Grandis ("chainlink") was initially intended for a first person shooter’s UI, so this guided the design. The font had to be readable while maintaining sci-fi feel and also to not rely on kerning (most video games don’t support it). This meant a large x-height, steep diagonals and squared bowls to reduce the amount of white space between letters. Tabular numbers as default facilitate UI design where timers or tables are involved. What makes the font stand out from similar grotesks is the letters’ classical proportions with wide bowls and narrow rectangles. The term Old West conjures up memories of vintage movies and TV shows featuring saloons and dancehall girls. Old wanted posters and cowboys. Rowdy prospectors in the Goldrush, mountains and lots of wide open space. Many of the lettering styles of those days are still in use, reflecting the past, present, and probably the future here. Western style fonts appear in the signage of bars, restaurants, casinos and ski areas. It's a style that speaks of the way it once was in a nostalgic way. This family of three fonts pays tribute to the Old West and its colorful history, with a semi-plain style, a decorated style, and a really lively rendition of our gaudy and raucous history from a century or more ago.

As as a computer programmer, it is my job to stare at screens of text all day. For my first font, I completed a simple monospaced font, Debug, based on my own handwriting. Mickey Mono is much more ambitious: I wanted a humanist design - something with organic curves. It had to be clean and fresh. It had to have the advantages of Debug, like distinctive numerals (to distinguish between 8 and 3) and huge punctuation characters (so I could read complicated Perl one liners). Mickey Mono would be a good friend to me as I struggled through difficult coding tasks. It has a wide range of Latin Extended characters and diacritics, so it can speak French, Portuguese, and Ruby. Grange Rough is an inky, distressed version of Grange that mimics the effects of vintage hot-metal type on rougher paper. Grange is the Device interpretation of the classic “Grot” thick/thin sans style. Arboria has been a long-term project. Starting with the commission of a custom ‘architect’ font, this typeface has been changing over the years to its current form, which is its public debut. The source is named after the capital of planet Mongo, a futuristic city with art decó influences in their buildings. Arboria maintains that tension but is influenced by all elements of concern to his author. The result is a hybrid Grotesque with nods to the XXII century. Years ago, I developed an interest in the Japanese art of dwarfed potted trees, bonsai. I bought some books on the subject from Brooklyn Botanic Garden. In one -- Handbook on Bonsai: Special Techniques (seventh printing, February 1976) -- the type was bad. Old worn lead type, I suspect, spread wide in the tops of characters and disappearing on the bottoms. Two decades later, I came across my Brooklyn Botanic Garden collection and was struck again by this interesting type. Inspired, I made a typeface. Didn't take me long to decide on a name for it, either: a name with a double-meaning, based both on its look and its inspiration. Bonsai, the typeface, has two styles, a roman and a true italic.

Linotype Sangue is part of the Take Type Library, selected from the contestants of Linotype’s International Digital Type Design Contests of 1994 and 1997. This prize-winning font was designed by the German artist Gabriele Laubinger. The most distinguishing characteristic of Linotype Sangue is the contrast between the wide, rounded capital letters and the tall, narrow and pointed lower case. Another factor which makes this font so unique is the way Laubinger worked with stroke contrasts, using heavy strokes in the top third of the characters and diminishing to extremely light strokes at the bottom.
