The design is a tribute to the historic stone cast type in the building façades of the former Woodford, Bourne & Co. in Cork City, Ireland. For many years I had admired the type’s simplicity and strength, so I decided to faithfully reproduce those letters and expand them to a fully working font with 500 glyphs per case. A key feature of Woodford Bourne is the ability to change the feel of your typography with just one click. Virginia has a proven track-record. Unashamedly geometric, starkly simple with a touch of art deco/bauhaus/rococo about her, she was the most popular headline face around, at least in my home town in the year of her release circa 1970. That was the year my five-weight design won the inaugural (and only) Lettergraphics International Alphabet design competition and shut out 5000 competitors. Alas, Lettergraphics ceased to trade from its LA studios after the mid-80s and Virginia's two-inch film fonts were left to collect dust on the cutting room floor. Until my recent decision to revive her along with some subtle tweaking, a few additional glyphs and Opentype features, supported by an abundance of kern pairs making Virginia suitable for text or the largest display type.

Between the most rigid geometric letterforms and the most expressive calligraphy works there are, undoubtedly, countless combinatory possibilities. Ingeo is just one of them. Located very close to a geometric approach it shows, however, a clear willingness to accommodate in its structure the calligraphic traits of our alphabet. In Ingeo geometry grows from the inside, meaning that all its counters are based on geometric shapes. Around them, contours are later defined. The solid mass resulting from that interaction is modulated in specific areas in a way that evokes the way a writing hand finishes a letter and starts the following one. Ingeo seeks to accommodate calligraphic features in its geometric structure without any complexes, in the same way a computer engineer writes a song or a poet admires the orbits of planets and satellites. In this vast and unmapped realm between seemingly opposing concepts is where Ingeo finds its playground. This family was created inspired from two French (one so common and a very rare large one) "toy print" boxes, named Le petit imprimeur, with rubber stamp characters from the 1920's. The big difference from our 1920 My Toy print is that this font is complete, with upper and lower cases, accented, complete punctuation and some symbols. The doubly of each usual character in each style (A-Z/a-z and numerals) allow to give a rich and variously uneven appearance, looking like the results of the real use of those old rubber stamps, with bad kernings and alignement. The font is containing West (including Celtic), Central, East European, Turkish and Cyrillic characters. The bold style may be used as a reinforcement, mixed with normal style without disadvantage, allowing finally four choices for each usual letter... The original size is 6mm (about 17 pts).

The award-winning Conrad was created by Japanese type designer Akira Kobayashi. Its design was based on the fifteenth-century type by Conrad Sweynheym and Arnold Pannartz, two German printers active in Rome at that time. They produced a unique, slightly unbalanced yet attractive type. Kobayashi says of his typeface, “I have designed a couple of typefaces inspired from the past, but this time the original print acted merely as a reference. The distinctive lowercase ‘a’ and some other letters were inspired by Sweynheym and Pannartz’s second roman type, but I revived the type in a more informal way. Here I used the historical type as a springboard. The resulting type looks different, taking on a rather temporary and lively look. I assume that the Conrad is the first revival of the Sweynheym and Pannartz type, though it does not closely resemble the original.” Conrad won first prize for the text typeface category in Linotype’s Third International Typeface Design Contest (2000) as well as the Certificate of Excellence in Type Design from the Type Directors Club (2001).

The Englishman William Caslon punchcut many roman, italic, and non-Latin typefaces from 1720 until his death in 1766. At that time most types were being imported to England from Dutch sources, so Caslon was influenced by the characteristics of Dutch types. He did, however, achieve a level of craft that enabled his recognition as the first great English punchcutter. Caslon's roman became so popular that it was known as the script of kings, although on the other side of the political spectrum (and the ocean), the Americans used it for their Declaration of Independence in 1776. The original Caslon specimen sheets and punches have long provided a fertile source for the range of types bearing his name. Identifying characteristics of most Caslons include a cap A with a scooped-out apex; a cap C with two full serifs; and in the italic, a swashed lowercase v and w. Caslon's types have achieved legendary status among printers and typographers, and are considered safe, solid, and dependable. A few of the many interpretations from the early twentieth century were true to the source, as well as strong enough to last into the digital era. Caslon Black was designed by Dave Farey in the ITC library.
