A page from an "ideas booklet" that was copyrighted in 1939 by the Sanford Ink Company displayed a hand lettered variation on the counter-less [or solid] alphabet that so typified the Art Deco style of the times. This type of lettering style was a workhorse, and could (and still can) tackle any message with strength, clean lines and class.

Compacta is the work of Fred Lambert and is reminiscent of the extremely narrow, sans serif stencilled fonts of the 1920s, then intended as titles or headlines for magazines and posters. The characters of all cuts are narrow and the space between letters is very small. The white spaces between strokes are perceived almost as only small white stripes and dots which stand out from the black bands of the lines of text. Subroyal was inspired by the official logo of the City of Montreal. The idea came to us while reading an article about a revised version of this logo that didn't have any original typography. We realized it was our civic duty to bring the City logo to life, and the result is a fairly romantic font that reminds us of the many parks around the island, its fragile snowflakes, and its electronic music scene. While designing ITC Spirit, Patty King was influenced by classic typeface styles. The letter forms are clearly based on those of the Unziale, which, like ITC Spirit, is also composed of only capital letters. Hints of the Asian brush script style also show in this font. If there were a source in particular that I would cite as my inspiration, however, it would definitely be the work of Frank Lloyd Wright. I mean, look at the "W" for cryin' out loud!
