Adapting Playwright JNL (itself, a hand-lettered interpretation of "Broadway") to this style, the festive design is now a digital typeface called Southwest Serenade JNL.

Blackfriars, a Victorian-era release from the Stephenson Blake Type Foundry, provided the basis for this rough-hewn gem. Slightly clumsy yet eager to please, this typeface adds a cheerful warmth to any project it graces. The PC PostScript, TrueType and OpenType versions contain the complete Latin language character set (Unicode 1252) plus support for Central European (Unicode 1250) languages as well.

Take Five is a very jazzy typeface. It is more Swing than Bebop but it also evokes memories of the Cool Jazz era. Take Five can be used for jazzy covers or children's birthdays as well as jumble sales leaflets. Take Five is pretty versatile; no wonder - it is a descendant of my Bodoni Classic typeface family. A 1940s-era book from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers entitled "Topographic Drafting" features a page for "lettering construction and spacing" in the process of map making. The letters and numbers were formed on grids using that mechanical drafting process for uniformity in stroke width. This was the basis for Topographic Sans JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Hand lettering on the packaging for an Arrow "Commander" Staple Remover seen in an online auction is the inspiration for the unusual and angular typeface comprising Staple Remover JNL. The Art Deco era of the 1930s and 1940s offers many wonderful examples of stylized and experimental lettering, and this, by far is one of the more eclectic styles of the time.

Belhampton is a lively display family, full of the spirit of the Edwardian era. Six typefaces are offered: regular, bold, light, oblique, embossed and outline. The title card for the 1938 screwball comedy "Four's a Crowd" (starring Errol Flynn, Olivia de Havilland and Rosalind Russell) offered a classic, thin Art Deco type design with stylized letter forms. This is the basis for Society Column JNL; which derives its name from the newspaper columns popularized in that era detailing the whereabouts of the "upper crust" of society.

This hefty little number is an amalgam of two typefaces from the Flower Power era, Dave West’s Elephant Gothic and Wayne Stettler’s Neil Bold. It’s an extrabold, sassy headline face that will get your message across, loud and clear. Both versions include the complete Latin 1252, Central European 1250 and Turkish 1254 character sets, as well as localization for Moldovan and Romanian.

Par Avion's design draws something of its inspiration from the wings of the old BSA Motorcycles logo and was developed in parallel with our Vinea typeface family. “Par Avion” means ‘By Air’ - remember those little blue stickers in the Post Office - for sending Air Mail? We think this typeface design has a lovely streamlined feel of the early jet-era about it.

What sets wood type apart from the lettering designs created in the digital age is the simple premise that it is hand made. Show Card Deco JNL is a hybrid of examples from hand lettered titles found on various song folios from the Carl Fischer Music Library circa the 1930s and is available in both regular and oblique versions. This particular typeface lends itself perfectly to show cards, posters, headlines and display titling which captures the modern, streamlined design of the Art Deco era.

The 1920s were part of an era in songwriting where snappy wordplay and clever (if not long) titles prevailed. The lettering on one such piece of sheet music with the song title "In A Shady Nook by A Babbling Brook" offered up a bold, condensed sans serif design which is now available digitally as Brookside JNL. Available in both regular and oblique versions.

An Art Deco “thick and thin” novelty type design based on the hexagon shape was found within the pages of “La Lettre Dans le Decor & La Publicite Modernes” - a 1930s-era French alphabet collection. The title somewhat translates to “The Letter in Modern Decor and Advertising”). Named Oh Hex JNL, it is now available in both regular and oblique versions.

In the 1920 edition of “How to Paint Signs and Sho’ Cards” by E. C. Matthews is an example of what is termed “poster lettering” that is so free form and unusual it borders on the eccentric. Resembling lettering more commonly found in 1960s “underground comics” of the Hippie generation rather than of the Art Nouveau period, it oddly enough works well in both styles. Folkwang is an unusual roman type with a lowercase that resembles an upright italic. Unusual top serifs are contrasted by almost no foot serifs. Originally released by the Klingspor foundry in 1955, this face originated from Hermann Schardt while he was the director of the Folkwang Werkkunstschule in Essen Germany circa 1949. According to British book designer and printing historian John Dreyfus in the 1955 Penrose Annual: Folkwang “…is a lovingly made piece of work which could have easily have been little more than an act of awe-struck reverence for the calligraphic techniques rediscovered by Edward Johnston and spread abroad in Germany by Anna Simons. Of special interest is the serif treatment of the lower-case letters: at the feet the terminals are mostly left bare, but the ascenders and the cross-strokes of the f and t are given elaborate curving serifs which in the mass create an effect unusual in a page of letters made as movable types, resembling rather more a piece of intaglio engraving. The ligatures ch and ck are original and successful.”

I recently came across an old travel journal I’d misplaced, and in it was a really rough sketch of an Italian post office. The sign lettering caught my eye while flipping through the pages, and while not my forte, I thought I’d take my stab at recreating sans-serif lettering as a font. The Postale family recaptures that old post signage and the vintage flair that appeals to me. A little reminiscing is always a good thing. You’ll find the Stylistic Alternates feature changes up the retro styled letters to a more modern sans serif styling for a handful of letterforms, if the vintage style of certain letters isn’t your cup of tea.

In 1916 the Prang company - still famous for their excellent pens and pencils - commissioned Thomas Woods Stevens to hire the best calligraphers of the era to hand letter sample pages with different Prang pens and in a variety of styles. The resulting book is a font maker's dream, a collection of period lettering samples perfect for making new fonts. One of the sample pages shows off the look of the Spoonbill pen with a set of classic art deco style letters by Charles Earley. This sample is the basis for our Spoonbill font, which includes a full character set, plus character variations for nesting and overlapping, and a small selection of decorative border characters in the art deco style.

Quintet is a narrow, stylized sans serif font made up of thin, looping lines. This font tries to walk the line between retro and modern and to incorporate some hand drawn imperfections without being too obvious about it. I kicked off designing without any particular inspiration in mind but, as time went on, started associating it in my head with an old-timey, swingy jazz aesthetic. So hopefully it captures the spirit of the Jeeves and Wooster throwback theme song and opening credits, the music of Stéphane Grappelli and Django Reinhardt (who the name is a nod to), and countless album covers from that era.

Alessio Leonardi and his friends had the demand to create new unusual typefaces, which would be used in the leading German techno magazine of the day, Frontpage. Even typeset as small as 6-points, in nearly undecipherable layouts, it was a pleasure for the kids to read and try to decrypt the messages. F2F Poison Flowers is a psychedelic trip back in time to the era of peace and love. Who would have ever thought that grunge or techno could be so groovy?
