Architype Konstrukt is a collection of avant-garde typefaces deriving mainly from the work of artists/designers of the inter-war years, whose ideals have helped to shape the design philosophies of the modernist movement in Europe. Due to their experimental nature character sets may be limited. Architype Albers draws on early grid-based attempts by Josef Albers, in 1926, to design an alphabet by reducing the forms to purely geometric elements – the square, triangle and parts of a circle – and in the process creating an unusual stencil effect typeface.

Salom was designed by Austrian type designer Igor Labudovic during his year at Reading University. Besides Latin, it originally included Arabic and Hebrew. The peaceful coexistence of both writing systems in his fonts led him to combine the words Salaam and Shalom to the font family name. Salom’s sibling, Salom Sans, features the same letter proportions and therefore allows a rich spectrum of diverse typography, yet keeping the harmony between all styles. The sans has an additional light weight, while the serif comes with an expressive stencil style.

Sébastien Truchet designed a modular typographic system during his last year in the School of Fine Arts of Besançon. Architype Van Doesburg derives from the 1919 experimental geometric alphabet by Theo van Doesburg, whose work was heavily influenced by De Stijl theories, specifically rectangularity. The typeface has been constructed on the same 5 x 5 grid, and is limited by his ‘single alphabet’ theory.

At first glance, Handbills and Posters JNL bears a strong resemblance to Classroom JNL. True, they both share the visual qualities that are based on Franklin Bold Condensed, but this is where the similarity ends. Handbills and Posters JNL is a refined re-draw of the classic design, based largely on vintage typographic examples. There are also some character variances. Classroom JNL is a rougher alphabet with varying curves and lines, and resembles such letters traced and cut out of construction paper for a bulletin board display at school.

Daniel Berkeley Updike seems to have stimulated the architect Bertram G. Goodhue to design the prototype in 1896 for Ingalls Kimball at the Cheltenham Press. Six years later Morris Fuller Benton at ATF developed it into the design and then the series that we know today. “Owing to certain eccentricities of form,” writes Updike, “it cannot be read comfortably for any length of time.” But he concludes: “It is, however, an exceedingly handsome letter for ephemeral printing.” Mergenthaler bought composing machine rights to the original design c. 1896, but bought the Benton design in 1904.

ITC Mudville was Christopher Wolff's entry in the 1998 U&lc Type Design Competition, for which he won an Honorable Mention (Display). Mudville evolved from variations on hand-lettering that Wolff had done on a variety of projects over the years. The underlying shapes of the letters are formal roman letterforms, but the actual strokes retain the look of letters sketched casually on a layout. Mudville straddles the line between inline and outline type designs. It recalls some of the styles of popular lettering used in display advertising in the '20s.

Reinstaedt is a fancy new display font family designed from scratch by Andreas Stötzner. The very first sketches were inspired during a holiday spent in remote Reinstädt of Thuringia (Germany). These letters were developed to decorate the font Bowling and then were also used in the fonts Coffeemug and Teapot. For many years the InsideLetters family had only one family member, InsideLetters. An upgrade in early 2019 added two more family members, InsideLettersHalloween and InsideLettersXmas. The first puts the letters from InsideLetters on pumpkins and the second puts them on Christmas tree ornaments. In 2022 and oblique stye was added to the family. Inside letters is caps-only. It is a casual and playful handwritten sans-serif font.

String Theory has been a 10+ year project in the making which originated from a type workshop in Graduate School at Otis College of Art & Design. The workshop was hosted by Dutch designer Hansje Van Halem, and we were tasked to play with string to create letterforms. Thus String Theory was born, and slowly migrated from yarn, to an illustrator file, to what it is today as a type family. Each glyph has it’s own custom string set up, along with each weight. Experimental in nature, edgy, with subliminal angst and grittiness.

This typeface was inspired by a font used by Henrie Ballard. Ballard operated on Fleet Street at the Signe of the Bear in London, England. He was active in the industry from 1597-1608. The font is meant to capture the feel of the original typeface with the capability of reproducing the many ligatures that are part of what make that era's printing interesting. The Italic version has a dramatic feel that is almost handwritten in appearance. Every Proportional Lime font comes with a complete guide to its Unicode extended character set.

The inspiration for this font (as well as the name!) comes from a London cafe I visited years ago. I was fascinated with the handwritten menu - irregular and awkward, yet refreshingly charming. I did my best to recall that particular look by adding 4 slightly different versions of each lowercase letter. The name of the font comes from the speed of the waiter...or the lack of it! But luckily he took his time, otherwise I wouldn't have had the time to really look at the handwritten menu! :)

Grosen Typeface Family is designed by Oğuzhan Cengiz in the years 2017-2019. It has a grotesque structure that contains humanistic effect. Marek is a slab serif font it takes it's name from a football player from the Naples soccer team  “Marek Hamsik”. It is composed of 5 weights (thin, light, regular, bold and black with matching italics), it's ideal for big headers as for magazines, t-shirts, branding and much more. It is available in open type format and includes alternative fonts (a,K,k,g), ligatures, oldstyle and linear number. Deep in the bowels of the earth a tortured creature tries to mimic the writings of mankind. It labors long and hard carving the letter forms on the walls of its cave. Many years later, rubbings where taken of these impressions and fashioned to create this hideous font. All kidding aside, with such a formal training in type design, it was not easy for me to create these ill-shaped letters. I kept wanting to smooth out the outlines. Anyway, it was a good exercise and we now have this antique heavy-weight.

MVB Peccadillo is an interpreted revival of a metal typeface popular in the 19th Century, then known as Skeleton Antique. Highly condensed with extra short descenders, the face makes a big impact in a narrow space. Holly Goldsmith worked from letterpress-printed specimens of 96-point, antique metal type, deliberately retaining subtle distortions due to type wear and letterpress impression. Alan Dague-Greene, referring to printed samples of Skeleton Antique, adapted the design to create two additional optical sizes: “Eight” for smaller text and “Twenty-four” for subheads.

My Hero Father is a quirky playful font with father's day theme. This font has 7 variations of fonts, each variation has a different decoration. The decorations are items that a father often wears, such as: cigarettes, glasses, hats, mustaches, ribbons and crowns. I made this font specifically for the Father's Day theme, but other than that this font can also be used for other projects. This family was inspired by an engraved plate from Diderot & Dalembert's Encyclopedia (publication beginning in 1751), illustrating the chapter devoted to letter engraving techniques. The plate bears two engravers names : "Aubin" (may be one of the four St Aubin brothers ?)and "Benard" ( which name is present below all plates of the Encyclopedia printed in Geneva ). It seems to be a transitional type, but different from Fournier or Grandjean. Small caps are included in fonts for TTF and OTF version, separate files are included in the family sets of the Mac TT version.

Architype Universal is a collection of avant-garde typefaces deriving mainly from the work of artists/designers of the inter-war years, whose ideals underpin the design philosophies of the modernist movement in Europe. Their ‘universal’, ‘single alphabet’ theory limits the character sets. Architype Bayer-type is based upon Herbert Bayer’s 1931 universal, modern serifed alphabet. Although the ‘modern’ style appears to be a radical departure from his first sans single alphabet of 1925, the structure of this later serifed style is still grid based and geometrically constructed.

This typeface is a new and improved (really!) version of one of my most popular freeware fonts, Team Spirit, which has made appearances in the Tank McNamara comic strip and on Blue Collar TV. Add the “nose” at the front with an open parenthesis -(- and add the tail with a close parenthesis -). To continue the bar beneath between words, use the _underscore in place of a space. No math operators and limited punctuation, but complete accented characters for the Unicode 1252 (Latin) and Unicode 1250 (Central European) character sets, with localization for Romanian and Moldovan.

I was commissioned by the Emporium (now Macys) to digitize Radiant Bold Extra Condensed (originally designed by Robert Middleton in 1940) for use in their Sunday supplement to the San Francisco Examiner. For several years, I stubbornly refused to add the lowercase letters to the font, because I thought it looked best just used with caps, but finally relented, added the lowercase letters and at the same time created two more weights as well: Light and Medium. Used very large and carefully, these faces can be quite elegant.

Sys is a condensed font designed to work well at small sizes (i.e. phone books, maps, or the like) but it has enough personality to be used at big sizes, too. The TrueType version, thanks to its incredibly accurate hinting, may be used to replace amazingly well TrueType system fonts in every platforms, in web or other screen applications. After the succcess by the first version designed ten years ago, the version 2.0 has numerous improvements in the design of the glyphs, new Unicode ranges, useful OpenType features and enhanced readability.

Her father named her Estella Dawn, or morning star. She truly shines bright, for as the owner of Stella Roberts Fonts, she has dedicated part of her net profits to helping her siblings pay for their medication; they both suffer from Cystic Fibrosis and diabetes. Calm in spirit, loyal to friends and family, nurturing and caring-- Stella has been a friend of Jeff Levine's for years. His Estella JNL font was dedicated to her, as is this other namesake font, Morningstar JNL. The design is a cross between retro-techno and a slight calligraphic touch.

This serif typeface is a real workhorse. It is a modern tool for text design: extremely legible and well shaped. Bandera Text has six weights with original italics. Rough Riders Redux along with our Rough Riders font, got its start from a small sample of letters used in the logo for the Beach Creek Railroad Co. dating back to the early 1860’s. I studied the design for one year before drawing the letters. Rough Riders and the Redux version are simply the most Wildest Western looking fonts you'll find. The Rough Riders fill font is not meant to be used as a stand alone black typeface, the fill font is designed to be layered behind the regular Rough Riders font.

A casual semi-connected script, Eubie Script’s letterforms rise and drop to create surprising word shapes, helped by position-specific ligatures and contextual alternates. With tenacious rhythm and dynamic connections, Eubie Script gives power to your headings and overlays. To meet its design goals, Eubie Script draws from the many lettering styles of Harry Knorr, an artist at Globe Poster for over 50 years. The script’s contours are drawn (impossible to write with any tool) like the work of Knorr, who occasionally cut his captions directly into the printing linoleum backwards without preliminary sketching.

Biffo was designed by David Marshall and produced in 1964. The alphabet in handwritten style has the character of writing done with a broad tipped pen. The figures are round and flexible, even its vertical strokes have rounded edges, softening the look of the characters. The basic forms show parallels with a pear shape: generous in the lower third and thinning out as they move upward. Biffo is a unique, lively typeface perfect for personal correpondence and for communicating spontaneity. It is best for short and middle length texts as well as headlines.

Wonderbar 2 is wacky, retro, and not to be taken too seriously. The wavy nature throughout the characters ensure that you're in for a wild ride. Alternating between upper and lowercase letters is like shifting gears. Uppercase characters take on a more undulating flow with stems that reach out to tickle you. Because of this slight overlap should be expected. In addition to Latin this childlike display font is equipped with Extended Latin for many European languages as well as Cyrillic. Try it in a children’s book, poster, or birthday invitations.

My 9-year old son Sam asks a lot (a LOT!) of questions. Like: ‘what killed the dinosaurs?’ (probably an asteroid), ‘what is the distance to Pluto’ (about 7.5 billion km), ‘how big is space’ (93 billion lightyears - give or take). I am pretty sure he asked me about gravity as well. Gravitational Pull is a messy pencil script font. It comes with a whole bunch of double-letter ligatures and some really wonky glyphs. And no, in its virtual form, this font is not subject to the Earth’s gravitational pull.

I used to be a frequent flyer; as a tour guide I often had 6 to 10 international flights per year. At the time I didn’t even think about the consequences of flying, as I loved my job and the job was all about travel. Now, with the planet in deplorable state, I try to keep flying to an utter minimum. I guess you call it ’shame of flying’… Frequent Flyer font is a nice, eroded, all caps font. It comes with multilingual support, so you may come across it during your travels.

The specimen book Alphabete: ein Schriftatlas von A bis Z identified the pattern for this typeface as Stymie Black Flair. Although neither the designer nor the original foundry is identified, it bears a strong resemblance to the work of Dave West for Photolettering in the 60s and 70s. Big, beautiful and bodacious, it’s a natural choice for attention-grabbing headlines. Many alternate characters available: see the full character map. The PC PostScript, TrueType and OpenType versions contain the complete Latin language character set (Unicode 1252) plus support for Central European (Unicode 1250) languages as well.
