Winchell is the only identified typeface designed in Buffalo, NY prior to the formation of P22 type foundry. It was created by Edward Winchell of the Matthews-Northrup Printing Works and released by the Inland Type Foundry in 1903. The Winchell typeface was also made in Wood by the Hamilton Manufacturing company in the mid 20th Century. By the time that the 13th edition of the Speedball Text Book appeared in 1938, silent movies were a thing of the past; nonetheless, intrepid author Ross F. George included this typeface, originally intended for title cards, in the volume. The handmade title on the cover for the 1939 edition of “A Wand’ring Minstrel” [from Gilbert and Sullivan’s “The Mikado”] was rendered with a round nib lettering pen in an Art Deco style. This type design is now available as Cover Letter JNL in both regular and oblique versions. However, the font’s name is a bit of a pun, as it has nothing to do with cover letters, but rather the lettering found on the cover of the sheet music.

Applbitz is a set of three pixel style fonts which include a matching set of food related pix fonts. The regular style is a text font, which is optimal at 14 points when used in flash. Dvarlin Staves is a collection of 512 rune glyph's divided into six font family's. The three main font's are Root, Caber and Bole, while Remnant, Branch and Blossom are taller versions of the main set. They all come in four weights: Light, Regular, Semibold and Bold. Merrivale is an ideal example of the benefits of keeping ones eyes open- it was inspired by the gilt-finished raised lettering on a late Victorian shopsign in Melbourne, Australia. The family of seven faces include upper and lower case forms, small capitals, all capital forms, and flamboyant display forms. Extensive Opentype features are incorporated. All faces are offered in incised forms inspired by the original lettering as well as in solid black filled forms. Thsee typefaces are wonderful for signage where either a period air or a dignified but legible feel are required. They also lend themselves to other display uses such as posters, book covers and so forth and are ideal for the title lines of certificates.

"I digitized and to revitalize NurnbergSchwabacher by the extinct Haas'sche Schriftgiesserei, a German/Swiss foundry established in 1790 and based in Basel/Münchenstein. Many of its shares were acquired by D. Stempel in 1927. On the Luc Devroye site this foundry is listed on the Extinct Foundries of the 18th century page. This design is very similar to another Intellecta best seller: Hostetler Fette Ultfraktur Ornamental, both drawn from the classical type specimen book from Hostetler. The ornamental frame that completes the font is a fantastic baroque ornament that I found in another old book, unfortunately lost now. Luc Devroye, whose book is the source for all of my fonts, writes this about Rudolf Hostettler: He was a Swiss type designer, author of “The Printer’s Terms” designed by Jan Tschichold, of "Technical Terms of the Printing Industry" (5th edition was printed in 1995), and of "Type: eine Auswahl guter Drucktypen; 80 Alphabete klassischer und moderner Schriften" (Teufen, Ausser-Rhoden: Niggli, 1958). He also wrote "Type: A Selection of Types" (1949, fgm books, R. Hostettler, E. Kopley, H. Strehler Publ., St. Gallen and London) in which he highlights type made by European houses such as Haas, Enschedé, Deberny and Nebiolo. Jost Hochuli wrote his biography.

The original brief for Vox was a extensive monoline typeface that can be both precise and friendly, yet contain enough choice of seamlessly interchangeable variants for the user to be able to completely transform the personality of the typeface depending on the application. Conrad X. 'Cobb' Shinn (Sept. 4, 1887- Jan. 28, 1951) was a Fillmore, Indiana-born post card illustrator who sold a series of successful novelty postcard lines which included (among others) Charlie Chaplin, automobiles and the Dutch culture in the beginning years of the 20th Century. After serving in World War I, Shinn found the market for novelty postcards dwindling, and he also lent his artistic skills to cartoon features and illustrating many children's books [including his own, under the nickname 'Uncle Cobb'] which taught easy step-by-step drawing methods. Some time in the 1920s, he eventually migrated into the field of supplying electrotypes and stereotypes of 'stock cuts' of photos and line art to the printing trade. In the days of letterpress printing, this was the forerunner of paper clip art and its successor, electronic clip art. Purchasing many of his designs from 'journeyman' artists of the time, the diversity of Cobb Shinn's stock cuts library grew with the passing years, reflecting changing times, styles and topics. Some of the illustrators whose signed works were presented in Shinn's 'CUTalogs' [as he called his stock cuts catalogs] include Mary Clemmitt, Louis H. Hippe, E.C. Klinge, Nelson White, Harvey Fuller, Bess Livings, Lois Head, Harvey Peake and Van Tuyl. Upon his passing in 1951, it's not known how long the Indianapolis-based company existed before finally closing its doors. One of the more popular series of cartoons were the line illustrations of men and women affectionately called 'little big head guys' by many modern fans of these cuts because the heads of the characters were drawn somewhat larger than the rest of their bodies. Shinn Kickers JNL is a collection twenty-six of these illustrations, and just like a kick in the shin (as the pun in the name implies), these charming cartoons get your attention.

As a family, we love to go camping. We have a big Norwegian tunnel tent (4 season - with room for a wood stove), some really warm down sleeping bags and a primitive field kitchen. Even though our camping trips are usually devoid of luxury, the kids love them! We always choose campsites that are close to nature, like a national park or in the mountains. A couple of years ago, we toured the southern part of England and one of our camping stops was in Exmoor National Park. Minehead is a small coastal town, not far from where we camped, so I named this font after a fond memory! Minehead is a handmade display font. It was loosely based on Haettenschweiler. Use it for your packaging, your tourist information leaflets and your book covers. And do visit Minehead one day!

This font is inspired by the samples of the booklet "Caligrafía inglesa" published in Madrid in the late nineteenth century by the spanish calligrapher Vicente Fernández Valliciergo. Hundred of new glyphs have been added, taking advantage of Opentype features. Ligatures, decorative figures, initials and final forms, inspired in the samples of English Calligraphy as shown in "The universal penman" by George Bickham have been added to the font. The result is Valliciergo, a font with more than 1000 glyphs, meant to be a useful tool to simulate the master strokes of the great calligraphers.

Orgovan is based on calligraphic script models lettered with a flat brush, which have been a mainstay in the sign makers' and display artists' handbooks since the beginning of the 1960s. Careful adjustments to the construction of the character shapes made the glyphs more open. This ensures that the face is well legible in small sizes, making it suitable for more demanding typographic applications. The Punk and Rounded variations of the base model offer an even broader range of possible applications, while the Fat Cap, Flower Power and Hairy cuts are contemporary decorative alternatives.

The inspiration for this font (as well as the name!) comes from a London cafe I visited years ago. I was fascinated with the handwritten menu - irregular and awkward, yet refreshingly charming. I did my best to recall that particular look by adding 4 slightly different versions of each lowercase letter. The name of the font comes from the speed of the waiter...or the lack of it! But luckily he took his time, otherwise I wouldn't have had the time to really look at the handwritten menu! :)

ITC Verkehr was designed by Mott Jordan, who based its forms on those of narrow sans serif typefaces but also chose a departure from the tradition to set the font apart from the rest. The upper half of each character is heavier than the lower half, although this is usually the other way around. Diagonal strokes, like the horizontal of the lower case e, relax the otherwise regular, bar-like look of the font. ITC Verkehr is suited exclusively for use in headlines and display in larger point sizes.

Somewhat extravagant and yet quite useful? Yes, absolutely. Meet Salted family: two awesome styles and a way cool picture font. Messenger is a redux of two mid-1970s Markus Low designs: Markus Roman, an upright calligraphic face, and Ingrid, a popular typositor-era script. Through the original film faces were a couple of years apart and carried different names, they essentially had the same kind of Roman/Italic relationship two members of the same typeface family would have. The forms of both faces were reworked and updated to fit in the Ingrid mold, which is the truer-to-calligraphy one.
