VLNL TpDuro was designed by chef Martin Lorenz and Juanra ‘Wete’ Pastor. Its concept was inspired by an Albrecht Dürer design from 1525, which shows a system to construct a gothic lowercase letter. Following the logic of this lowercase construction, but not the traditional uppercase letters of regular fraktur (brokenscript) alphabets, some brand new upper case letters were designed. The 45 degree tilted square that forms the basis of the letters, is as square and hard as a cracker. And we love crackers. You can put cheese on them. The ‘pixel’ feeling of the downstroke was intensified by repeating the rotated square module as often as they could. All this resulted in a strong, dark typeface with a steady rhythm, with one foot in history and the other in modern times. It works well as a display typeface for short texts, headlines and logos. Music festivals and heavy metal bands should also pay attention. This is hard stuff.

Empire Display is a sans serif italic display face which references the styling of the 30s through to the 50s. It has a large x height and with its condensed proportions makes it ideal for headlines, posters or where large size settings are required. It has the unique feature of having the stems and cross bars slightly angled top and bottom. This also helps to create the art deco/modern feel that sets it apart from standard condensed typefaces.

The April 8, 1932 issue of The Film Daily ran an ad for a film entitled "The Sin of Lena Rivers". Hand lettered in a block style of chamfered characters, it is reminiscent of the 1920s, but still carries a touch of Art Deco influences with the thinner and extended horizontal strokes of the E, F and H. This retro sans serif design is now available digitally as Evil Ways JNL in both regular and oblique versions.

Sheet music for the title song from the 1933 Jean Harlow-Clark Gable film "Hold Your Man" has the movie title hand lettered in a dual line sans serif with Art Deco influences. Dean Martin starred in four movies as Matt Helm, the titular character in a series of spy novels by Donald Hamilton. Martin’s version of the government counter-agent followed his TV persona – a fun-loving ladies man who (in this case) just happened to be a spy. The movie poster for 1966’s “The Silencers” has its title hand lettered in an extra bold sans serif stencil style. This is now available as Spy Stencil JNL in both regular and oblique versions.

There was a big climate protest in Amsterdam a couple of days ago. During Greta’s speech, a man jumped onto the stage and grabbed her microphone, because he didn’t approve of what she was saying. Some English media referred to him as ‘the stage invader’, which I really liked. Long story short: I made a ‘protest-ish’ font, using cheap black finger paint from the local store and a brush from my kids. The result is a rather unique font called Stage Invader. And yes, you can use it for your protest signs too!
