The inspiration source for MFC Phonograph Monogram is a vintage monogram specimen named “Kent” showing only a CBA sample. It was a style I could find no other reference for, but was desperate to recreate this record like styling of monogram. Finally, it all comes to life in MFC Phonograph Monogram. I even threw in a little dog and phonograph icons hidden in the font as decorative icons reminicent of old Victrola records. Phonograph Monogram supports two and three letter monograms, although the two letter style break from the circular record design and creates a zulu style shield design. MFC Phonograph Monogram uses the Ligatures feature, available in most OpenType savvy applications, such as Adobe Illustrator CS (see Fig. 1). The Ligatures feature is typically enabled automatically, but you may need to confirm this in your program if you are not certain. If any second lowercase letter typed does not automatically switch to form the right side of the rounded form, you do not have Ligatures enabled.

The Gadabuursi alphabet, also known as the Borama alphabet Borama is an alphabetic script for the Somali language. It was devised around 1933 by Sheikh Abdurahman Sheikh Nuur of the Gadabuursi clan. Though not as widely known as Osmanya, the other major orthography for transcribing Somali, Borama has produced a notable body of literature mainly consisting of qasidas.

Based on the popular Talbot Type Kamerik 105 , this Cyrillic variation is now available for the first time. Basis is a bitmap font family which is happy being used at both small and large sizes. Designed as a 9 point bitmap face for the web, it offers different styles than most normal bitmaps. Punto Poly is the layered type system of Punto for cromatic typesetting. Endless effects can be created by 11 stackable layers and different colors. The dots of Punto Poly are not made up of grid-based dots, they are optical corrected and there is always the same distance between the dots, with the aim to create more harmonic letterforms. The dots also vary gradually in size to reflect the thickening and thinning of strokes, giving the letterforms a sophisticated overall look. Punto Poly comes up with 11 layer system and is perfectly suited for logos, posters, brands and magazines. The language support includes Western, Central and Eastern European character sets, as well as Baltic and Turkish languages.

In the last years our society has change a lot. Nowadays cities and countries are no longer static territories with well-drawn borders and a population perfectly defined. Globalization is a fact and the best consequence of it is the mixture of races, ideas and cultures, and this is exactly what this typography aims to show. Albollón is at once a semi-serif and a semi-sans serif typeface; it is a mixture made with the best parts from both sides. This way is how I understand a healthy society and a healthy design too. Albollón is designed to work in all types of text, both long and shorts, big and small ones.

Dever’s brute, industrial lines are rounded up in this new typeface from Jeremy Dooley. Dever combines plenty of inspirations. It’s the flair of the Wild West melded with a shout out to the sign painters and package lettering artists of the 1800s. Dever’s big, bold, and handy frame moves through all three of the family’s strapping members. First is the sans. No doubts on what this brother’s like. Dever Sans is as straight-forward as you’ll find in this family with its four separate weights and numerous distressed options. The second of the kin’s a bit of half-breed, you might say. Pointed serifs bring a sharpness to this outfit. Rounding out the family is Dever Wedge, a bit of wild rodeo all its own. This poke’s a quick draw with any of its 107 font, and with it’s auto-replacing alternates, no two repeating characters are alike. You’re guaranteed a great show anytime Dever leaves the chute. The route to Dever was long, with many a switchback. The Wedge variant was designed first, shelved, then developed into Plathorn. But I wanted to return to those brutish forms and decided to round out the family with a sans, serif and plenty of other options. Any of the Dever family have an extended character set including Central and Eastern European languages. The strong faces have specially adapted sub-families, too, so they’re bound and determined to have an outstanding impact at whatever size you use ‘em. This bold display font has considerable strength and will grace any design that requires extra impact. Due to the modular nature of this design there may be a very slight lack of smoothness to the curves at extremely large point sizes (around 100 pt and above).

Didot LP is a very elegant rendition of the 18th-century French typeface -- Didot. This design took the earlier Italian neo-classical model (Bodoni) to a new level of refinement, with fully rationalized shapes and delicate hairlines. Didot LP accentuates these qualities, providing a classical text face with a clear and modern voice. The companion face -- Didot LP Display -- optimizes the proportions, spacing and hairlines for use at very large sizes.

Stephen Chick, of In Your Typeface Productions (IYTP) foundry, has created this rather prickly type design. Although for display, it is surprisingly legible at smaller point sizes. There is an Inline version, and also an Inline Extra version, which has only the inner contours of the Inline itself, which can be combined with the Regular to create cool two-color effects. The extended glyph set supports Central Europe.

The main problem with handwritten fonts is the limited use in body text. Bodyhand is specifically designed to remedy this, for example when designing children's books with a larger amount of text or in similar contexts. Bodyhand is especially adapted to read comfortably even when used in small font size and requires approximately the same space as the fonts we usually use in body text, such as Times or Helvetica.

Slim proportions, but not “condensed” Characters which nearly touch Sparse ascenders and descenders Distinct forms How close to each other can the characters of a font get? Theoretically, as close as you want. But obviously, the words should still be legible. And as any designer knows, body clearance of characters also depends on other parameters such as point size and line spacing. In practice, there are always situations in which as much information as possible has to be positioned in as little space as possible. The ingoFont ÉconoSans is made for exactly this purpose. Even the name of the font implies its function: French for the infinitive “to save” is “économiser.” Now if that doesn’t sound good… The shapes of the upper and lower case letters are completely matter-of-fact, the way a modern font has got to be. The letters c e, and s are wide open to their neighbors. An especially distinguished trait of this font is the design of the “triangular” characters v w y x k z and A V W Y Z K X M N. And the open form of B R and P is also not typical in a sans serif. The distance between letters is kept tight and often the characters nearly touch, but only nearly. With ÉconoSans you gain approximately 20% more text in a line than with »Tahoma«, and even still more than 10% compared to »Helvetica«. ÉconoSans also includes tabular figures as well as ligatures. Carousel is a fat faces display type designed by Gary Gillot in 1966. Fat faces were offshoots of the modern, or Didone, typefaces that were de rigueur during the early 1800s. These fat faces were among the first typefaces to be used solely for advertising purposes. Naturally, they were always used in larger point sizes, in display functions. Carousel could be called an optimization of these old advertising typefaces. With high x-heights, ultra contrast between thick and thin strokes, and perfectly engineered drawing techniques, Carousel is a highly crafted typeface. A classic “American” sans serif with a kink Desphalia belongs to the kind of sans serif fonts that were created in the 19th century. You could also name it “American Gothic”, a sans serif in the style of fonts like Franklin Gothic, News Gothic and similar. Above all, the high x-height characterizes this typeface style, as do the identical heights of uppercase and ascenders. However, I allowed myself a few peculiarities ;-) On the one hand, there is the gently sloping horizontal middle line on letters such as H, E, F, A and e. The M also got gently slanted sides. Some of the lower-case letters have an up- or down-stroke: a d m n p u. This "kink" on the shaft also serves to better distinguish the small l from the capital I — as can be seen clearly with the term »Illinois«. In keeping with the tradition of American typefaces, Desphalia does not have a true italic. Rather, the letters of the “Italic” have the same character forms as the normal upright variant, but in oblique — and so it is not called “Italic” but “Oblique”. Style Set 01: Another American peculiarity is the capital I with dashes above and below. It is included in the Desphalia as an alternate character form. An alternative small l with the “kink” in the ascender is also included — as is a y with the “kink” in the descender. Style Set 02: The corresponding “straight” forms a d l m n p u without the break are included as alternatives in a separate style set. Small caps are uppercase letters that are optically the same size as lowercase letters. They offer a very classy way of emphasis. Desphalia is available in the widths Condensed, Normal and Expanded, the weights include Thin, Light, Book, Bold, Black. Using the variable font, all intermediate levels can be freely selected.
