Prototype is a typeface with a very contemporary identity crisis—is it old or new? uppercase or lowercase? serif or sans-serif? Prototype tries to be all things to all people. There have been many attempts at creating a universal typeface, one that rationalises the alphabet and removes the inconsistencies of upper and lower case, applying an unreasonable logic to something that has grown organically ...and is already perfectly usable! Prototype was the same experiment carried out at a time when design was experiencing an identity crisis of its own—letterforms that try to be all things to all people but end up being something else entirely.

The techno sound of the 1990s, a personal computer, font creation software, and some inspiration all came together to inspire the F2F (Face2Face) font series. Alessio Leonardi and his friends had the demand to create new unusual typefaces, which would be used in the leading German techno magazine of the day, Frontpage. Even typeset as small as 6-points, in nearly undecipherable layouts, it was a pleasure for the kids to read and try to decrypt the messages. F2F Poison Flowers is a psychedelic trip back in time to the era of peace and love. Who would have ever thought that grunge or techno could be so groovy?

Geometry circle is a heading/display type, built with the intent to illustrate and attract the viewer, not to be used for long text. The inspiration comes from the Futurist movement typefaces, especially from Marinetti’s own workshop on new age typography of that time (Italy 1920). The typeface is composed of only capital letters. The letters are of an unique geometric design taking the basic 64 grid system and subtracting the shape of a circle form each glyph in a unique way to form a letter. There is a full complement of typography symbols as well as a support for Central and Eastern European symbols and characters.

The aim of the project was to create a new type family for corporate and editorial design. The resulting humanist sans serif Weitalic has strict and angular strokes, but at the same time possesses a calligraphic look – an interplay of contrasts. Thanks to the very eye-catching features the result is a distinctive typeface that looks good in both the headline and the area of body text. With its 8 weights with matching italics and numerous OpenType features Weitalic is prepared for professional and complex typographic work. The fonts have an extended character set to support Central and Eastern European as well as Western European languages.

At times, one source of inspiration can generate more than one idea. This was the case with the 1918 sheet music for the song "You're Still an Old Sweetheart of Mine". The cover displays the title in a hand lettered narrow Art Nouveau Sans serif style. A number of characters were revised and the overall font was compressed by 25% to create a whole new look and feel. The end result became Slim Nouveau JNL. This was the same material used to originally model Easy Money JNL, which is truer to the original lettering design. The font is available in both regular and oblique versions.

P22 Slogan is a non-connecting script font that captures the essence of the lettering used in 1950s European advertising. Bold strokes of this brush-drawn face make this design a great choice for both retro design and contemporary work. The font is based on the 1957 design Slogan by Aldo Novarese for the Italian Nebiolo Type Foundry. At the time of its original release, it was touted for "striking publicity work". This new digitization accurately reproduces the outlines of the original not found in previous digital versions of this design. Inside the book “New Zanerian Alphabets” (1900) by C.P. Zaner is a set of thin monoline letters and numbers along with many chamfered characters offered as alternates to the main design. This simple, but effective type style has been redrawn digitally and is now available as Apprentice Signwriter JNL in both regular and oblique versions.

Best Bet JNL is a hybrid approach in reinterpreting the classic display font Beton. Using examples of the condensed version found on old sheet music, redesigning a few additional characters and melding them with slightly condensed versions of numbers from the standard weight, Best Bet JNL offers an interesting new version to an old favorite.

A 1930s WPA (Works Progress Administration) poster advertising an exhibit of New Jersey area posters had its main lettering rendered in a very condensed hand lettered interpretation of the ever-popular Futura Black Art Deco style. This has now been re-drawn and digitized as Art Event JNL, in both regular and oblique versions.

It was our initial intention to develop a suitable lowercase for Les Usherwood's Elston typeface, based on a few characters from an old German typeface called Hermes Grotesque (Woellmer, Berlin). The new design became Creighton. Then, for good measure we decided to experiment with a 'crisper version' of this design; the result is 'Megaphone'.

As with Nocturne, Dusk til Dawn recalls the romantic, sophisticated Zeitgeist of the early 20th century, that nostalgic time "between the wars". It as a number of attractive ligatures and upper-case alternates. I have used Nocturne as a basis for Dusk til Dawn, given the font really bold down-strokes, reduced the width of some upper case characters and changed the shape of many lower case characters. Dusk til Dawn comes in two styles: Dusk til Dawn Regular, which uses the Art Deco convention of small x height, and long ascenders. This Display style is perfect for headers, posters, labels etc. Dusk til Dawn Book, which, with its higher x-height and slightly wider characters, is extremely legible and suitable for longer passages of smaller size text.

How should an authentic baudelairean type look like? Aesthetically beautiful, that’s for sure. Intellectual, neurotic. Uptight — oh, the conventions of the time. Easily readable — still 20 years to go until the age of art nouveau with its outrage of typefaces. It may have a vibe of a Paris salon - salute to the Parnassiens. Such a modern-class (don’t mix it with the modern-styled) pharmaceutical Antiqua. Contrasts, thin serifs, the integrity of the operating theatre. But Baudelaire is not Heredia. «Une charogne» is not that much a vivid metaphor as a drawing from nature. The baudelairean typeface should have its cavern, flow, dark side. Not to demonstrate the fragile romantic profile of a cursed poet, as Baudelaire was seen 130 years ago, but to express the real pain. A true, unattractive, egoistic, suicidal passion.

FINALLY! We’re telling you for The Last Time! This is not a Threat! This is not a Negotiation! Refusal to cooperate with the terms of this font will be considered an Act of War! There can be no Dispute! The Crisp, Sharp hooks and corners of this typeface are Not To Be Reasoned With! Gosh Darn it, we have grown tired of asking and this is merely a formality precedent to the outbreak of hostilities. Breathe Neue is not just an update of my renowned Breathe of 2010, this is something else... Many times I find myself looking for inspiration in my previous creations. The original Breathe has something on its essence: Something that almost 10 years later still caught my attention. Like its name suggests, letters seem to be breathing, moving, alive. Many years passed so I asked myself if there was still something I could do for it, something to get the most of that beautiful essence... Suddenly, I was already working on its curves: Many new loops, more polished, more refined. Also the proportion and spacing were altered to embellish the font. Breathe Neue’s swashes are addictive. I couldn't find another word. Irresistible? Maybe. Once you see some of its loops you want to see more. I believe this might be due to its very geometrical feel, which match well with the bodonian curves of the font. See also how well it works with Breathe Caps. And what if you combine them with Breathe Special? wow. I'm still young (yeah, sure) and I believe there're still many years ahead to enjoy this great profession, and to make many new (and astonishing, I hope) fonts. Glaciar is a script typeface based on brush handwriting and inspired by old-style bas-reliefs. All contours were carefully cleaned of brush roughness, but at the same time, minor imperfections were left to create the unique character of this font Glaciar has a built-in auto replacement for lowercase letters without connecting strokes (in the case of word ends) and for ligatures (in the case of letter pairs that do not fit well together). Isabelle is the closest thing to a metal type revival Jim Rimmer ever did. The original metal face was designed and cut in late 1930s Germany, but its propspects were cut short by the arrival of the war. This was one of Jim's favourite faces, most likely because of the refined art deco elements that reminded him of his youthful enthusiasm about everything press-related, and the face's intricately thought balance between calligraphy and typography. Not to mention one of the most beautiful italics ever made. Jim's early 2000s digitization included mathematical corrections to the original metal cut, as well as some functional improvements for digital use. In 2013, during the remastering of the entire Rimmer collection, Isabelle underwent a considerable rethinking/expansion and was rechristened Isabelle Pro. The new revisions include small caps, ligatures, seven types of figures, automatic fractions, extended Latin language support, stylistic alternates that include lowercase serif angle options in the roman and looped ascenders/descenders in the italic, and plenty of extra OpenType features like caps-to-small-caps substitution, case-sensitive positioning, ordinals, and extended class-based kerning. Now each of the Isabelle Pro fonts includes over 680 glyphs. 20% of this font's revenues will be donated to the Canada Type Scholarship Fund, supporting higher typography education in Canada.

Schorel commands the room and sets the audience at ease. This new Scotch Roman typeface from insigne is a confident personality with a tasteful amount of contrast. Cool, sharp, balanced, and contemporary, Schorel not only delivers well in longer texts, but can use its mass to meet the needs of subheadlines, callouts, and other similar projects. Scotch typefaces initially come from Scottish foundries, popular in the United States in the late 18th century. This beautiful genre of type grew in popularity through the Victorian era and most of the 20th century to make regular appearance in books, magazines, newspapers, and advertisements. Schorel itself, with its moderate contrast and organic design, features short ascenders and descenders and calligraphic italics. The design features a few ball terminals, but mostly touts its bracket serifs, which come to a sharp point. The typeface, ideal for medium to large sizes, is useful for both headlines and text, carefully created for both print and screen. This OpenType font supports most Latin-based languages. Schorel has nine weights and a true italic, and many special features such as small caps, fractions, old-style figures, and numerous extras complete each font. It’s every bit a delight to your reader’s eye.

Northstream is a Neo-Grotesque in motion. The typeface was inspired by an attempted photograph of an interesting shop sign that was interrupted by a passing truck. The resulting effect was a blur of movement and designer, Hendrik Weber, wanted to capture that feeling within the typeface. The result is a whirlwind of a design and the shadow behind the letterforms creates a very interesting effect. This typeface is meant for graphic designers to enjoy and play around with, and it is best suited for display text and large sizes such in posters and billboards. Northstream was designed as part of the Font Marathon that was run at the Monotype London office in November 2016. This version is available for free and because of the short time frame is supporting a Basic Latin character set and a few alternates.

Designed by expert ad artist Herbert Thannhaeuser for East German foundry Typoart in 1955, Lotto was until now one of the long lost gems of European sign and brush lettering faces. Unlike in Kurier (Thannhaeuser’s other brush face digitized by Canada Type as Puma), the forms’ brush construct uses a series of strokes that are mostly sudden, whimsical, and at times even look like great genius being born out of simple afterthought or straight-forward idiosyncracy. For instance, check out the simple brush pause that is the top of the f, the confident yet welcoming serifs on the T, the similarly-themed C/E and O/Q relationship, and much more. Lotto comes with over 400 glyphs, contains a few alternates and ligatures sprinkled throughout the character set, and includes support for the majority of Latin languages.

The old Norse legend of Thorben Odinson is a cautionary tale. And this typeface, like the nebulous kingdom he ruled, is something of a cloudy concoction. Thorben the typeface is something of an inspiration-hybrid, pulling aspects from multiple sources and combining them into a typeface that strangely seems to work (or not – depending on your point of view). What started as a redrawing of some old carvings (on a castle wall in deepest, darkest Suffolk), is now something entirely different. Part Nouveau curves and Celtic script, topped with a few sprinkles of modernism, darkness and some quirky ideas – Thorben absorbs it all, creating a display face that feels antiquated and current at the same time. Each style also comes pre-loaded with a handful of pictograms and icons perfect for adorning your designs with extra Thorben-ness.

Milligan is named in honor of the late Spike Milligan, a wonderful comedian who (amongst many other things) wrote and start in the Goon Show. It's a jolly, boisterous display Roman which can bring a sense of liveliness and fun to any project where it's used.
