This font family is display stencil sans-serif with different stylistic layers available as open type font. The main characters are geometric and neutral but when we change the contextual alternates open type feature the letterforms activate the cursive stylish set. There were several motivations for this font. It was a font in my style, a left-handed designer. But also, I wanted a script designed to work with ePUBs. This means fancy bullets in place of some of the ASCII characters—since ePUB readers do not support OpenType at all. Basically, I just had fun with it. The heifer for the mu figure cracks me up. What can I say?

Since the 2006 launch of Rennie Mackintosh Glasgow, the world’s first lowercase Mackintosh-style typeface, designer George R. Grant has been pleased with its acceptance by Mackintosh lovers around the world. In fact, “Glasgow” has proved to be as popular as the original “founding” font, the classic Charles Rennie Mackintosh Font. By modifying many of these letterforms, and giving a more “freehand” shaping, George has developed this latest offering. The font has irregular “serifs” at the extremities of each stem - a suggestion of being handwritten. The name “Allan Glens” comes from the high school Mackintosh attended which, coincidentally, George did too. Says George, “As the school no longer exists, I wanted a way to perpetuate the Allan Glen’s name in type. At the end of the 1931 gangster film “The Public Enemy” a hand lettered card offers up an afterword on the demise of Tom Powers (James Cagney’s character in the film) and how a “public enemy” is neither a man nor a character but a problem society must deal with. The text is in an Art-Deco influenced sans serif, and has been digitally recreated as Afterword JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

What can I say? I like fonts with stars. Space Time is a hand drawn font with a lot of variety. I started designing the regular version with the characters slightly touching but it wasn't quite what I had in my head. I’d imagined tightly spaced letters with overlapping shadows and the only way to get that effect was to create a second version with stackable layers. That means this download includes regular, base, outline, shadow, and stars files. Plus, the base and outline can be used for stacking or work fine as standalone fonts. This font is all caps but the lowercase letters feature alternative styles.

FangsALot is a bizarre typeface family that was designed to alternate two character sets. These sets are alternated automatically in applications that support the OpenType feature Contextual Alternatives (calt). The template used to design characters is a distorted triangle that resembles a curved tooth or a fang. This shape can be flipped horizontally, vertically, and both horizontally and vertically to give four orientations. Two of these orientations are used in the regular style and two in what is called the italic style. I thought the fang motif did not come through clearly in the regular and italic styles. Rather the impression they give is more like graffiti lettering. To emphasize the fang motif I added two more members to the family by filling fang outlines with unadorned sans-serif characters. Then to allow more color in lettering, I added two more styles with letters on black. I then had six styles based on triangles skewed left and right. Why not fill the family out with three more styles based on an isosceles triangle? The end result is a family of nine. All members of the family are monospaced and are hard to read. The three graffiti-like styles have some alternative letters that can be accessed with the OpenType feature Stylistic Sets. Also, for each style it is possible to use only one set of characters by adding a space after each letter and then adjusting the character spacing. The graffiti-like styles can be useful in situations where the hard-to-read property is not important but where a menacing and vicious touch is needed, such as topics of sharks, teeth, biting, and vampires.

Italian type design master Aldo Novarese was not famous for making calligraphic designs, nor had he any interest in them. He is much better known for his text faces, and quite innovative sans serif and decorative designs which became the definition of what we now know as techno and modern. But in 1968, Novarese surprised everyone with a fantastic flowing deco script entitled Elite. Novarese's formula of simple soft curves and toned-down swashes makes for one of the most unique alphabets ever seen, not to mention one of the best flowing and most legible scripts. This is now its digital incarnation, named Fontella. Fontella's applications are virtually limitless. This is the sort of script that can feel at home pretty much anywhere; a sign, a fridge magnet, a bumper sticker, a greeting card, a movie poster, a book cover, music artwork, magazine ads, newsletter headlines, etc. Digitized from original specimen and expanded with a few built-in alternates and ligatures by Rebecca Alaccari, the font was named after the famed jazz singer Fontella Bass. These letters are just so sweet they had to be called Fontella.

Linotype Gotharda is part of the Take Type Library, chosen from contestants of Linotype’s International Digital Type Design Contests of 1994 and 1997. This display font started as an experiment of the Croatian-German designer Milo Dominik Ivir. He wanted to design a font with characteristics of both sans serif and Gothic faces. From the Gothic he took the heavy strokes, the narrow letters, the exaggerated overmatter and the high x-height. The modern standard forms of the letters s, a, x and z, the clear capitals and the lack of serifs are the characteristics taken from sans serif faces. The result is a font with a constructed, old German feel. Linotype Gotharda is intended exclusivley for headlines in large point sizes.

KAPITAL is an elegant, geometric uppercase sans. It is available in standard and stencil style across four weights – light | regular | medium | demi – covering 346 glyphs. It is based on the capital character set from a previous release – Basik. Continuing the clean, geometric aesthetics, KAPITAL was refined further to create a more minimal style. This enabled the characters to discreetly perform their role – to simply convey the message of the writer without distraction. To achieve this, special attention was applied to the form consistency of the glyphs across the weights and negative space throughout. In many typefaces as the weight is increased the form and style can deviate significantly from the original design. With regards to negative space – although inevitable – wherever possible key letterforms were adjusted to alleviate this.

The Brushability is a brush-written font family that contains 9 fonts, all united by a brushy look. All fonts compliment each other perfectly and can be used either together or with many other brush-looking fonts on the market. The script contains a lot of alternates, swashes, ligatures, arrows etc. while the Extras font has quite a few design elements with the same brush look - such as arrows, frames and swashes - to add more personality to the design. The 5 sans serif fonts (ranging from Light to Black) also contain alternate glyphs for certain letters - just to make your design process even more fun. Buddy Slender is the narrower version of the companion sans for Contenu, the book font family designed for a book on book family design called Practical Font Design. It's a loose, free, easy to read sans, so when my wife suggested Buddy, it clicked. This is the 2-font Buddy Slender family of Regular & Bold. I made a new more limited feature set for these fonts due to their designed usage.
