The Rocaie fonts are base on antique Rococo letters from an gilding workshop. I was very lucky to acquire this set of metal letters in early 2018. Each of the letters has ornaments engraved by hand into its cast brass shapes. When drawing the digital outlines, I tried to preserve the handmade look of the original leaf engravings. Each of the letters uses a slightly different ornament pattern: no pattern is repeated identically. I expanded the very limited character set of the original, adding all the missing characters that today’s commercial fonts are expected to contain. I made additional font styles to easily add colour layers, outlines, and 3D shadows to the typeface. It’s up to you to decide how to “build” your colour font! You can combine the predefined font styles Regular, Pearl, Solid, Outline, and Magnum with each other, or with the Fill font styles. But you don't need to use all font styles to compose something nice! Have as much fun as I did with this Baroque beauty and enjoy the vintage.

Later it has developed into Diaria Pro, an extensive typeface including Cyrillic script, small caps, and various OpenType features. Diaria Pro is a low-contrast serif typeface designed as a primary text face for the newspapers. The lettering found on an 1878 Salt Lake City advertisement for the Forepaugh’s Circus inspired Faux Pas JNL, which is a bit of a pun on the circus’ name and also a commentary on how this unusual lettering style seems to break all of the rules on stroke width and balance. According to Wikipedia: “Adam John Forepaugh (February 28, 1831 - January 22, 1890) was an American entrepreneur, businessman, and circus owner. Forepaugh owned and operated a circus from 1865 through 1890 under various names including Forepaugh's Circus, The Great Forepaugh Show, The Adam Forepaugh Circus, and Forepaugh & The Wild West. In 1889, Forepaugh sold his circus acts to James Anthony Bailey and James E. Cooper and he sold his railroad cars to the Ringling Brothers. The Ringlings used the equipment to transform their circus from a small animal-powered production to a huge rail-powered behemoth, which later purchased the Barnum & Bailey Circus. In 1066, William, duke of Normandy, was invading England. He was demanding the crown for himself, against King Harold the Saxon. He killed Harold and reached the crown at Hastings, the well-known battlefield. A few years later, in Bayeux (Normandy, French)was displayed a large tapestry (almost 70 m long) who was telling the story of the conquest. Along the tapestry was written a comment in Latin, using Roman capitals influenced a little by English or Scandinavian style (as it is visible in the Eth character). We have created the font, inspired from this design, adapted for contemporary users, making difference between U and V, I and J, which has not any relevance for ancient Latin scribes, and naturally with Thorn, Oslash, Lslash... and usual accented characters did not exist at the time. We also have reconstructed the K, German double s and Z, always using patterns of the time. We have scrupulously respected the poetic irregular and distressed original forms with two or three alternate for each characters, including reconstructed numerals.
