Eclectic FS Siena is a typeface with history, and not just in the sense of having its origins in classical Roman lettering. Fontsmith founder Jason Smith first committed it to tracing paper while still at college, instinctively redrawing letterforms based on Hermann Zapf’s Optima according to ‘what felt right’. When Krista Radoeva took up the challenge to edit and extend the typeface, she and Jason were determined to preserve its subtly nonconformist and eclectic spirit. Like a great dish, there are individual components throughout the character set that all add flavour, and need to be balanced in order to work together. The smooth connection of the ‘h’ ‘m’ ‘n’ and ‘r’ contrasts with the corners of the ‘b’ and ‘p’. The instantly recognisable double-storey ‘a’ – the starting point of the design – contrasts with the single-storey ‘g’ and the more cursive ‘y’. And only certain characters – ‘k’, ‘w’, ‘v’ and ‘x’ in the lowercase and ‘K’, ‘V’, ‘W’, ‘X’ and ‘Y’ in the caps – have curved strokes. Transitional FS Siena is a contrasted sans-serif typeface, blending classical elegance and modern simplicity. Its construction and proportions are descended from classical broad-nib calligraphy and humanist typefaces, with a high contrast between the thick and thin strokes. The angle of the contrast, though, is vertical, more in the character of pointed-nib calligraphy and modernist typefaces. This vertical stress helps to give FS Siena a strong, cultured presence on the page. Idiosyncratic italics The italics for FS Siena were developed by Krista to complement the roman upper and lower-case alphabets first drawn by Jason. Many of the letterforms are built differently to their roman counterparts: there’s a single-tier ‘a’, a looped ‘k’ and connections more towards the middle of stems, such as in the ‘m’, ‘n’ and ‘u’. These distinctions, along with generally much narrower forms than the roman, give the italics extra emphasis within body copy, where the two are side-by-side. In editorial, especially, the combination can be powerful. To cap it all… In his original draft of the typeface, Jason found inspiration in Roman square capitals of the kind most famously found on Trajan’s Column in Rome. In keeping with those ancient inscriptions, he intended the capitals of FS Siena to also work in all-upper-case text, in logotypes for luxury consumer brands and property developments, for example. A little added space between the upper-case letters lets the capitals maintain their poise in a caps-only setting, while still allowing them to work alongside the lower-case letterforms. The caps-only setting also triggers a feature called case punctuation, which adapts hyphens, brackets and other punctuation to complement the all-caps text.

Polias Varia is an all-caps uniwidth variable weight typeface inspired by an ancient inscription carved on a monoblock stone in hybrid characters — between no-contrast linear sans to low-contrast flared serif. The inspiring inscription is the dedication by Alexander the Great, discovered in the Temple of Athena Polias in the ancient Ionian city of Priene. Stanley Morison mentioned this inscription in one of his lectures: “The distinctive feature of this inscription consists of a consistent thickening towards the ends of perpendiculars and horizontals.” … “We have not the right to say that the serif was invented for Alexander the Great’s inscription, only that this is its first datable appearance.” In Polias Varia, the letter proportions are almost identical to the original, but the stroke features have been reinterpreted and characterized. Serif-like nodes at the end of the strokes are subtle extensions that serve to accentuate rather than break its monoline elegance. With an analogy, they are not flowers, but like blooming buds. Polias Varia is a flared sans typeface which is closer to sans-serif forms on the spectrum between sans and serif. It’s especially light looking by design to convey rather thin and white typographic color of its original monumental look. It comes in eight weights and a variable font, scaled from Thin to Bold. It is multiplexed, so the weights do not affect text lengths. Light weights are closely based on the actual carving of the inscription. Thicker weights can be used on smaller typesettings to compensate for the weight difference of larger letters’ strokes, and to keeping the monoline appearance of the entire text block intact. This method can be used for any purpose, such as setting a hierarchy between the lines or to justify their lengths. Some of the original letterforms have been preserved and stylistic alternatives such as Ionic four-bar Sigma, dotted Theta, palm Y are provided as open type feature. Some of the other ancient forms, such as the three-bar Sigma (S), the pointed U, were also added for both the Greek and Latin scripts. Polias Varia is preferable for big type settings such as logos and headlines as a modern representation of perennial classical forms. Its a fine fit for product branding, movie posters, book covers, packaging materials, and more, which require an epic look to attracting attention with a distinctive elegance. Polias Varia can be considered for distinctiveness wherever Roman Capitals work. As a noun, Polias is one of the epithets of Athena / Minerva, and in this case referring to her role as the protector of the city of Priene. In the pre-computer, pre self-adhesive label era of office supplies a number of companies (including Dennison, Maco and Denny-Reyburn) manufactured a wide variety of gummed labels for just about any use or purpose. Blank labels, specialty labels and decorative holiday seals were just a part of this line. One popular style was that of labels with parallel thick-and-thin borders of red lines and corners chamfered, rounded or straight cut. Occasionally, one could find similar labels with blue, green or gold borders but red was the mainstay, hence naming this typeface Red Border Labels JNL. Presented in this font is a collection of twenty-six standard and specialty shape label borders on the capital (A-Z keys) and twenty-six solid panel versions on the lower case (a-z) keys which can be used as backfills for the borders or as stand-alone labels.

Garuda typeface, featuring the shape and style based on "Garuda Pancasila", the state symbol of the Republic of Indonesia. Garuda is a mythical bird in the Javanese puppet stories, is very similar to the eagle. At the typeface we can find more ligatures beside than the standard. Within Garuda at least encoded 792 glyphs per weight onto major codepage: win 1252, 1250, 1254, 1257 including Mac OS Roman. It is containing more OpenType features such as swash, contextual alternate, stylistic, figures/number, and a few bit ornaments. The typeface has a pretty good readability and legibility even in small sizes. So it is useful for short texts (text length? Whom fear) for print and screen material. Usage on headlines, posters, titles, or something like that, can utilize ornament lines as a sweetener. Grrr is a headstrong modular display typeface with a large amount of alternative glyphs. It consists of eight weights ranging from Thin to Black. A variable font is also available. The typeface is designed on a modular grid and it proudly ignores the rules of optical compensations: the horizontal and vertical strokes have identical thickness, and round and triangular letters have no overshoots at all! All these peculiarities are making the typeface usable at sizes from 21pt and larger in print and approximately from 24px on non-retina screens. Grrr is especially good at extremely large sizes. The typeface includes three stylistic sets with even more bizarre letterforms. These sets activate a cyclic pseudorandom substitution of letters from a range of alternates — the letterforms keep changing as you type! The typeface was designed by Dmitry Goloub and Alexandra Korolkova and released by Paratype in 2019.

My wife name is Yasemin. After building this typeface, I wanted to honor with my wife’s name. I think I fully reflects the character I created in my mind. I created ornaments and connected glyphs. The best way to radicalize your typographic expression is to use Blackletter! Gothic calligraphy had been used throughout all historical periods without much of the principal development the Latin typefaces underwent. However, since the invention of movable type, even now its slight variations over time can be seen. Blackletters are always used where emotions are required, be it spiritual literature, romantic novels, decadent poetry or extreme music. Dracula is a typeface dedicated to classical horror. I started to draw its letters along with my illustrations for Argo publishers in spring 2017. I needed a specific typeface for book cover and chapter titles to emphasize the mysterious atmosphere of the text. Dorica is a serif font family optimized for small sizes. It is very sober and simple, with a classic appearance at first sight but the curves and details like the serifs make it very different. The name is inspired by Doric, the simplest of the three orders of organizational systems of ancient Greece. The Metalista font was created as a sign of undying admiration for the persistence of heavy metal culture. The angled font of almost fixed width proportions combines capitals with small letters for more variety and better definition of individual letters. Stressing the horizontal strokes subdued the historical Gothic character and emphasized a more modern signature, which is far different from the majority of current attempts at a modern adaptation of Fraktur fonts. We offer Metalista in three styles, or rather widths to be exact: Speed is inspired by the whiplash pace of 70s and 80s speed metal, and can tell and perform a lot even in a very small space; uncompromising Death balances on the fine line between expression and readability; and Metalista Black is the universal go-to, whether as megalomaniacal titles sprawled across the entire LP cover or as tiny texts for glam rock CD booklets.

The superfamily Pepi and Rudi is based on playful experimentation with basic geometric shapes - the circle, rectangle and triangle - elements that laid the foundations for typographic Modernism. The Pepi and Rudi introduces a number of current elements into a time-proven concept of primitively constructed typefaces. The typeface's somewhat uniform character width establishes a more regular rhythm; the character set is expanded, and legibility is improved thanks to taller lowercase. A wide range of ten styles, from hairline-thin to extra-thick with adequate Italics allow for universal use across the whole scope of graphic design. One design sparks another. As Alejandro Paul experimented with the strokes and curves of the monoline script Business Penmanship, he discovered interesting new forms and shapes that didn't fit the Spencerian theme of that typeface. These forms simmered in Ale’s subconscious over the next three years, during which time he visited New York City, pored over rare type specimen books in the New York Public Library, and explored Brooklyn’s neighborhoods. Brownstone, the face born from these explorations, is an original 21st-century design, yet one subtly infused with historical and cultural references -- keen observers might spot influences from decorative typefaces of 19th-century foundries. And just as faces from that era were influenced by contemporary architecture, the frames included with Brownstone echo the ornate iron railings of Park Slope’s row houses. (There’s also a slight 1960s vibe to Brownstone, of novelty swash-sans photocompositing faces, that can be played up at your discretion.) Influences aside, Brownstone has broad appeal to modern audiences. A soft, monoline sans-serif, with elements of Swiss geometry (see the ‘k’ and ‘x’), its marriage of highly legible, draftsman-like letterforms with decorative swashes and ornaments reflects the old-meets-new aesthetic of the DIY craft culture seen in Brooklyn and other urban centers. It’s ornamental but unfussy, romantic but understated. Brownstone includes character sets for Latin-based languages, including Western and Eastern European, Baltic, Turkish, Maltese, Celtic and Welsh. Over 1500 glyphs, including small capitals, swash characters, alternates, and ligatures, in both Light and Thin weights. Ornamental frames are also included in both weights. Evanston Alehouse is the first font in a larger collection of typefaces inspired by years leading up to the American prohibition. For the past two years I was living in Evanston, IL, a suburb of Chicago. After learning it was one of the birthplaces of the prohibition movement, I set out to learn more about it, and decided to develop a type collection that captures the dynamic era in our nation’s history. In the century that prefaced the ratification of the 18th amendment, saloons, taverns and alehouses boomed as the American working class enjoyed beer and discovered whiskey and gin. At the same time, the Temperance League was forming and gaining strength. By the turn of the century, these temperance societies were common in the culture of the country, with individual towns and states already on the move to abolish alcohol consumption. However, it was undeniable that by this time in history, America loved to drink. This font is inspired by the signage seen outside such drinking establishments. Back to the modern era, Evanston Alehouse is a 25 font family that includes 3 weights, 4 widths and 3 heights. It has special features that add depth to the font, with discretionary ligatures and stylistic alternatives. It also includes a complementary set of ornaments, including line breaks, frames, borders, and laurels. Our Binder Family is a revival and expansion of Binder-Style, a typeface designed by Joseph Binder and released by D. Stempel AG in 1959. It originally was a single weight. In later film type adaptations, a bold style, and an outline with drop shadow style were made available. However, this typeface never really had a true sense of family or larger language compatible character set. The original Binder-style typeface found revived popularity with its super condensed style when it appeared on the movie poster for "Silence of the Lambs". It was always a disappointment to me how this typestyle had never gained more traction in use.
