Chonky is a bold script font based on English calligraphy but with touches of the vitality that the commercial lettering of 1950s had, and it is mostly inspired in the work of the master Doyald Young and his lessons. Its rounded terminals, friendly look and heavy weight make Chonky a perfect option for advertising, packaging and visual identities. In the Regular font, the ascenders, descenders and capitals are the shorter they could be; while in Poster, they are larger, in order to achieve more graceful forms. A precursor to Art Deco headline/display sans serif typefaces with thick and thin strokes is the Matthews Series (circa 1902). It was manufactured and sold through the Inland Type Foundry of St. Louis, MO. Digitally redrawn as Merchant Trade JNL, it’s now available in both regular and oblique versions.

A vintage rubber stamp alphabet and star printing set had a package header with Art Deco-inspired lettering describing the product. Sold by a company called Elvin [circa late 50's-early 1960s], these Japanese-made sets were one of many distributed by independent toy importers and made in various configurations including [at times] tiny animal stamps. The type design on this particular item was the model for Retro Packaging JNL, available in both regular and oblique versions.

A. R. Bosco made Romany for ATF in 1934, when there was much demand for script types in advertising and publishing. It was the high times of Speedball lettering, and a casual script in that fashion was naturally very welcome. It became an instant hit and was used widely for a good part of the 1930s and 1940s. Apricot is not only a revival of Bosco's work, but also a major expansion of it. It contains very effective solutions to the many problems presented by the original metal type, which had to always be tracked too wide because of the forms of some of its letters. Solving these problems was not an easy task. A comprehensive set of alternates was designed to give the user the ability to replace some forms in certain uses, and a large set of two-, three-, and even four-letter ligatures was added to solve the awkwardness of some of the more common letter pairings. The resulting work is quite delightful, especially for those who like to take advantage of OpenType technology. Apricot is the rarest kind of script in digital type these days, the kind that is upright, round, bold, feminine, and distinctly young in appearance. A birthday cake for a teenage girl can certainly benefit from these letters. So can greeting cards, family show posters, diary covers, party invitations, women's shirts, toy packaging, celebration literature, and almost anything that needs that special touch of shiny happy youth. Apricot is available in all common font formats. The Postscript and True Type versions come in 4 fonts, which include one for alternates and two for ligatures alongside the main font. The OpenType version is one font that contains more than 380 glyphs and all the necessary programming for the palettes of OpenType-supporting applications. Now here's a font with an unusual backstory. You may recall that a while ago we discovered that Tim Burton was using an outdated version of one of our fonts for the interior titles in his The Corpse Bride. Well, our quest to get hold of him didn't bear any immediate fruit, but in a totally unrelated event we were contacted by the graphic arts company working with the overseas distributors for The Corpse Bride and it turned out that they needed a font based on the main title of the movie so they could keep the same style when they retitled it into other languages. The original title was either hand lettered or a heavily modified font, bearing some resemblance to our Ligeia and Tuscarora fonts, so we had to create a whole font more or less from scratch and extrapolate most of the letters from the very limited sample in the original title by identifying certain consistent characteristics and building new characters around them. It was a lot of work, but the good news is that they didn't want exclusivity, so we've got the font to add to our collection. We ended up calling it Beynkales which means 'Bone Bride' in Yiddish, which makes sense given the context of the movie. So here it is, in all its tattered glory, and bound to end up in our Halloween font selection later this year as well. Beynkales Alternate is a companion font that includes a full set of alternative upper and lower case characters which can be used on their own or in combination with the characters from Beynkales to create a more varied and handwritten look.

XRoomingHouse is a typeface of pictures that I did many years ago. Most of the pictures are border elements, and within a set they can be combined to make borders or frames. There is no real style consistency in the font—it is an eclectic collection of elements. (Minor corrections and additions were made in 2018 to improve sets that can form frames. For a more ambitious attempt at a font that can form frames, see Framealot). As for the name, boarders stay in a rooming house.

Impacting and vibrant, Cordelia family draws inspiration from covers of 'cordel literature’, small booklets of popular story-poems that played an essential role on the folk-popular cultural life of Brazil.  Printed in coarse paper, usually with an woodcut illustration and lettering in the front, these booklets were sold on the streets, in marketplaces and town squares, hung in a cord - therefore the name ‘cordel’. The work of these humble printers and poet-singers of northeastern Brazil strongly served as source for acclaimed romances and movies and still inspires writers of all genres, movie makers, painters,​ musicians. And type designers too :) Cordelia doesn’t bring a picture font yet, but ​it ​goes pretty well with Chronic and Manicuore illustrations. It goes well with and without them. It definitely goes well. The rounded forms found in Chennai have proven to be one of insigne's more popular designs for web-based company logotypes. Bigfoot is the fattest font ever made. It began as a simple exercise given to students in a design course: Most people don't appreciate type because they don't really know what it actually is. One way to understand it is looking at it like a combination of sculptures that have to work together to achieve a certain harmony, where each letter form is one of those sculptures. Most people understand and appreciate that a sculpture starts from a rock of an incomprehensible form, which is manipulated by someone into becoming the recognizable or abstract work of art it eventually is. Consider type design a kind of two-dimensional sculpting. You have a rectangle. Take away as a little as possible from it until it is recognizable as the letter A. Repeat to get the letter B, and so on. After all 26 minimal letters are made, do they actually function as an alphabet to build words and sentences that are recognizable to the human eye? This exercise can trigger thoughts and theories about the overall subjective nature of identifying abstract yet somewhat familiar shapes. It can go into the psyche of art in general. But one thing for certain, this exercise has so far helped a few people find a new appreciation for finely crafted typefaces. If you are a design educator, your students' typographical perspective and arguments would benefit from it. And if you are a designer, well, fat faces are all the rage these days, and this is as fat as it can get. Please note that that this typeface, due to its minimalistic nature, does not include accented characters. It does however support the full C0 Controls and Basic Latin Unicode set. "A capital titling face with numerals, erroneously labelled in Figgins specimen book of 1817 as an 'antique' or roman. With a very bold, nearly monoline construction and squared serifs as thick as the main stroke, this type surpassed even the fat face style in blackness, it was popularised by the advent of handbills and early advertising posters, which needed bold type styles to project commercial messages from a distance. A sign-writer friend of mine theorises that the Egyptian style originated with the North African campaigns (hence Egyptian) of Napoleon Bonaparte, and the type historian Ruari McLean also suggests that the Egyptian style originated with signwriters 'block' letters, just like the prototypical (and contemporary) sans serif of Caslon IV."
