The design process of this font was rudely interrupted on August 11th, 2015, when my first child, Hazel, was born. Thinking up names for fonts can be tricky, as can thinking up names for babies, so when the font was finally finished, it seemed like a good idea to kill two birds with one stone, and here it is: Hazel Script. Hazel Script is a finely crafted, elegant, connecting script. I wanted to make something unique, and to this end, the contrast in the face is not based on any ductal logic, or the writing of some imagined tool. The thick parts of glyphs are purely aesthetic devices, placed to give the otherwise monoline font an interesting rhythm. The over-sized upper case letters follow a mid-century lettering skeleton, and swash forms can be used judiciously to add spice to the text. Hazel Script works "out of the box" but to really get the best out of it, use OpenType-savvy programs to unlock a world of swashes, alternates, ligatures and the like. In detail, the features are as follows: Swash - alternate forms for many glyphs Stylistic Sets - 1: script r, 2: alternate s, 3: script z, 4 and 5: more swash options, 4,5,6 and 7: access to alternate ampersands (the font boasts six to choose from!), 8: connecting forms for K, L, R, X and Z. Localised forms - ij digraphs for Dutch, and a script lslash for Polish. Boot Camp JNL has the same roots as Jeff Levine's Condensed Stencil JNL, as they were both modeled from a set of vintage brass interlocking stencils made by the Stafford Manufacturing Company. Harajuku Script is an ‘easy-on-the-eye’ script font. I made it with a Japanese brush pen. The font is quite stylish, so I named it after Tokyo’s Harajuku area, which is known internationally as a center of Japanese youth culture and fashion. Harajuku Script would look good anywhere, but product packaging, websites and magazines could profit from this handwritten gem.

Kempoka is a Japanese word describing someone who practices Kempo. Kempo, or Chuan Fa in Chinese, is a martial art with roots in China and Japan. I thought of this brush font just before my weekly kempo-training and I figured the name suited the font style. Kempoka comes with alternates and ligatures, and has a black belt in diacritics!

Acceptable JNL is a typeface modeled from hand lettering on a piece of 1940s sheet music, and has a distinctly casual, yet Art Deco flair. It's name can also be mischievous, for when you're asked "which font should I use for the job" you can answer "the Acceptable font". There are roughly 400 surviving orthodox inscriptions on stone monuments throughout Ireland and western Britain, the bulk of which are in southern Munster. According to the High Medieval Bríatharogam, the names of various trees can be ascribed to individual letters. For this reason, ogam is sometimes known as the Celtic tree alphabet.
