The Vtg Stencil fonts from astype are based on real world stencils from several countries. In the case of French stencils the challenge was special, because of the varieties of different widths and weights between the stencil sets – so I made France No. 1, No. 3 and No. 5. The most unique and eye-catching elements of typical French stencils are the figures 1, 2, 3, 7 and a specially 5. The figure 5 changes in style on smaller stencil sizes, its bobble getting replaced by something like a “breve”. The letters J and Q can differ in style too. Quiller is another catch from the hot metal days, another one that managed to slip through the fingers of both the photo-typers and digitizers of last 4 decades. JJ Sierke’s Privat design from 1966 is now resurrected and heavily extended to be used by computer users everywhere. Lunanic is a geometric novelty typeface family with a touch of graffiti. The letters are formed from a circle with a notch or nick taken out, a shape that reminds me of a partial lunar eclipse. Half of the family have the nick on the left and half on the right. The faces are monospaced and so tightly spaced that there is no space between most of the letters so the filled styles cannot be used alone without tweaking. There are several ways to tweak them to make them readable: adjacent letters can be colored differently, the characters spacing can be increased, or an outlined style can be layered on top of the filled letters. The family does not have a true lower case. Most of the characters in the lower-case slots are alternates for those on the upper-case keys and they can be mixed in whatever way the user finds best. The family has twelve members: two orientations with three weights each and each of these six has an outline style to go with it. I regard Sabio as an evolutionary face. By this I mean that it merges elements of script and Roman design into one elegant whole. The design was 'evolved' somewhere between these two classic approaches. Casino Hand is a handwriting font that comes with some exciting new OpenType features*. The font comes with an alternate glyph for every uppercase letter, lowercase letter, numbers and some punctuation. These alternates are extremely easy to use with OpenType doing all of the hard work for you! Plus, you get the cross platform compatibility that OpenType provides. When the Contextual Ligatures feature of Casino Hand is utilized in your graphics application, the font substitutes a duplicate letter with the alternate glyph for that letter. This automatically makes the font look less like a font and more like real handwriting! Casino Hand also allows you to switch to use the alternate glyphs as the default by using the Stylistic Alternates feature. You can even use the two OpenType features together! This means that you can have duplicate glyph substitution with either the standard letters, or the alternates. You can also use the Glyph window in the Adobe CS applications to selectively choose characters. You can simply go into the glyph window and replace a letter that you don't like with its alternate.
