"LFT Etica, the moralist type family by Leftloft, began at the end of 2000, but its development is ongoing as it expands to fill the astute designer’s needs. The starting point was the common, cold grotesque sans typefaces — ubiquitous and often badly applied in their everyday visual environment. The challenge was to obtain the same force, versatility, and colour, but with a much warmer feel. LFT Etica resides aesthetically somewhere between a grotesque and a humanist sans serif, resulting from a design of soft strokes with open counters and terminals. LFT Etica successfully combines forcefulness and delicacy, wrapping both with sober charm. Milan-based Leftloft studio teamed up with Octavio Pardo to develop 24 additional styles for the very successful LFT Etica type family. Merengue Script is the second typeface designed by Panco, once again together with Ale Paul, who supervised the whole development. In this opportunity, the process of shape research and the systematization of signs led him to dive into new waters. The objective was to generate a system of signs in which the construction of such was not directly bound to traditional calligraphy, nor to texts typography. Instead, the point was to create signs inspired in “Brush pen” calligraphy but with their main features drawn or literally illustrated. The result was a font with personality, authenticity and uncommon formal aspects that make Merengue Script an interesting, highly attractive and rather unusual font. From the very beginning, the search was based on creating a font with weight and good presence in big formats, but, at the same time, efficient for brief texts of small formats. The aim was to make it usable mainly in candy, sweets and chocolate packaging. The predominance of round shapes, harmonious modulations and funny and friendly-looking visual rhythms spark a special effect in the usage of Merengue Script. Texts are enhanced with an interesting visual charm, capable of transforming a very simple text into a virtual illustration that semantically reinforces the messages in a simple way, without putting legibility at risk. With a basic set of stylistic alternatives full of frills and flounces for initials, ornamental and final letters, plus a set of disconnected signs, Merengue Script offers a wide and versatile range of options for graphic designers in the process of packaging design.

The Palatino™ typeface was first designed over 50 years ago by Hermann Zapf, and is probably the most universally admired and used of his type designs. In 1950, it was punchcut in metal by August Rosenberger at D. Stempel AG typefoundry in Frankfurt am Main, and then adapted for Linotype machine composition. Zapf optimized Palatino's design for legibility by giving it open counters and carefully weighted strokes, producing a typeface that was legible even on the inferior paper of the post-World War II period. Conversation Hearts are inspired by the sweethearts and conversation hearts that can be found all over the US and Britain, but not in Germany. A source of endless fun and surprise. As a typographer to me they are also a surprising document of written communication. Most people complain that nowadays the inscriptions are not as sweet as they used to be. While they used to held romantic and promising inscriptions like “Be True” “Sweet Talk”, today they carry “Tweet me” “Ur Hot” and “Party Girl”. So i took this as a motivation to work with conversation sweetheart on a conceptial inspirational and typographical level. The obvious: every letter pressed on the keyboard brings out a conversation heart that starts with the letter - i.e. L = Loverboy, H = Heartless but what to write? Since i didn't want to reproduce the old “Fax me” and “Email me” I had to come up with something new. Something with a personal relation and of course something that I Love - what else could i write in the shape of the heart? So I tried to access my upper subconsciousness and looked for two words for every letter in the alphabet. One for the capital letter pressed and one word for the lowercase letter. Resulting in a Kurt Schwitters worthy assemblage of vocables "Post-office" “Internship” “Zebra” “Answers” etc. It is not easy to read a text set in Conversation Hearts but easier as a text set in Zapf-Dingbats. To sparkle the visual appearance uppercase letters are filled hearts with “carved” inscription, while lowercase letters are an outlined heart with written inscription. Conversations Hearts is a part of the Light Hearted Font Collection that is inspired by a recording of Jean Baudrillard with the title, "Die Macht der Verführung" (The Power of Seduction) from 2006. Further inspiration came from the article, "The shape of the heart: I'm all yours". The heart represents sacred and secular love: a bloodless sacrifice. by British writer Louisa Young printed in EYE magazine (#43) London, 2002.

Heimat Didone is the high contrast serif typeface family within the Heimat Collection, also containing Heimat Display, Heimat Sans, Heimat Mono and Heimat Stencil. Heimat Didone is a neo-classical typeface family designed for contemporary typography, especially for use in headlines and on posters, but also for reading purposes. It combines an idiosyncratic appearance with the feeling of a grid-based letter construction of the late 20s. Since the design might be too extreme for some applications, Heimat Didone’s character set provides two alphabets, the regular one plus an alternate design that comes across as less suspenseful. Heimat Didone [872 glyphs] comes in 72 styles and contains 6 optical weights, extra sets of alternate glyphs, many ligatures, lining figures [proportionally spaced and monospaced], hanging figures [proportionally spaced and monospaced], positive and negative circled figures for upper and lower case, superior and inferior, fractions, extensive language support and many more OpenType features.

With the printing of the Futurist poem “Zang Tumb Tuuum” in 1914, modern art had taken a typographic twist: “words in freedom” (parole in libertà) were now a major part of the art world. The avant garde followed suit. Niedermann Grotesk is based on the everyday type that appeared in early modernist collages, journals and manifestos. It is a peculiar style of lettering—which was originally inspired by the Sachplakat (object poster) work of Lucian Bernhard—and adapted for hot metal in 1908 by Heinz Hoffmann. 100 years ago, the style became a workhorse of the German printing industry. Niedermann Grotesk is an updated variant, referencing the original poster art, each letter carefully drawn with an old brush. Bumpy, bold and blunt—with a suite of alternate characters and a few dingbats—Niedermann Grotesk is perfect for advertising, packaging, poetry, art, protests and retro homage.

Packing more copy in a narrow space is the main reason for using a condensed type. Characters with a more ovular shape tend to be less wide than their circular counterparts and will allow for more letters per line. In narrow columns for example, this typeface can provide up to 25% more copy than the regular typeface in the same space. Another reason is when a larger type size is called for — used sparingly it is useful for headings or headlines. For emphasis, narrower letters can provide a stark contrast in the flow of reading, creating impact while retaining typographic character. Condensed types can specially useful in tables and charts because typically both use few words in each block. If space now allows, you may think about the luxury of a larger point size. This optimizes space while keeping your typography more easily legible.

This is the digitization and considerable expansion of the cheeky and enormously popular film type Eightball, one of the most widely used faces of the 1970s and 1980s. Round and happy like a bouncy ball, these are letters after a sign maker’s own heart. Seen everywhere in its film version, from bingo and pool hall parlor signs to comic books, now this computer version opens the door for the happy roundness to be used on a much larger scale by anyone who designs layouts on a computer. The original film type included a few alternates. We included them, but we added many more as well. So make sure to check out the various OpenType features in your program while using this font. Eightball is great for a variety of applications, including signage, rubber stamps, poster design, titling, cartoons, comics, and pretty much anything where happy and round fit in.

I don’t know about the weather on your side of the globe, but here it is mighty cold! I was trying out a new technique of font-making AND I was craving a pumpkin spice latte, so I named this font Spiced Pumpkin. Pomerans is a redo of an old font of mine called Suco De Laranja. Since the original font had a citrusy name, I decided to name this reincarnation Pomerans, which means ‘Seville Orange’ in Dutch. I doubt that there are many Dutch people who actually know what a pomerans is! Pomerans is a handmade, all caps font. I kept the look and feel of the original font, but I cleaned up the glyphs, added new glyphs and added additional language support (including Vietnamese and Sami).

In Holland we eat pancakes with black syrup and I always thought that this ‘suikerstroop’ was the same as molasses. Turns out that’s not the case; syrup is made from sugar, but molasses is a by-product of the sugar refining industry. To celebrate the fact that I learned something new, I named this font family Black Molasses. Black Molasses was made using various cheap brushes and Chinese Ink. It comes in a ‘fat’ version and a ‘light’ version that work together really well.
