The Parliament typeface was designed by Jonathan Hoefler beginning in 1995. A burlesque typeface in the Regency Blackletter style, Parliament was inspired by the ‘Four-line Pica Black No. 1’ typeface of William Caslon Jr (1821), whose enigmatic design for the letters E, G, I, N, V and Y hinted at a broader ambition to modernize the arcane shapes of the gothic alphabet’s capital letters. Parliament completes this project for the first time by including two sets of alphabets, one archaic and one modern, along with a third set of ‘small caps’ that restores to the blackletter the versatility of Roman type. Parliament was first used for the 1998 ATypI Conference in Lyon, and was published by Hoefler&Co in 2022.

First things first: I am really not a Star Trek fan. I did come up with this name, which I thought had a good ring to it. When I checked whether the name was already taken, I found out that Black Cluster is a term from Star Trek. Now you want to know what a Black Cluster is, so just check out poster 2 and read all about it. For me, Black Cluster is a handmade ink font, with a lot of jumping glyphs, a lot of diacritics and a handful of ligatures. It may be rough, but you will be pleasantly surprised by what it can do to a design! May the font be with you. Oh, no, that was from Star Wars…

There's something satisfying about tweaking to perfection a typeface based on the particular style of lettering applied to a particular kind of paper by a particular human hand. One day, in pursuit of this curious sense of satisfaction, I sat down with a porous pad of lined note paper and printed out the alphabet with a ballpoint pen. I found particularly interesting the bulbous ends of the strokes where the ink soaked in. I couldn't help myself: I drew out the rest of the character set, scanned, hand-traced, and -- as with all 3IP font designs -- manipulated every glyph to an obsessive degree. Named it Cedar Street, after a favorite address of mine. Full release has a single medium weight with a thorough character set.

ITC Portago was designed by Luis Siquot, who admits to a tendency toward unusual typefaces that can be read in text yet also work well in display settings. ITC Portago is a robust alphabet of caps and slightly smaller caps. It is a stencil face, based on the lettering on crates and luggage. Siquot says that his intention drawing Portago was to obtain a neutral, classical, very condensed grotesque stencil shape that is readable in text sizes, showing at the same time the 'movement' produced by the nicked edges. And of course the more obvious rough effect in headline sizes." At small sizes, Portago is best set with slightly looser letterspacing, as capital combinations usually do. Portago includes numerals in both full and small caps proportions.

The distinctive design of the "Diagram Display" comes from the Venn diagram. It is a common statement and it is a spatial illusion. Over the years, I've used Impact a lot. But, not because I liked it—rather because it was the only font I could find with the bulk I needed for a given title or whatever. I finally decided to make my own. It was originally built off Librum Sans Bold, but I quickly made a mask of Impact for the widths, bumped the x-height way up, made the horizontals much heavier, and on and on. You know how it is when you start designing. The result is a black sans with the bulk of Impact and much more interesting character shapes. I suspect I'll use it a lot. PF DaVinci Script Pro is based on DaVinci’s own handwriting. He is considered to be one of the greatest painters of all time and perhaps the most diversely talented person ever to have lived. This great Italian artist left us with a unique writing (used to write from right to left), which we attempted to decode and simplify with PF Da Vinci Script Pro. Many of these letters are free interpretations and do not stick to the original forms. This typeface comes in 2 different styles: Regular and a more informal style called Inked. A comprehensive and faithful rendition of Rudolf Koch’s first release, usually referred to as “Fette Deutsche Schrift” or "Koch-Schrift". In addition to the regular character set, the font includes a large number of alternates and ligatures, plus two sets of ornamental initials (Initialen mit Zierstrichen und Punkten zur Koch-Schrift, and Initialen zur halbfetten deutschen Schrift von Rudolf Koch). The main sources used during the font design process were a sample page from Hendlmeier, W. (1994), Kunstwerke der Schrift, Hannover: Bund für Deutsche Schrift und Sprache (p. 164), and several specimen sheets from the Gebrüder Klingspor Type Foundry for Koch’s “Deutsche Schrift” type family. Nono is the nickname of my oldest son, Konstantin. His little brother could not really speak yet, but he was always looking for him and said something to the tune of, "wea is a nono". From that time on I call Konstantin Nono. I designed a handwritten script with his real name, that i named Konstantin. Now I made this slick version of that script – hence – Nono! I made three basic sets of characters plus a smallcaps version. To top things off, I designed a set of endletters that I throw in for free. Everything can be mixed! Whitenights is a contemporary text family, which was developed by the prolific Swedish typographer Lars Bergquist in 2002.
