Josef Týfa first published the Academia typeface in 1967-68. It was the winning design from competition aimed at new typeface for scientific texts, announced by Grafotechna. It was cut and cast in metal in 1968 in 8 and 10 point sizes of plain, italic and semi-bold designs. In 2003 Josef Týfa with František Štorm began to work on its digital version. During 2004 Týfa approved certain differences from the original drawings in order to bring more original and timeless feeling to this successful typeface. Vertical stem outlines are no more straight, but softly slendered in the middle, italics were quietened, uppercase proportions brought closer to antique principle. Light and Black designs served (as usual) as starting points for interpolation of remainig weights. The new name Academica distinguishes the present digital transcription from the original idea. It comprises Týfa’s rational concept for scientific application with versatility to other genres of literature.

In Holland we eat pancakes with black syrup and I always thought that this ‘suikerstroop’ was the same as molasses. Turns out that’s not the case; syrup is made from sugar, but molasses is a by-product of the sugar refining industry. To celebrate the fact that I learned something new, I named this font family Black Molasses. Black Molasses was made using various cheap brushes and Chinese Ink. It comes in a ‘fat’ version and a ‘light’ version that work together really well.

Conestoga was a challenge that I took on which was to take a logo from an old antique vegetable crate label and create a complete font based on its design. The original logo was curved on a path and was caps only. The new letters were drawn straight and a matching lowercase was created to turn this old custom logo into a working font.

Dante was designed by Giovanni Mardersteig. Mardersteig started work on Dante after the Second World War when printing at the Officina Bodoni returned to full production. He drew on his experience of using Monotype Bembo and Centaur to design a new book face with an italic which worked harmoniously with the roman. Originally hand-cut by Charles Malin, Dante was adapted for mechanical composition by Monotype in 1957. The new digital font version has been re drawn, by Monotype's Ron Carpenter, free from any restrictions imposed by hot metal technology. This is not Hollywood. You may be surprised but I am not inspired by the famous Hollywood sign for this type but a grid on a roof of Barcelona. I walked down the street observing the architecture of buildings in the area of the Marina when I saw a grid on a roof. One of the workers put a board on them and the magic happen. If there was an American Typeface Hall of Fame, Bank Gothic, designed by the great Morris Fuller Benton would hold a place of special distinction considering this design has survived so many trends in typographic fashion since being introduced in 1930. It's just as desirable today as it was over eighty years ago; arguably more. Today, Bank Gothic is a very popular choice as a titling face for science fiction books, posters and countless television and movie titles. The original sheet music for Ted (Is Everybody Happy?) Lewis’ signature tune, When My Baby Smiles at Me, inspired this whimsical wonder. The sheet music was discovered in the Library of Congress American Memory Collection, an incredible online resource. The typeface gets its name from a slightly loony early 1900s comic strip by Fontaine Fox. This new and improved version has beefed-up outlines, so it renders well even at smaller sizes. Both versions contain the complete Unicode 1252 (Latin) and Unicode 1250 (Central European) character sets, with localization for Romanian and Moldovan.

Some time ago I bought my smallest book ever: Kate Greenaway’s Alphabet* 57 x 72 mm. I thought it was the sweetest little book I had ever seen. Not knowing about the fame of the designer Kate Greenaway (1846-1901), I put it in some dark drawer and looked at it from time to time. Kate’s books were all outstanding successes in English publishing history; she was an icon of the Victorian era. Some of those books are still being reprinted today. This little gem I had accidentally acquired has become very rare and I have not found any reprints yet. So I thought maybe I could adapt her drawings for use on today’s computers. I ventured to redraw her delicate illustrations, blowing them up 300 percent, being forced to simplify them without losing her touch. It took quite some time! While redrawing them, I discovered that she most certainly drew them in at least three different sessions as well. Then I scanned my drawings and put them in a font. To make the font more usable, I added the ten numerals in Kate’s style; the original does not have those. I hope she would have liked my adaptations. Olde Nouveau JNL is an interesting Art Nouveau typeface based on lettering found on some vintage sheet music. It's name is a contradictory pun, since "Nouveau" means new in French, and Olde (spelled in the archaic form) is the total opposite of what the Art Nouveau movement embodied.
