An ad spotted in a 1964 issue of Billboard magazine with the words “STAND BACK…” introduced the first record album from then-new stand-up comedian Bill Cosby. The lettering of those two words was in a stencil sans serif design that was a perfect candidate for developing into a digital font. The end result is Advertising Stencil JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Blatt is a retro-modern font which features downtoned strokes of writing brush, a writing instrument of Korean Serif font. In the German city of Bad Neuenahr you can visit a spa called Thermal Badehaus. This beautiful art deco building has an even more beautiful art deco lettering covering its facade. I had to work with only a couple of glyphs ('Thermal Badehaus' to be exact) and tried to capture their beauty in the remaining glyphs. The result is a font called Badehaus (Bath House in German). It is a bold, all caps typeface, with some unique glyphs.

This typeface is based on one such font from a href="/foundry/atf/">American Type Founders, which was patterned after the letters of the Smith Premier No. 3. Blackminster is a Gothic font, inspired by a handwritten set of letters (designed by Harry Lawrence Gage) I found in a 1916 book about lettering. I only had the ABC/abc to work with, so I designed the remaining glyphs myself. Shababa is a hand-drawn 3-D font. The linework is fairly relaxed, mostly smooth with some distressed edges. There is lots of texturing from the pen strokes which becomes more evident at larger point sizes. This looseness enhances the smooth technicality of the properly extruded forms. With extended codepages for Cyrillic, Romanian, Turkish, Baltic & Central Europe, Shababa is suitable for multilingual environments & publications. Linotype Animalia is part of the Take Type Library, chosen from the contestants of Linotype’s International Digital Type Design Contests of 1994 and 1997. The font was designed by German artist Johannes Plass and is full of surprises. It is like a walk through the zoo, where the j is a shark chasing a small fish and the K is a moose gazing at the sky. Linotype Animalia is intended exclusively for use in headlines with large point sizes.

Cicero was the first typeface designed by Thierry Puyfoulhoux in 94. It is what could be called a semi-serif. Only the serifs which occur naturally when drawing letters with a flat nib pen have been retained. The absence of certain serifs allows for much tighter spacing. The remaining serifs still stabilize the baseline, although less effectively than a "full-serif" typeface. By borrowing features from both the sans and serif styles, Cicero truly stands at their crossroads.

Sheet music from the 1921 edition of the Ziegfeld Follies provided the blueprint for this sparkly, sprightly font. Longshanks is a condensed serif display font with a low waist, blade-like strokes, and other unusual detailing. This font features a medium-low x-height and works very well at larger display sizes. It's an excellent choice for any headline, banner, or title that would benefit from an old-world, historical, fantasy, magic, or sword & sorcery vibe. It also harks back to the metallic foil stamped type treatments from 1980s – 1990s romance novel book cover design. The offbeat features are subtle enough to leave this font with a very high degree of legibility in spite of its strong and dynamic treatment of certain serifs and finials. The namesake for this typeface is King Edward I of England, whose nickname was Edward the Longshanks.
