The cover lettering of a 1940s issue of a romance comic spotted in an auction online was the inspiration for Monthly Adventures JNL. A backstory with a different name Years ago, I was commissioned to take my Lust typeface and produce something unique to use for large format graphics for an event…cool. It needed to be hyper-contrast with a lot of over-the-top details. With a tight turnaround, I looked for primers within my development catalogue to help me, and settled on some early work on a typeface I had drawn called Hedonist. I used those sketches and its conventions to retrofit and build out Lust Hedonist (only to see the project go bust on the client’s end). I intended to go back shortly after the Lust Hedonist release to finalize a retail version of the OG Hedonist, but I never could settle on the look of the 'g' or the numerals, got distracted with other projects, and never picked it back up… until last year. After randomly doodling a fat, flat ‘g’ with an extremely tilted counter axis, I knew immediately how it could be used and that (re)set things in motion. Only problem was, in the process of refining the letterforms I began truly dissecting the pieces, rediscovering all of the recklessness within Hedonist, and decided on fundamentally rewriting the approach to the typeface… literally flaying it to the bone. I’m much, much happier with this finished typeface now, but the name no longer fit the moniker given to the first, adolescent approach—there’s far more audacity and cleverness in these letterforms, tenacious in their resolution now. As a result, the name Courage fit the mettle of this typeface so much more, so I kept it.

When Social Gothic first launched in 2007 as a basic single font, it became an instant branding and advertising favourite. It was used widely by a few major fashion outlets and department stores, then soared to new heights of exposure when it became the billboard-cause standard face for a few charity outfits and political organizations throughout Canada’s major urban centres. I regard Sabio as an evolutionary face. By this I mean that it merges elements of script and Roman design into one elegant whole. The design was 'evolved' somewhere between these two classic approaches. The resulting family of faces makes an excellent display family, but is also clear and legible at small sizes and can be used as a text face with a distinctive flair. Sabio is a wonderfully flexible face that can sit happily alongside artwork that owes its inspiration to any era from the Art Deco onwards. The regular form is gently and subtly oblique, and the glyphs have a slight hint of swash about them. Alternate and perpendicular forms are also offered. The regular, alternate and perpendicular forms are all in turn offered in regular, and bold weights as well as in a condensed form. All in all Sabio is a humanist face with which almost anything can be done offering flair and elegance for almost any project. In a vintage photograph, promotional signage outside an old theater for the 1929 early sound film “The Doctor’s Secret” had lettering in a wide, bold Art Nouveau slab serif design. This was the model for Talking Picture JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Eduardo Manso has brought new meaning to the word distressed. The contours of Rina have been randomly inverted, spiked and split to create this agitated look. Surprisingly, Rina remains legible. And just to turn the screw a little more, Manso created an outline version, Rina Linea.

Designed by Jakob Erbar and released in 1930, Koloss is a headline face that works well for posters. Characters have been drawn with a broad nib leaving small counters. This gives the effect of a compressed face, although the width of the strokes imply a fat face.

Sweet Titling No. 22 is part of the Sweet Collection of engraved lettering styles from the 20th Century, published by MVB Fonts. This obscure, art deco design would have been used for engraved letterhead, business cards, etc., and likely first appeared in the 1920s or ’30s.

The 1957 French publication “La Letra Dans La Peinture et la Publicite” (“The Letter tn the Painting and Advertising”) had an illustration of split-serif letters and numbers with a decidedly Western feel. This is now available as Horse Thief JNL in both regular and oblique versions.

Inventory JNL is based on a "solid letter" stencil where you trace the body of the letter and fill in the top and bottom connecting lines to each character. This is another font in Jeff Levine's series of digital designs based on classic lettering stencil guides.

shibby adj (etc.). Used to indicate that something is “cool.” Apparently Shibby was first used in the 1999 movie Dude, Where’s My Car? I don’t think Shibby is THE cool word of the moment, but I think it is cool enough for this rather shibby font!

OK Corral is a revival of a very old Italian font that you may have seen in the past under the original name of Italian Print. The Lined version of this font has never been known to have a lower case set of letters until now.
