John Baskerville (1706-1775) was an accomplished writing master and printer from Birmingham, England. He was the designer of several types, punchcut by John Handy, which are the basis for the fonts that bear the name Baskerville today. The excellent quality of his printing influenced such famous printers as Didot in France and Bodoni in Italy. Though he was known internationally as an innovator of technique and style, his high standards for paper and ink quality made it difficult for him to compete with local commercial printers. However, his fellow Englishmen imitated his types, and in 1768, Isaac Moore punchcut a version of Baskerville's letterforms for the Fry Foundry. Baskerville produced a masterpiece folio Bible for Cambridge University, and today, his types are considered to be fine representations of eighteenth century rationalism and neoclassicism. Legible and eminently dignified, Baskerville makes an excellent text typeface; and its sharp, high-contrast forms make it suitable for elegant advertising pieces as well. The rendezvous of the two terms seems quite unique and utopistic today, but it is comforting to see that it was natural at some time deep down in Russian history. Bits of both meanings were going through my mind while I was designing this typeface. Mir’s character set is multiscript – Latin, Cyrillic and Greek – and extends to many parts of the linguistic world. In fact it covers more than 100 languages. Stylistic consistency between the language systems make typographic border crossings painless even where national borders are still closely guarded. And in regions where mathematics, physics or chemistry are to be expressed, a rich set of OpenType features lets Mir master also these situations. Serious things are best be said in a relaxed, unpretentious way. So Mir doesn’t put on a show. Mir has authority without being authoritarian, it is serious but not stern. ITC Tabula is meant to be read. The design grew out of a study to create a font to set film subtitles. According to Julien Janiszewski, the face's Paris-based designer, “I set parameters for the design whereby the letters had to be able to hold up at very small sizes when set on film and yet must be able to be enlarged 2000 times to be read on a theatre screen.” The subtitle font was not completed, but several months later Janiszewski revisited the design and made a discovery. “I realized that the constraints I had established for the subtitling font was not that far from those people could have in creating typographic signage. Many time this calls for a font that can be used easily in very large sizes for headlines on highway billboards and quite small for text copy.” Work proceeded for two more years before Janiszewski was satisfied with the results. The final design is a somewhat squared sans serif family of four weighs with corresponding italics. Janiszewski also wanted to create what he calls a “sensitive sans-one that is not restricted to geometric shapes but has a subtle calligraphic, foundation.” ITC Tabula is not only easy to read, it is also a distinctive and handsome design.

The Hybi5 font family can be described as a “crossover” between Antiqua, Grotesque and Brushscript with characteristics from all of this genres. My aim was to design friendly and versatile fonts, which can be used for headlines or slogans as well as for some longer texts. To make the fonts useful for as many languages as possible, I added a lot of exotic accents. All styles contain the whole “Adobe Latin 3 (CE)” character set plus a few letters from “Adobe Latin 4”. A lot of ligatures prettify the look of the fonts. Alternate uppercase letters in the script style might do the same. If you are a professional designer, you will surely appreciate the thousands of kerning pairs within each style, which will make your work easier. I recommend to set Kerning to “metric” and spacing to “zero” in your layout app. Back in 2015 I worked on the first sketches of “Hybi5” using Adobe Illustrator. “Fontself Maker”, an extension for Illustrator, was used to convert the drawings into font-files. This tool can only create “OTF” font files. For this reason there are no “TTF” versions. It’s not the first font I have ever made, but the first to be distributed commercially.

The careful balance between the emotional swings and shapes set in strong contrast such as the burly serifs, or generally vertical and orderly appearance within the Duwal Pro determine the special look of this Antiqua typeface. All characters of the Duwal Pro are designed to be open and accessible. The lowercase letters are designed with a large x-height, which is why they are ideal for small font sizes. Many striking details give Duwal Pro a defined and firmer appearance with increasing font size so it is also suitable for use in headlines and work marks. The deliberately constructed and emphasized design of the serifs give the font a strong position and at the same time force the reading direction. Using Duwal Pro in Bold weight, the serifs look clearly striking, the design language is concise and the typeface receives an additional sympathetic force. The Italic weight draws on the expressive but not intrusive design of the Regular, but appears sharper and is ideal for text passages. Fontoddler Font Family, This font was created with the personality, in mind, of my two-and-a-half-year-old granddaughter Chloe Bella. I believe strongly that fonts have personalities that’s why we refer to their members as ‘characters’ or to be more accurate, ‘glyphs’.   In the early 1800s, Platt Rogers Spencer (1800-1864) created what would become the most widely accepted and prized cursive writing method used in business. Talking about the numerous types that today bear the name of Giambattista Bodoni are a kind of tribute as much to his reputation as a printer as to his ability as designer and engraver. In fact, all of them tent to be more in the way or style of Bodoni than simply copy of his letterforms. Like many other type designers, we’ve been seduced also to develop our own point of view of his work, nowadays enriched by some features of OpenType format that allows a variety of combinations: standard ligatures, discretional ligatures, stylistic alternates and old styles figures. Whereas the Bodoni serif in the capitals was of the same weight as the thin stroke but joined with a very slight fillet (Bracket) and the lowercase serif were like his French rivals, the Didots, featured straight- edged serifs that were unbracketed.
