Discharge is a bold, heavy, distressed and destroyed sans serif typeface. It was started alongside Universally Corrupt and Insurgent, but it took a couple extra years to finish. Architype Crouwel is a collection of typefaces created in collaboration with Wim Crouwel, following his agreement with The Foundry, to recreate his experimental alphabets as digital fonts. Crouwel's most recognized work was for the Van Abbe and Stedelijk museums (1954 –72) where he established his reputation for radical, grid-based design. Architype Catalogue’s soft ‘padded’ letterforms were originally created by Wim Crouwel for the Stedelijk museum’s 1970 exhibition of sculptor Claes Oldenburg.. Crouwel said, ‘When you look at Oldenburg’s work, with all those soft objects, it gets into your system, so you try to integrate that feeling in the design. Claes was very taken with the catalogue's typeface, and asked me if I would do the whole alphabet for him, so I did. I cut it all out in pink paper and pasted it together’.

From the standpoint of calligraphy, a font family of capitals and uncials makes perfect sense. The Roman square capitals, the quadrata, are matched by round capitals of older Greek origin; the word "uncus" means hook-shaped like a beak or talon. Interrelated and often interchangeable, these capital letters served as book hands for both the Latin West and the Greek-speaking East before they evolved into minuscule alphabets. The Testament family is based on the few formal capital manuscripts of the Bible, Virgil and Homer that have survived from the ancient world. Throughout the Middle Ages both uncials and square capitals were used, often together, for headings and initial characters. By their nature the Roman capitals are the voice of Caesar and hold the place of authority, while the uncials speak for the Church in a balanced relationship. In ancient times church and state were not as separate as they are now, and the alphabets were not as different as typographic tradition has made them. In this calligraphic rendering it is clear that they are of the same substance and can be written in the same style, conveying even to the modern eye the eternal and classical quality of epic and scripture. An upright typeface family developed to meet the demand for letters to produce pupil material for handwriting as well as for reading. Inlines that go over, under sideways, down! Deck out your headlines in grand style with this unusual inline face, based on Dektiv, a seventies-style classic from "Homage to the Alphabet." Both versions include the complete Latin 1252, Central European 1250 and Turkish 1254 character sets, as well as localization for Moldovan and Romanian.

The pattern for this elegant, if slightly quirky, Art Deco typeface was drawn by Gustav Jensen for the 1931 classic, American Alphabets. Perfect for suggesting the exotic, the font also includes several graphic elements in Jensen’s inimitable style. Both versions of the font include 1252 Latin, 1250 CE (with localization for Romanian and Moldovan).

A condensed, light face spurred serif alphabet was shown on an antique catalog page from Spon & Chamberlain Publishers as “French”. The catalog likely sold tools and dies to stonecutters for making inscriptions in marble, granite and so forth. This was put together by Dan X. Solo to provide a quick way to set headings for a circus brochure. The name was given in recognition of the Baraboo Circus Museum. The end pieces are in pairs on the uppercase keys A-B, C-D, etc. The alphabet itself is in the lowercase position.

CS are the initials of Carsten Strinkau, a young German graphic and type designer who studied in Hamburg. CS Takashi is a hommage to the Japanese Manga artist Katsuhiro Otomo and his character/figure Takashi from the Akira-Manga. Takashi appears like Japanese kanji but looking more closely, you will read the Latin alphabet.

ITC Buckeroo was designed by Rick Mueller in 1997, and as the name suggests, it is reminiscent of the Wild West in the US. It is a small caps alphabet with extremely heavy characters, which makes it particularly good for headlines. This ornamental font should be used in point sizes of 12 or larger.

Caesar Dressing is a 'Markers' take on a Greek alphabet. Open Window fonts gravitate towards more experimental or spontaneous renderings and this one doesn't look out of place next to the most experimental of those. Italian type design master Aldo Novarese was not famous for making calligraphic designs, nor had he any interest in them. He is much better known for his text faces, and quite innovative sans serif and decorative designs which became the definition of what we now know as techno and modern. But in 1968, Novarese surprised everyone with a fantastic flowing deco script entitled Elite. Novarese's formula of simple soft curves and toned-down swashes makes for one of the most unique alphabets ever seen, not to mention one of the best flowing and most legible scripts. This is now its digital incarnation, named Fontella. Fontella's applications are virtually limitless. This is the sort of script that can feel at home pretty much anywhere; a sign, a fridge magnet, a bumper sticker, a greeting card, a movie poster, a book cover, music artwork, magazine ads, newsletter headlines, etc. Digitized from original specimen and expanded with a few built-in alternates and ligatures by Rebecca Alaccari, the font was named after the famed jazz singer Fontella Bass. These letters are just so sweet they had to be called Fontella.

I was inspired to create the Rainier type family during my summer back home in the Pacific Northwest. The concept behind it may be simple - a hand crafted font family - but what it delivers is quite complex!
