It occurred to me years ago that the graphic arts community might find useful a digital typeface that mimicked the classic look of nineteenth-century handwriting. Conveniently, my mother then still volunteered at the Center for American History at the University of Texas at Austin, my hometown. She made copies of the letters of a few famous Texans -- Houston, Austin, Travis, Burnet, Rusk. Thomas J. Rusk’s penmanship caught my eye as the most accessible of the bunch. I hadn't realized at the time what a challenge it'd be to render a realistic-looking script face, but the result has, in fact, filled a niche.

Replay is a pure hymn to the classic typeface Caslon originally made by William Caslon (1692–1766). The typeface that bears his name, was made between 1720 and 1726. In 1739 he founded the Caslon Foundry which later become a property of Stephenson, Blake & Co., but remained an independent foundry until 1937. The typeface have been popular ever since it was made and still stand proud as a classic text face. MRF made detailed research, including versions from Adobe and Justin Howes. The end result is leaning more towards the original. Some minor »imperfections« are also incorporated in order to make the typeface more lively and old fashioned.

Svengali Roman is loosely inspired by a scrap of 1920s newspaper posted in the Typophile font identification forum. The consensus view there favored the view that the specimen showed hand-drawn lettering. In the early days of printing everything had to be worked out from scratch. We have been in lockdown for a long time now. The schools were also closed, meaning my kids had to stay at home. Project D is the fourth typeface released by DM Founts. It was inspired by the infamous graffiti atop the former Heygate Estate in South London, which I had passed by numerous times on the overground train years ago. Heygate Estate has since been replaced by soulless luxury flats, as per the gentrification agenda. The letters don't entirely match the graffiti as they were created from memory, but I thought such a profound statement should be honoured. Project D is best used for impact at large sizes, although it should scale well. During a ‘type walk’ at the 2007 AtypI conference in Brighton, typographer Phil Baines pointed out what he considered to be a particularly egregious example of over-decorative art nouveau lettering on a war memorial. This made me determined to use it as the basis for a font. Released in Opentype, it now features ligatures, swashes and alternates. It’s not certain if the curved top bars on the E and F are a feature of the original design or due to climbers using them as footholds, but I incorporated them anyway. It has recently been used for invitations and supporting print material for formal charity dinners at the House of Lords.

My family and I recently bought a fixer-upper farm from the 1930 and I have been renovating and building for the last three+ months. I have a lot on my mind (as you can imagine), so I write little notes to keep track of what I need to do. Of course, since I’m often in the middle of something that needs to be done NOW, these notes are kind of messy. Monocto is an upright italic, clearly evidenced by the lowercase letters a, e, f, g, i, k, l, v, w, x, y and several capitals. As the writing tool touches the paper, a double-square with broken corners is produced, which then, according to ductus, transforms itself into letter components that are either 90°-verticals or 45°-diagonals. Forte was designed by the Austrian commercial artist by Carl Reissberger who was trained as a compositor and later taught typography and drawing in Vienna. The idea for the Forte script font came from the study of plants, individual letter forms being inspired by the long stems and furry heads of the reed.
