Giambattista Bodoni (1740-1813) was called the King of Printers; he was a prolific type designer, a masterful engraver of punches and the most widely admired printer of his time. His books and typefaces were created during the 45 years he was the director of the fine press and publishing house of the Duke of Parma in Italy. He produced the best of what are known as "modern" style types, basing them on the finest writing of his time. Modern types represented the ultimate typographic development of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. They have characteristics quite different from the types that preceded them; such as extreme vertical stress, fine hairlines contrasted by bold main strokes, and very subtle, almost non-existent bracketing of sharply defined hairline serifs. Bodoni saw this style as beautiful and harmonious-the natural result of writing done with a well-cut pen, and the look was fashionable and admired. Other punchcutters, such as the Didot family (1689-1853) in France, and J. E. Walbaum (1768-1839) in Germany made their own versions of the modern faces. Even though some nineteenth century critics turned up their noses and called such types shattering and chilly, today the Bodoni moderns are seen in much the same light as they were in his own time. When used with care, the Bodoni types are both romantic and elegant, with a presence that adds tasteful sparkle to headlines and advertising. The Bauer Bodoni was done by Heinrich Jost for Bauer Typefoundry in 1927. This version has finer details of the original Bodoni types. It works well for headlines, logos, advertising.

Say hello to another of my hot and trendy scripts, Hot Script! I got the inspiration for this one in the world of sign painters. My neighbourhood, and more specifically the avenue were I live, is very well known for its ''parrillas'': For those who don't know what this means, well, it may be better to live the experience rather than reading these lines. Villa Urquiza is full of restaurants with an argentinian flavour, with a ''gauchezco'' feel. Here you can taste some of the best ''asados'' in the entire world. Ok, this made me hungry, let's go back to type: These amazing venues still mantain genuine elements from the past, and try to preserve the beauty of the handcrafted. Parrillas of Buenos Aires have all their walls, windows and doors lettered with chalk or paint. I've always wanted to make a font out of that, and Hot Script is my first attempt. I believe the results are great! Hot Script follows some rules of the flat brush (see terminals, and tails especially in caps) but its contrast of thicks and thins was manually altered to make the font better for a wider range of uses. Although the sexy curves and versatility of Hot seemed to be enough, I decided to spice it a little more by creating some layers for it: Hot Script Shine Solo or Hot Script Shades Solo combined with Hot Script will give outstanding results. The geometrical drawing of Fenomen Slab follows the guidelines set by our other font family Fenomen Sans. Theorem is an interesting change from the usual calligraphic work of Koziupa and Paul. An art deco font with a 1990s twist in its capitals, Theorem’s lowercase characters were designed to automatically achieve the best optical spacing in typesetting. To accomplish that goal, a variety of alternates were drawn for most letters, and plenty of vowel-focused ligatures were designed. Based on the late 1970s artwork by outstanding Armenian type designer Henrik Mnatsakanyan (1923-2001). That was the only design created by Mnatsakanyan for Latin and Cyrillic. Digital version with adding the missing characters was designed for ParaType in 2003 by Manvel Shmavonyan. The font name Henman proposed by Mnatsakanyan is formed of the first three letters from the each designer's name: HENrik and MANvel. I have seen my share of badly stuffed animals. Most of them via pictures, but also on vacations here and there. They all had this really bad handcraft vibe, but at the same time some really ordinary and kind of cute looks. I did my best to capture this look and feeling in my Badly Stuffed Animal font: clumsy letters made with a blobbly pen, with naive and irregular lines - and the conclusion is something super useful for a project that needs an organic handmade look!
