weight, Reina Neue was converted into a big family of many weights, even with italics, smallcaps and layered styles. The idea behind the font, this kind of enveloping atmosphere made out of flourishes, is still here in the new Reina. This time easier to get amazing results due to the big amount of available alternates per glyph and also more loyal from a systemic point of view. However, and as read in the introduction -Beautiful things don’t ask for attention-, if none of the flourishes are activated the font will look very attractive anyway. Reina Neue is ready to be used in book covers, magazines, wedding cards, dazzling posters, storefronts, clothing, perfumes, wine labels and logos of all kind. Like it happened with the previous Reina, I hope this new font satisfies every design project around the world if used, and can be a joy forever. SOME INSTRUCTIONS Before choosing the right style for your project, hear my advice: -Reina Neue Display was meant to be used at big sizes. If you plan to print the font smaller than 72pt, I suggest using Reina Neue, not Display. Otherwise, if the font will be BIG or used on a digital platform, Reina Neue Display should be your choice. For even smaller sizes, use Reina Neue Small. This style was tested and printed in 12pt with nice results. (Note for variable fonts: Print them in outlines) -Reina Italic is not a slanted version of the roman, and this means some flourishes are different between each other. The Italic version has other kind of swirls. More conservative, in general. -All the styles of Reina Capitals have Small Capitals inside. -Reina Capitals Shine should be used/paired ONLY with Reina Capitals Black. The engraved feeling can be achieved if Reina Capitals Black and Reina Capitals Shine are used as layers, with the same word. Carpe Noctem (Latin for ‘Seize The Night’), was a bit of a surprise. Someone asked me if I could create a lower case for my Closet Skeleton font. I began working on it and lo and behold, a beautiful font started taking shape. Gloss Drop is a wild hand lettered typeface, that passed the process of digitization without losing the spontaneous vibrancy of brush lettering. With the power of OpenType it gets real close to what you normally do with ink, brush and paper. Like in real handwriting, some, but not all, letters connect within a word. Automatic OpenType features handle the choice of inital and final forms neighbouring a gap and choose the adequate medial or isolated forms.

This font was inspired from the medieval Dances of Death patterns, as a modest tribute to the famous engraver Hans Holbein's Alphabet of Death. We have tried to keep the spirit of the time -- its sarcastic humor mixed with its objective and frozen realism. The font, consisting in two complete capital alphabets: Initials and caps, and a lot of separate figures added, is especially improved by strong enlargements, 72 pts and more, and has very good results when printed.

Aviano returns to lend its classic line to its newest variation, Aviano Royale--named so because of the rich flow the calligraphic capitals give the established font. The extended lowercase characters give an air of formality to the face as well and bestow on the family a deeper sense of wealth and power. This recent development of a timeless font, part of insigne’s annual tradition of adding to the Aviano family, was elected the clear winner in a poll of insigne design’s social media followers. And is it any wonder why? The long-handed elegance of Royale features graceful script capitals as well as widely tracked and smaller titling capitals, all which make Royale ideal in high-end applications and branding where titling with a taste of gentility is required. Royale’s suite boasts a number of OpenType alternates, most importantly of which are the alternate forms for the capitals. Whereas the default forms of the face are regal, it’s flourishes must be activated through the swash set. For a look more restrained, activate the stylistic alternates. It’s like having three different fonts in one! Additionally, there are baseline lowercase forms. The lowercase forms are 20% smaller in height than Aviano’s lowercase forms, so the families are not interchangeable. However, they can still be used well together. The script capitals could also be used separately as drop capitals and nicely complement any of the other 12 Aviano families. It’s time to look beyond common. This script font was inspired by the type called “Bastarde Flamande”, a much appreciated one in the Duke of Burgundy’s court at the end of 1400s for handwritten books. A book titled Histoire Romaine (Roman history), from Roman author Tite Live, translated in French by Pierre Bersuire, circa 1475, was our main source for drawing the lower case characters and many of the upper case. Each character was written by hand with a quill pen on rough paper so as to look like the originals as much as possible. This font includes “long s”, naturally, as typically medieval , also a few ligatures, final and initial characters but there aren't any abbreviations because the text was written in French rather than Latin. Instructions for use are enclosed in the file and identify how to keyboard these special characters. This font can be used for web-site titles, posters, fliers, ancient looking texts, greeting cards, indeed for many types of presentations as it is a very decorative, elegant and luxurious font. Large type size shows this font at its best.

Lotter blackletter with Drop caps One fine day I found a vintage book, it called “A treatise by the Dominican friar-writer Marcus von Weida on the Brotherhood of the Holy Rosary”. It was printed in 1515 by Melchior Lotter in Leipzig. The text was illustrated by hand-colored engravings on religious and liturgical themes and beautiful initials I like. Lotter was the last name of a family of German printers, intimately connected with the Reformation. An innovation by the elder Lotter was his use of Roman types for Latin, reserving the Gothic types for German. I'm happy to present to you my new font family. Lotter font family has Drop cap and Regular styles. It's all you need to precisely imitate medieval style text. Use Drop cap style as a decorative element at the beginning of a paragraph or section, other part of the paragraph should be in Regular style. Bernhardt Standard, which was designed in 2003 by Julius de Goede, is a flowing Bastarde script. Bastarde is one of the sub-categories of Blackletter typefaces. The term Blackletter refers to typefaces that have evolved out of Northern Europe’s medieval manuscript tradition. Often called gothic, or Old English, these letters are identifiable by the traces of the wide-nibbed pen stroke within their forms. Of all of the various sorts of Blackletter styles, Bastarde scripts are the most flowing, or Italic. The first Bastarde typefaces, cut in the late 1400s, were based on French handwriting styles, especially those styles popular in Burgundy. The flowing nature of Bernhardt Standard makes it similar to some other sorts of Blackletter typefaces as well. Bernhardt Standard, because of its handwritten roots, is also similar to Kurrent, a style of handwriting that was popular in Germany prior the 20th Century. Bernhardt Standard is a very calligraphic face, suitable for formal applications. This typeface would be an excellent choice for certificates or awards. The old style figures in the font allow for nice short settings of text as well.

Labyrindo is inspired on the classic Labyrinth. The oldest known labyrinth is 3200 years old and is to be found in Greece. The mythological king Minos held the monstrous son of his wife ‘Minotaurus’ prison in a labyrinth. Much later the labyrinth made his appearance in the medieval churches, this time as a pattern on the church floor. During the Italian renaissance the multiple gate labyrinth came in fashion. Paths led trough green hedges in beautiful palace gardens. These hedges where perfectly cut in rectangular shapes. Mainly meant as an aesthetic statement. Besides the origin of the physic labyrinth, it has always been a great source of story-telling and myths. I mention a few personal favourites (film) like, Pan’s Labyrinth (a journey to the underworld), Labyrinth (with David Bowie) and the Shining with Jack Nicholson (where a horrific scene takes place in a labyrinth). Not the most cheerful stories but fascinating and intriguing. A Labyrinth is mind boggling and mysterious but wonderful. I made graphic translation in this typeface.
