An image spotted on the internet of a brass shipping stencil for the Royal Quality Brand (for the John H. Fitch Company of Youngstown, Ohio – a coffee and spice merchant). The lettering style for “Royal Quality” was a hand-cut, condensed, slightly flared sans serif with various character flourishes, giving the letters a stylish, somewhat regal look. It's nice when a font provides old style figures, small caps and alternate letters. But what to do if my typesetting program doesn't support Open Type features? The solution may be old-fashioned, but it's effective: the variants are placed in separate font families: Standard, Old Style Figures (OSF), and Small Caps (SC). Any word processor can handle it. As a special feature, my OSF fonts also contain alternative letters such as a looped g or descenders in the italic f.

Karolina is a calligraphic serif font. This is definitely a font suitable for kids toys. The letters are legible, and at the same time totally wacky! Kinda like what a kids toy should be! Fidusmager started out as a handdrawn, slightly rugged looking fon. However I ended up manually tracing each letter in order to have those smooth lines. By the way, Fidusmager is danish and actually means someone who’ll trick you - but as a kid I didn’t know that, and found that it most likely was something positive! :)

Herald Banner is the newest (as at January 2017) of Greater Albion’s ‘Banner’ or ‘Masthead' typeface. It tales the form of letters on a long heraldic banner twined about a central mace. It is offered in two forms- a conventional monochrome typeface and a set of eight interrelated typefaces designated ‘Colour’ 1 through to ‘Colour 8’. In the 70's I went out with a girl whose father was a card-carrying member of 3 of the biggest unions in the printing arts. He gave me 2 things, a pre-war Linotype specimen book and an ancient 'how to' lettering book that contained 30 or 40 script specimens from lettering artists of the time. The A.B. Dick Company was a manufacturer of mimeograph duplicating machines which produced copies by the process of transferring ink through an etched wax stencil onto paper.
