Released in 1993, Ocean Sans is a sans serif design created for Monotype by the talented Malaysian designer, Ong Chong Wah. Orto is a type family of sans serif fonts in eight weights. It's a humanist typeface with real cursive, containing both Roman and Italic styles. The letters are designed to look good on screen, they have a bit narrower proportions and simple shapes. Their structure is based on flat horizontal and vertical strokes, which are emphasized wherever possible. That’s where the name comes from: Orto is an abbreviation of the word orthogonal. Thanks to its narrow width, the typeface is less space-consuming and adapts well to the screens of smaller devices. It is legible in small sizes, thanks to the larger x-height. Mellow Sans is a soft and friendly rounded sans serif. Its bold styles are great for packages of something tasty, while light and regular ones work well in rather long texts, from a children's book to a reading app, or a family restaurant menu. The typeface was created by Natalya Vasilyeva, an expert in designing text and calligraphic typefaces. Mellow Sans’s forms are based on humanist sans serifs. Kornelis de Vries, a headmaster from the Dutch province of Friesland, cultivated new potato breeds that he named after pupils in his school. In the early 1900s he came up with the tasty Bintje (a Frisian girl’s name) and it became a big success – in Belgium and France it has remained the most popular potato for french fries to this day, more than a century since its introduction. Donald Roos took 10 kilos of fresh Bintje potatoes and cut the Bint typeface by hand with a short, sharp knife. He then inked each character once and printed it twice; the second, lighter printing is accommodated in the lower case alphabet. The Bint family offers a script to make the letters bounce up and down the baseline; with OpenType functionality the font randomly chooses each character from the upper- or lowercase alphabet. ‘Tabular lining figures’ will activate a series of negative numerals in boxes; ‘Discretionary ligatures’ activates specially designed letter combinations like ‘www’ as well as arrows and stars. Bint has a distinct, slightly rough handmade appearance, making it useful for a wide range of designs.

American Uncial™ was designed by Victor Hammer in 1943. Uncial typefaces consist of letter forms of the Capitalis Monumentalis and the majescule cursive. The origins of Uncial faces date back to the 5th century. In 1953, American Uncial was expanded to include some new figures, also designed by Hammer, and was rereleased by Klingspor with the name Neue Hammer Unziale. The forms are based on old scripts in books of antiquity and the early Middle Ages and the font is a new variation of a classic. Neue Hammer Unziale font has been a favorite for certificates and diplomas and is recommended for headlines and shorter texts in a point size of 12 or larger.

Nimbus Sans ME is the expansion within the Nimbus Sans family for the Middle East range: Arabic (incl. Farsi) and Hebrew. ITC Mona Lisa was designed by Pat Hickson, a stark and elegant typeface originally drawn in the 1930s by Albert Auspurg. The original drawings were long gone and the surviving metal type was already severely worn when Hickson studied Auspurg's design for his recreation. The result is a typeface which melds the flavor of the 1930s with current design standards. ITC Mona Lisa displays all the suave sophistication of Fred Astaire and Greta Garbo.

Inspired by Italian Renaissance fonts like Poliphilus, Blado, Centaur and Arrighi, Lucca presents a simple charm and a powerful classic feel. It is cute, friendly, clear and superbly readable. Its low contrast provides Lucca a firm yet flexible substance, making it sensual and enticing. There’s a certain degree of abstraction in the precise endings, and the whole design was made to survive even in the harshest conditions, conserving its readability and beauty.

Between 1958 and 1961, Herbert Thannhaeuser developed the typeface Liberta for Typoart as a broadly conceived newspaper type which established itself quickly. Its positive adaptation by publishing houses and printing companies was based, next to its agreeable and reader-friendly general impression, also on a relatively robust typeface character which does not sacrifice its power of impression and elegance even when confronted with poor paper and printing qualities. In the 1970s, a bullish and robust design style took over the area of consumer goods which then required a corresponding advertising face. Harald Brödel re-worked the Liberta Ultra for phototypesetting, and, with great sensitivity, designed a matching cursive variation. Both types work especially well as an attention getter for advertising and for emphasis purposes.

Bonhomme Richard evokes the cursive penmanship of Chevalier John Paul Jones (1747–1792), celebrated Continental Navy commander during the American Revolution, in letters from the late 18th century. The font’s name comes from Jones’s famous frigate, lost during his victorious engagement with the British in the Battle of Flamborough Head in 1779. During this battle Jones is said to have exclaimed, when urged to surrender, “I have not yet begun to fight!” (In fact, his likely words were, “I may sink, but I’ll be damned if I strike!” – i.e., surrender.) A legible script, Bonhomme Richard has an elegance about it while also conjuring the colonial era of its source material. Pacific Script is a font inspired by an alphabet created by Howard Trafton in the 1930s. However, I felt it needed some changes to bring it to the cutting edge of 21st century font design. Though designed as a display font, it works very successfully in longer passages of text, however, it should not be used in font sizes less than about 15 point. Small x height in contrast to extravagant caps gives the font a very dramatic feel. Though it has cursive qualities, the characters in this font do not connect, making it slightly more legible and less like handwriting. The inclusion of 26 alternate upper case characters give the user the freedom to create a hand crafted design. Language support includes all European character sets.
