The main problem with handwritten fonts is the limited use in body text. ‘Skiart Serif Subtle’ is now available online. Originally inspired by the san serif font ‘Skia’ by Mathew Carter for Apple. ‘Skiart’ was designed to feel more like a serifed font, but without any serifs. It took a step between sans serif and serif fonts. Next on the path towards a serif font came Skiart Serif Mini, with tiny serifs added. This was a true serif font, all be it on the small side. Skiart Serif Subtle is less of a serif than Skiart Serif Mini, in that it doesn’t have actual 'serifs' as such. It has a subtle flare where a serif might normally be found. It remains fully readable and feels as clean and normal as any of the best body copy serifs, and yet still has the strong solid bones of all the other Skiart font families. If compared to one of the more commonly used serifs like ‘Times New Roman’, the ‘Skiart Serif Subtle’ lowercase is more open with a taller x-height, increasing its readability and friendliness. The serifs are smaller and less distracting. They are not pretending to be ligatures. Where ‘Times’ makes its p q b d forms out of a barely touching oval and stem, the ‘Serif Subtle’ forms are much more firmly attached, appearing clearly as single letters. The standard setting for the a’s and g’s are round single story, feeling warmer and more inviting in the ‘Serif Mini’ font. Much more friendly than the stuffy double-storied versions in fonts such as ‘Times’ etc.

Beckinslade is a lovely elaborate blackletter face, released just in time for Christmas, but useable at any time of the year. It is in the best traditions of Victorian Gothic revival, drawing inspiration from a range of sources and marrying them into one homogenous whole. The emphasis is on aesthetics rather than historical accuracy. Great fun though for anywhere ‘ye olde’ look is desired.

This time the font's name is meaningless. Maduki doesn't mean 'cool' in Swahili, nor does it mean 'cup cake' in Sranantongo. It is just a nice name. Maduki is a playful font, created with one of my 2 year old son's marker pens (the 'no stain, wash-out' variety), a couple of cups of coffee and a whole bunch of 'speculaas' cookies. Now you're wondering what speculaas is, right? I'll tell you later - in a couple of fonts... Anyway, there's not much meaningful to say about Maduki font. It is nice, it is cute and it comes with alternates!

In 1957, Helmut Matheis designed Charme for the Ludwig and Mayer type foundry, located in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. This informal script is of medium weight and has some variation of color. With all ego aside, Romp was designed and influenced by my daughter, Angel. For some time now, she has wanted me to design a font based on her handwriting. But each time I sit down to do it, I run into more that she needs to do and redo. On a recent attempt, I ran into the same situation again. Instead of moving on to something else, I decided to whip out a sumi brush and start making letters...for me, type design is something a little ‘serious’ and never a time to just have fun. This typeface proved that notion wrong—it really was fun. As a result, each letter encouraged another and the design grew...and grew! The happy result spawned 3 separate sets of letters & numerals (small caps and some ligatures too!). Using the beauty of OpenType, these 3 sets have been fused into one, randomly generating font set. If you are using any type of OpenType enabled application, then the Romp Pro typeface is the way to go. They include everything found in the 3 separate variants for each style as well as entirely expanding offering of additional small cap and ligature sets.

A bold but nevertheless pleasant black-letter font which was released for the first time about 1840 by the Haenel'sche Printshop and Letterfoundery in Berlin. Haenel Fraktur contains a bunch of useful ligatures, and by typing 'N', 'o' and period you get an old style number sign by activating the Ordinals feature.
