Mayville JNL is a re-drawing of an all-caps Clarendon Wood Type font from the 1800s.

It’s a mixture of digital exactness and analog freedom. With over 130 Opentype features, the font can change its look from strict to charming twirly. GELI offers many different ways to highlight words, which gives the font a personal character. It is a powerfull corporate font with a wide range to play with. Tobias Gutmann designed the Font in 2009/10 in the Typoclub which is part of the Hochschule der Künste Bern.

Freude was originally developed for the album artwork of the Austrian musician Tombeck. The word Freude means “joy” in German. Supplemented by the addition of lowercase letters and refined by various OpenType features, the Freude typeface is charmingly playful. Created for everything fun, its design is relaxed and amiable – perfect for mama’s boys, chocolate freaks and pranksters alike. Thanks to its balanced letterforms, Freude is equally entertaining in both large and small sizes.

Most of the lettering on a piece of sheet music for a song from the 1921 George M. Cohan musical comedy entitled “The O’Brien Girl” was hand lettered in a playful, casual Art Nouveau design with rounded ends. The characters on that page took on a look reminiscent of cartoon or comic strip wording, and the result is a digital typeface named Cartoon Nouveau JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

“LAPOYA” (meaning in english “the coolest”) is a large slab serif typeface family, with a certain Italian inverted contrast touch. Specially designed for advertising big shows and commerces, Lapoya has 36 variables and four axes, including a text and decorative versions, where the drawing and width of its counterforms vary. It also has icons that remember the old aesthetics of wood types from the early 20th century, and more than 400 characters with a multitude of signs and ligatures, that make Lapoya ideal for up to 89 languages. It is clearly inspired by the large wood types designed for posters, advertisements and newspapers. Since they were introduced in the 19th century, slab serifs have become extremely popular. In fact, serifs are often enlarged, not so much to look like beautiful or balanced letters, but to be more graphic and visual powerful than others. Kisik is a handwritten font. I got a request to put my handwriting into a font, so I decided to take the challenge and design a whole typeface with three different weights (light, regular, bold) and 638 glyphs to cover all 104 Latin languages. The Adinkra alphabet is a way to write some of the languages spoken in Ghana and Ivory Coast, such as Akan, Dagbani, Ewe and Ga. It is a simplified version of the Adinkra symbols, and was introduced in 2015 by Charles M. Korankye, who has written a number of books about it. According to tradition, the Adinkra symbols were created by Nana Kwadwo Agyemang Adinkra, the King Gyaman people in the Ashanti region of Ghana from 1810 to 1820. Or they were created by Gyaman people, and the king liked them so much that he wore them on his clothes and named that after himself. The Adinkra symbols are used as decoration, logos, arts, sculpture, pottery and so on. The symbols represent sayings, proverbs or concepts, such as wisdom, authority, strength, unity, love adaptability, wealth, peace, war or agreement. Since Unicode codes have not been assigned yet, it is designed on a latin-based font. Please contact me if you want changes to the keyboard layout.

Ten years or so after his unique treatment of Garalde design with Trump Mediaeval, Georg Trump took on the transitional genre with Mauritius, which was to be his last typeface. He started working on it in 1965. The Stuttgart-based Weber foundry published a pamphlet previewing it under the name Barock-Antiqua in 1967, then announced the availability of the metal types (a roman, a bold and an italic) a year later. The global printing industry was already in third gear with cold type technology, so there weren't that many takers, and Weber closed its doors after more than 140 years in business. Subsequently, Trump’s swan song was unfairly overlooked by typography historians and practitioners. It never made it to film technology or scalable fonts. Thus, one of the most original text faces ever made, done by one of the most influential German type designers of the 20th century, was buried under decades of multiple technology shifts and fading records. The metal cuts of Mauritius seem to have been rushed in Weber’s desperation to stay afloat. So the only impressions left of the metal type, the sole records remaining of this design, show substantial problems. Some can be attributed to technological limitations, but some issues in colour, precision and fitting are also quite apparent, particularly in Mauritius Kursiv, the italic metal cut. This digital version is the result of obsessing over a great designer’s final type design effort, and trying to understand the reasons behind its vanishing from typography’s collective mind. While that understanding remains for the most part elusive, the creative and technical work done on these fonts produced very concrete results. All the apparent issues in the metal types were resolved, the design was expanded into a larger family of three weights and two widths, and plenty of 21st century bells and whistles were added. An open-hearted humanist sans-serif. Playful and friendly. Faible is everybody’s darling. You cannot not like this good-natured humanist typeface. Morning Paper JNL is part of a small series of fonts re-drawn from screen captures of original vintage newspaper headlines. The typefaces are classic wood and metal faces that were popular in all forms of print of the time. This sans is a companion to Final Edition JNL and Evening Paper JNL.
