Magazin ST is powerful but delicate. What fascinated me seeing, a couple of letters, in Bob Roy Kelly's book (American Wood Type:1828-1900) were the little squares in the corners that represent a glow from lighting coming from below and from the right. Such ambiguity excited me and I thought that today with digital resources it wouldn't take long to do it. Seeing it working is excellent. Fonts created by comicbook letterers tend to have more creatively inspired names. That's because comicbook letterers are trained as storytellers. The names they choose for their fonts seek to tell the story of what context that particular font is to be used in. Bone Voyage is inspired by coming up with the name first. It hit me one day that the '60s-vintage labelmaker I had lying around might make an interesting display face. I began playing with it -- clicking out letters at various pressures, scanning the results, going over the scans in a vector-graphics program. Looked pretty good. To my chagrin, however, I soon afterward got a glimpse of someone else's label-tape font. Though modeled after a more modern device, its rocketing popularity prompted me to set Chromosome aside for a year or so. Finally finished it up in late-1995. Full release has light and heavy weights, regular and reversed styles.

“More is better” may have been the motto of Richard Austin of Austin and Son’s Imperial Letter-Foundry on Worship Street at Finsbury Square in London when he designed and cut his Antique typeface. The year it was created is uncertain, but it is known to have appeared in a specimen book produced in 1827. At first glance, the upper case letters of Austin Antique look very much like Figgins Antique. But, upon examination, one will note that the Austin face is much darker. In general, the letters designed and cut by Richard Austin have fatter strokes, larger serifs and smaller counters -- more metal and less daylight. The premise was that the darker the letter, the more attention an ad using the typeface would receive. In old pictures of London and Paris one may see walls crowded with posters and “bills” -- competing for the attention of the passerby. Morris and Updike aside, the early nineteenth century marked the beginning of a commercial as well as industrial revolution. Patterns of commerce were changing. With new methods of marketing came the need for new typefaces to support the new methods. Foundries found the display types were very profitable and competed most energetically and creatively for the trade. There was a lot of trial-and-error. Some ideas faded away. Others, like the Antiques or Egyptians, were refined and developed. From them came the Clarendons that were to prove both popular and long lasting -- because they worked. Their job was to sell goods, not please the aesthetic sensibilities of the critics. They did their job well. Austin Antique has a full Western European character set, plus the following ligatures: ct, st, fi, fl, ff, ffi and ffl. Tabular numbers. Surprisingly readable.

Although inspired by the engraved lettering on eighteenth-century English trade-cards, ITC Vineyard has unusual characteristics of its own. The type retains some quality of copperplate scripts, but the differentiation between thicks and hairlines is not very sharp. There are a few cursive forms, but most of the letters are romanized: they are almost upright and not joining. Occasional flourishes are casually interpreted from various sources such as the lettering on trade-cards and writing masters' copybooks. “I think it is a new kind of 'copperplate script' which is not too formal and easier to read,” claims designer Akira Kobayshi. Irregularities are apparent in the angle of caps and numerals, but the face's quirkiness gives a type page some friendliness rather than cold brilliancy. ITC Vineyard is designed in two weights: regular and bold. Each variation includes several extra characters such as an alternative lowercase 'd' with a long arm, a T-h ligature, swelled rules, and a pair of flourishes. Swash caps are available for both weights. The swash caps variation also includes oldstyle figures. Kobayashi notes: “There are a few swash-cap lowercase combinations that collide or look awkward. Fatman is such big thick person. To me it seems to the most interesting font Fatman BL. I name it fatman with the broken leg. The letter A is similar to it.

Bodoni Classic Deco is against all rules. Giambattista Bodoni himself would probably hate me for doing it; he was a real purist. The whole idea of the Bodoni typeface is no embellishments and here I go and decorate those nice clear letters. Shame on me! But I find this is a very nice and useful typeface for all kinds of cards and certificates. So I just did it for all of you out there that are not born purists, but want a little embellishment to their lives. And to make things worse, I added a Small Caps cut. I even decorated it. Enjoy!
